Subject: OMG!!!!!
Would you believe Lionel Ritchie and Rob Zombie have joined up and and made a duet out of the 70's fave, Brick House.
And some rapper named Trina includes a nice little rap in the middle of the song..
WHAT HAS happened to MUSIC people??
Subject: Re: OMG!!!!!
This can't be happening!!! >:(
"Brickhouse" should be left alone.
(I actually believe it because it had happened a lot before.)
Why on earth would Lionel Richie sing a duet with a Zombie named Rob? I'm not familiar with Trina, but Trina also should stay away from "Brickhouse" and all the great songs from the past. (Whatever happened to originality? It's now very rare.)
And butcher "Brickhouse", a classic Commodores (where Lionel Richie was a part of...) song.
This must be some kind of bad joke.
What's next Simon LeBon remakes "Hungry Like The Wolf" with Christina Ackilerra & Ja Rule rapping? (Hopefully untrue)
Music now is very unoriginal & mostly are remakes (can you say "Lady Marmalade") or constantly containing samples. I only can name 6 OR 7 "original" or talented artists of the present that emerged into the music business since 2000.
:D Good thing that there's tons of great music from the past 50 some years to the mid 1990's that are still played in many radio stations.

However, I think saying there is actually 6-7 talented artists since 2000 is very generous.

Just like how "new metal" faded around last year. :D

Kenny, I think the main reason you see that so much is this is a board made up of (largely) nostalgic music fans.

Telling people how they felt, feel or remember about a decade is silly.

I agree on the attrocity done to the tune. In MNIK's defense, there are a few good tunes out there. They are some of the few that are not remakes.
Subject: Re: OMG!!!!!
I could care less who does what anymore. There's so many remakes and samples its just boring now. You get used to all the unoriginality because the music scene has been so bad since 1999. I think the saddest part of music nowadays is its not being taken seriousily and is always being made fun of. MTV, and Clear Channel are too blame for music's downfall.

The 1980's were a great time for music.
There were tons more creative/original acts from the 1980's compared to now.
Heck, even some of the teen pop acts from the mid/late '80's had more talent (George Michael, Debbie now Deborah Gibson) compared to current teen pop acts.
(With exception of NKOTB, Menudo, and Tiffany).

My parents, while great and wonderful people, were into Helen Reddy, Julio Iglesias and REO Speedwagon. I suppose you can make a case for REO Speedwagon, but that shouldn't be the best band in your record collection. My point is, that there was much better music being made when they were growing up and they managed to ignore it completely. And their taste in current music... well, let's not go there.

Error corrected: The horrid '60's band was called "The 1910 Friutgum Company", not "1914 Fruitgum Factory"
I believe that the next generation would view the late '90's/early 2000's as the worst generation of popular music because of the amount of unoriginality & lack of talent.

Subject: Re: OMG!!!!!
Hiphop, whether or not you or I like it, will be around for a long long time. The rap stars of today, much like Alice Cooper or Sabbath, will live through the gigantic wave of criticism and be respected twenty-five years from now. Most of the best music of today is being made by hiphop groups, Outkast, The Roots, Common, Eminem, Missy Elliot, etc.
Yes, I do have to concede that the late 90's/early 00's have not been the best time for music, but not really any worse than, say 1989. There aren't really any good movements but there are plenty of good bands.
Subject: Re: OMG!!!!!
Then (1989) & Now (2000's) (Inspired from "I Love The 80's")
1989: Debbie Gibson = did her own material & actually wore clothes
2000's: Bratney Spears & Christina Ackilerra = both lack talent, lack clothing that both would make "Samantha Fox" look like "Gidget".
1989: New Kids On The Block= annoying
2000's: N' Stink & Bad Smell Boys = annoying x's two
1989: MTV still played music videos. Not to mention Daisy Fuentes & Pauly Shore.
2000's: Since 1997, MTV started to lack videos. Carson Daly is the worst tv personality of all time! (that I know of)
Yes, 1989 had Milli Vanill, Richard Marx (no offense) & New Kids On The Block, but every era has It's share of bad artists.
I could name more great songs from 1989 than from today (the last 4 years).
It's just my opinion. 8)
I find a lot of today's hip hop very cliche' & constantly contian vulgarity & obsenity.
(Not trying to sound like Tipper Gore.)
Ironically, this came out from the same person who enjoys "South Park" & some movies. ::) ::) ::)
Subject: Re: OMG!!!!!
People brag on how great the 80's were. Ok the 80's were a good decade but stop bragging already. We had good bands in the 90's: STP, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Green Day, Alice In Chains, and Sublime. Even Hip-Hop was half good: Arrested Development, Cypress Hill, and Naughty By Nature. I'm so sick of people bragging about the 80's. It was a good decade of music and nothing more. A Great decade of music? No. A good decade of music? yes. You want to get into bad acts of the 80's: Stacey G, Tiffany, Debbie Gibson, and New Kids On The Block. Warrant, Poisin, and Winger. Look at the crappy hair metal. Good music of the 80's: LL Cool J, Duran Duran, Michael Jackson(Love him or hate him, Madonna, Depeche Mode, New Order, Def Leppard. U2. Like of the rap of the 90's at least 80's Pop/R&B was respectable: Bobby Brown, Taylor Dayne, Vanessa Williams(well late 80's/early 90's anyways), Jody Watley, and Bobby Brown. Music went downhill when MTV started to be the R&B and Rap Lite station. I don't know what happened to people taste in music in the late 90's. Instead of people getting the music they want MTV told them what music they should buy. I do agree on one thing the 80's people on these boards are saying the hip-hop they play now its about always getting money, hoes, or cars. How many songs can you have that are like that? Alll the video's are the exact same: girls dancing with nothing on with some rapper flaunting his loot around.

Those weren't teen pop people. Bobby Brown had a nice run from 88-92. I don't blame him for any bad 90's R&B. I think a couple years ago R&B and Rap came together too much. I mean in 1991 you still had good R&B like Jodeci. You had Public Enemy for rap. Now you have so many collaborations with R&B and rap artists that its out of control and it mixes the 2 genre's together too much.

Were you old enough to enjoy the 80's to their fullest from beginning to end?
Anyway, what we feel is called nostalgia. It is a very normal, very healthy way of feeling and being. There's absolutely nothing wrong with all of us being who we are and expressing ourselves in the way we wish.
You have your opinions. Now let us 80's lovers have ours without displays of indignation. :)
Subject: Re: OMG!!!!!
If it weren't for the 80's and our love of bragging about them, because to us they WERE superior, this site wouldn't exist. It's original basis was 80's. Hence the name, inthe80s.com
The 80's built it. Just as the 80's built my station. Again, if it weren't for the fans of the 80's, who feel the music of that decade was superior, I would not have the audience I have each week, people who stay up until WELL into the AM just to hear their songs. I would not be climbing the charts at Live365 as rapidly as I am.
While NO ONE is denying the 80's had bad music, we feel there was much less bad music in the 80s. It wasn't nearly so pre-packaged. Bands played instruments. bassists held a bass-line and helped carry the song, they didn't try to be another guitar. Lyrics were SUNG not growled or mumbled. Albums were made with longevity in mind, with bands and artists trying to fill them with hits. They actually recorded B-Sides for the singles, separately. They didn't make an album with 1 or two single hopefuls, and fill the rest of the album with B-Sides. Nowadays, you need a B-Side for that lone single on the album? Remix the single a couple times and put those on it!
We preferred the fashion of the 80's. Bright colors, fun looks. We didn't want to look like lumberjacks. I believe a vast majority of us feel that pants with the crotch hanging below the knees looks dumb. You aren't that well-hung, and your boxers are ugly. The colors of your clothes are bland. And half of the fashions today are what we wore or saw our older relatives wearing in the 70's. As far as we're concerned, there's a REASON those went out of style. We keep hoping you'll figure out why.
In short, we have a right to brag about the 80's. WE loved them, and many of us wish they had never ended. We lived through your 90's, and in comparison, we really didn't like them. Had you lived in our decade, I mean really lived in it, not just a little tyke, you may agree. I know some of the people from the 90's even prefer the 80's. It's our opinion, and we havea right to it, the same as you have a right to feel otherwise. The bands you mention as being good in the 90's? IMO, I wouldn't p*ss on them to put them out if they were on fire. The bands you mention as being crappy in the 80's? At least they played music, not angst. They were actual musicians, who chose to write about fun things like partying, sex, and good times. Not about how crappy things are. Maybe you don't like it because it doesn't have a messge you can get into. Maybe we like it for that very same reason.

Debbie (now Deborah) Gibson actually did her own material & put out fun songs, in my opinion. The same with The Jets & George Michael/Wham!.
Many '80's pop & R&B acts like: Samantha Fox, New Edition, Bobby Brown,Tiffany (Though I only like 1 song),Pebbles, Taylor Dayne, and Expose',to name a few, also had great fun pop songs.
And a lot of the hair bands are still fun to listen to like Poison, Whitesnake,Motley Crue, Warrant,Cinderella, Bon Jovi, Def Leppard (Though they don't consider themselves a "hairband"), etc.
What about Kiss from the '70's?
