Subject: Pearl Jam didn't learn from Dixie Chicks mistake..

Written By: 80sRocked on 04/04/03 at 12:56 a.m.

Seems like Pearl Jam didn't learn from the mistakes of their fellow musicians (Dixie Chicks) and had to try it for themselves.

I copied-and-pasted some of the highlights of the news story below:

------------------------------------------------------------

Concert-goers head to exits after anti-Bush display

By Mark Brown, Rocky Mountain News
April 3, 2003

Incensed fans walked out of Pearl Jam's concert Tuesday after lead singer Eddie Vedder impaled a mask of President Bush on a microphone stand, then slammed it to the stage.

Most of Vedder's antiwar remarks earlier in the Pepsi Center show were greeted with mixed cheers and scattered boos. But dozens of angry fans walked out during the encore because of the macabre display with the Bush mask, which he wore for the song Bushleaguer, a Bush- taunting song from the band's latest album, Riot Act.

"When he was sharing his political views in a fairly benign manner - supporting our troops, opposing policy - that's OK," said Keith Zimmerman, of Denver.

"When he takes what looks like the head of George Bush on a stick, then throws it to the stage and stomps on it, that's just unacceptable. I love Pearl Jam, but that was just way over the edge. We literally got up and left."

"I wasn't sure if it was really happening," said Kim Mueller. "We looked at each other and realized he really did have George Bush's head on a stick and was waving it in the air, then slam-med it to the ground and step-ped on it."

"It was like he decapitated someone in a primal ritual and stuck their head on a stick," Zimmerman said. "It kinda blows away the Dixie Chicks." ...

------------------------------------------------------------

Wow, such class. ::)

Well, I don't mind so much that he said anti-Bush stuff, but to impale his portrait on the mic-stand seems a little bit extreme, no?

How gauche.

But really, this is nowhere even close as big as deal as the Dixie Chicks.  A couple dozen people walking out of a concert of near 12,000 people is not that important; Pearl Jam is nowhere near the superstars that the Dixie Chicks are at the moment; and besides which, you expect this sort of thing from Eddie Vedder.  They didn't "learn from the mistakes of their fellow musicians" because it wasn't nearly as much of a mistake for them.

Hehe, that has no relevance to the main point of this article...oh well.

The story 80s Rocked posted was definately a bit more glorified than the one I read, from my understanding it was estimated 12 people walked out.  Also the point I read in this article was that it was the encore, after a show was to officially end but the band came out to perform a bit longer. Good time to leave to beat the rush.
For this song Eddie rips the mask off his face and sticks it to the top of the mike stand, he then addresses to that "Bush" that is now standing beside him, he did the same thing at the Seattle show I went to in December.
1st point to make is that I wasn't a pro boycott Dixie Chicks after the singers remarks, the  points I made are know your demographic your marketing to.
2nd point is that anyone that is going to a Pearl Jam show knows that Vedder and the band are a politically active and very liberal, they were big backers of Nader the last presedential election.  The song Bushleaguer is very anti Bush and should not have been a surprise to anyone.

During that show It sounded as if he was asking to support the troops but not the war.
This incident is no surprise to me as a big fan of Pearl Jams music but not their political leanings I know what to expect from them on disc and stage and have no reason to be shocked at any political message.

Yeah, Sinead, Vedder, and Fiona Apple are those kinda artists where you let them sing their stuff and they're awesome, and then you get the mic the hell away from them before they have a chance to say something.

They had every right to critisize George W. Bush.  But they should have known who their primary audience was.  Most people that listen to the Dixie Chicks are a bunch of dumb rednecks driving around in pickup trucks with rebel flags on them.  They also listen to Rush Limbaugh, watch NASCAR and the WWF.  A bunch of hicks that idolize John Wayne weren't going to take to bad mouthing a conservative President, especially one from Texas.  Ofcourse yahoos like that were going to overreact and boycott the Dixie Chicks.  Look at these redneck morons, driving their pickups and tractors over Dixie Chick CDs that they PAID for!! I think the Dixie Chicks should have known better in that regard, they should have remembered who their primary audience was, and that......was a huge mistake on their part.

I looked over that post and you're right, it was way out of line.  I'm sorry and I apologize for making such broad sweeping and insulting statements about a certain demographic.  I just feel that the DC have recieved too much flak for stating their opinions, and that the people driving tractors and pickups over CDs that they paid for are nuts.

I get into debates with that particular demographic all the time on political chats, and I find them very predictable with what they're going to say, and I suppose I've learned that I just don't like them very much.  I'm sorry guys, everyone is right, it was definately an out of line and insulting thing to post and wrong of me to make such sweeping judgments.

Subject: SNL made fun of Dixie Chick fans

Did anyone see that Saturday Night Live skit they did today about Dixie Chick fans?  It relates to the discussion that is going on here.  It was hilarious, they got these two guys to dress up as stereotypical hicks and claim they were Dixie Chick fans while and they sang a country song about how they are boycotting and protesting everything that they feel is anti-Bush, anti-War, and just plain anti-American.
They weren't just protesting the Dixie Chicks in their song, but everything they didn't agree with.  "I'm boycotting Coca-Puffs cereal, because I don't know why, they're un-American I guess...".  LOL, it was kinda mean spirited towards that public perceived idea of what a Dixie Chick fan must be like, but it SOOO HILARIOUS.  Just a funny skit that SNL did today I thought I would mention when I saw this topic.

So let's just consider Paul S.'s statement as a error of judgement on his part and move on. We are all under the same Constitution.

I was pee-ed off when Sinead O'Connor tore the Pope's picture on SNL and said, "Fight the real enemy!" And from then one I believed that Sinead was the real enemy. But I digress.

I have no idea how old you are, but I think what you said shows it.  Before you EVER attack the land I love and call home.....you better think again. Just what demographic are you talking about, here, pal? I'm just wondering if I fit into that demographic. I occasionally listen to the Dixie Chicks. I'm from the south. Even though I never post political views on here, I lean to the left, so that knocks me out of the "good ol' boy conservitive" stereotype. I watch NASCAR but don't get into WWF at all.  I don't listen to Rush Limbaugh. I don't idolize John Wayne but respected the HELL out of his morals and love of country. So lets see, thats 3 for, and 3 against fitting into your demographic, I imagine. I can only say that if it takes arguing my point of view with someone as obviously biased, predjudiced, and completely clueless to the feelings of others as you, to fit in that demographic, then I definetly don't fit, because I wouldn't waste my time. Was that what you "predicted" you were going to hear? And as far as whether you "like" me or not, well, I won't lose any sleep. And no, Hair, I don't accept an apology that's really no apology at all.

Look I don't want to pick a fight with anyone here, but I guess it's already started. I realize I made a serious mistake by putting my foot in mouth with those statements and I tried to get rid of them as fast as I could.  I really am sorry I hurt anyone's feelings.  I see this Dixie Chick topic on several message boards and chat rooms, and I had a knee jerk reaction to this topic.  It appears not many people are going to let me off the hook for those statements, so I think it's best if I just leave this topic be, since quite a few people are CLEARLY trying to goad and bait me into a fight which I won't be able to win since I already made some boneheaded opening statments.  Hairspray, that includes you too.   Sorry guys, I apologize for my remarks, but I refuse to take anyone's bait to be your entertainment.  So I'm going to just leave this topic and reiterate that I am deeply sorry if I hurt anyone, and I made a terrible mistake in making sweeping judgments.  We're all guilty of that from time to time.

Thanks for the laughs folks. :)
It just fit to well into the subject context to ignore.  Also, Rain Soaked News is a fee weekly that you can most commonly find in Tanning Shops and Retirement Centers.

Race?  Is there anyway you could maybe give us another article based on the recent events surrounding a certain thread over in PPP?   ::)

Don't push your luck, Paul S. I will only allow your disrespectful personal remark go because you're reacting like someone who's cornered. You get yourself deeper in it the more you post in this topic. Your apologies are poorly written and insincere. You still display prejudice. On top of that, you are bashing those who have a right to feel offended in the first place by your posts. You will be doing yourself a great favor by no longer replying to this thread. You're on strike 2. The third one and you're out.
End Quote

You never did respond to my private message calling you out on this very unfair and ridiculous post.  You know that your opinions as a moderator carry more weight then a typical poster, and you publicly discredited my apologies of being that of an insincere and cowardly person who feels cornered.  Then you say I'm personaly attacking you and bashing people?  Huh?  You know very well I didn't do any of that.  Then ofcourse you continue you to threaten me with banning for making apologies.

I don't care if this post gets me banned, I think you've shown yourself to be a wreckless and unfair moderator.  If speaking my mind out against you gets me banned, then so be it.  I don't care who you are.  I always speak my peace on what I think is right and wrong.

Now why don't you just lock this thread?

Ok babyboy......I am here now....in my full face!

And I am here to tell you that you are suffering from "Foot In Mouth Disease"  It is common for off the wall mouthy people that wander their way into our little nice calm world.

The symptoms are calling people names like "Redneck" and "Rebel Flag Fliers"  This of course scares people into thinking they might can catch this HORRIBLE disease....so they try to get rid of the infected one...ie: YOU!!!!!!

So do us all a favor.....save us from a plague caused from your "fever" and get the h#ll out of Dodge...and save Hair the trouble of banning you.  It is MUCH less painful that way!

And btw......she does NOT have to answer to you....so save your stupid pm's for Penthouse Forum

Paul S just can't stand that everything calmed down, so he is back to stir it up. Why else would he be here in the middle of the night challenging a person who is probably asleep, and posting a path of insults and self righteous garbage!  You are laughable dude! Everyone just ignore him or laugh at him. Maybe he will go away....... ;D
