Subject: Sears steps up to the plate supporting troops

Written By: cs on 04/03/03 at 07:20 a.m.

Someone sent this to me, thought I'd share.  This is outstanding!  cs

Assume you have all see the reports about how Sears is treating its reservist employees who are called up? By law, they are required to hold their jobs open and available, but nothing more.
Usually, people take a big pay cut and lose benefits
as a result of being called up...Sears is voluntarily paying the difference in salaries and maintaining all benefits, including
medical insurance and bonus programs, for all called up reservist employees for up to two years. I submit that Sears
is an exemplary corporate citizen and should be recognized for its contribution.
Suggest we all shop at Sears, and be sure to find a manager to tell them why we are there so the company gets the positive reinforcement it well deserves.  Pass it on.

So I decided to check it out before I sent it forward. I sent the following email to the Sears Customer Service Department:
I received this email and I would like to know if it is true. If it is, the internet may have just become one very good source of advertisement for your store. I know I would go out of my way to buy products from Sears instead of another store for a like item even if it was cheaper at the other store.

Here is their answer to my email......................
Dear Customer,
Thank you for contacting Sears. The information is factual. We appreciate your positive feedback. Sears regards service to our country as one of greatest sacrifices our young men and women can make. We are happy to do our part to lessen the burden they bear at this time.

Hmmm. I wonder, what would happen if we privatized the army ???

I don't think it'll be a difference, because anyone with half a brain will try to go for the lowest bidder anyway ;)

I think it's great, despite the unsavory comments made on a certain radio station here this morning.  ::)

They were just talking about these big corps. profiting off the war & such.  It was like a big joke, although I wasn't laughing at all.  >:(  Why is it that when a company tries to do a good deed, they are accused of explotation or trying to market themselves?  :-/

BTW:  Race, this has nothing to do with your comment above. ;)

We will find out when the war is over and we look at how the stock market does. War sometimes creates profits. Every time a bomb falls in a foreign land, the GDP goes up; every time a leader is overthrown, the GDP goes up; every time a forest or a city is burned to the ground, the GDP goes up. That's the bottom line, but this is a Capitalist economy, so I don't see the moral dilemma or the joke. It's business.

I thought that might have been the case, my post above was just to beat them to their weak sucker punch.

Good comment TB, and I just wish to add that the stock market effects so many of us, lots more people are involved in it today than 20 or 10 years ago.  The last 3 companies I worked for all had 401-k programs going and even kicked matching funds to them too, incomes ranged from $7.15 hr to 6 figures and all were elligible to participate.  Stronger stock market means poor working Race and the Mrs. retire a bit more comfortably.

I e-mailed Sears about the original post.  Here's what they e-mailed back to me today.  cs

Dear Customer,

Thank you for taking the time to let us know of your support for our actions regarding our associates who have been called into active duty.  We thought our actions were simply the right thing to do, so we have been pleasantly surprised by the tremendous surge of support from you and so many other
Americans.

Yes, Sears has extended its program of military pay differential to 24 months.  This includes allowing Sears reservists who are full-time employees to continue participating in the company's life insurance, medical and dental programs, if they choose.  The company will also hold a comparable position for these individuals for up to five years.

This is not an unusual policy change for Sears.  We have extended the pay differential many times in the past, including for Operation Desert Storm and, more recently, for reservists called to serve in Croatia.

Sears has a heritage of commitment to families and home.  This is a difficult time for military families, and we are proud to be able to take these actions to demonstrate support for our many co-workers who are serving our Nation.

Sincerely,
The Employees of Sears, Roebuck and Co.
