Subject: Eminem: The debate!

Written By: John_Harvey on 04/02/03 at 06:58 p.m.

I really think Eminem's lyrics are not that shocking. Go into any genre of music and I can almost guarantee you that there is somebody whose lyrics are cruder than Em's. Other rappers, black rappers, catch little or no flak for their stories of gang life and gang violence.

I really want to know: Why is Eminem so different? I think I know. He's white. Plain and simple. If he were black, no one would care but because he's white we are all shocked and horrified. Eminem sang about killing his wife. C-Murder wrote about shooting a "ho" and "f***ing her corpse".

I might be wrong, so why do you think Eminem gets trashed so much?

Yeah, X, but compare those four or five songs with the entirety of songs by black artists which are just (or close to) as violent or misogynist as those songs.

As for Eminem, I think he gets so much flak because while there may be other artists who are as violent/homophobic/misogynist/sacreligous/consumed-by-hatred-of-everybody because he is the biggest superstar in the world right now, while, say, J-Live doesn't quite have the fanbase to support a large movement against him.  Eminem wouldn't be nearly as hated if he wasn't so popular.  And he wouldn't be nearly as popular if he wasn't so white.

White rappers are always famous.

The Beastie Boys, Vannilla Ice, House of Pain, Eminem....they are always more famous and in the mainstream then Black rappers.

Yeah, there are rappers/rockers with way more terrifying lyrics than Eminem:

Mad Insanity
Mars (from Mad Insanity)
Necro
Brother Lynch Hung
Esham
GG Allin

you gotting be joking?  the beasties?  LOL  Vanilla Ice?  LMAO.  House of Pain?  ok they had one good song.  the Beasties were at the time trying to bring the rock/rap mix into the generation along with Run DMC.  they were basically on the same record label.  the beasties still to this day have some good music and is still played every one in a while.  as for vanilla ice, he was a one hit wonder with Ice Ice Baby.  yeah people laugh at that today.  and house of pain, well they're has beens.  as for eminem he's been on the hip hop scene since like 1996.  the man got straight up skills.  and what about Bubba Sparxxx?  does anybody remember the song "Ugly"?  yeah thats a tight song and the album is ok, but have you heard from him lately?  nope!  my point is is not a black and white thing, it's whether you have the skill or not.

Right, but when Vanilla Ice hit the scene, there was also controversy about him such as the fact that he lied about his upbringing, beat his girlfriend, etc., just not too the extreme of Eminem.

I think Eminem and Busta Rhymes should have a rapping showdown to see who can rap the fastest and longest without taking a breath...then whoever lives through that one can challenge the Mini Micro Machine Commercial guy...

That's because no one knew him back during that time, he was just getting started.  The man had skills before he was with dre and snoop.  I take it you never heard his album titled "Infinite".  It was released back in '96 and it's really good lyrically.  He had ro switch his style because people said he sounded like Nas.  And as for Dre signing him,  it wasn't because he was white.  He heard Em and had to meet up with him.  When Dre seen he was white, he was quite shocked. Face it, as time progressed he got better.  I heard it in his music.

A brainiac in fact son, you mainly lack attraction
You look insanely wack when just a fraction of my tracks run
My rhyming skills got you climbing hills
I travel through your mind into your spine like siren drills
I'm sliming grills of roaches, with spray that disinfects
And twisting necks of rappers 'til their spinal column disconnects
Put this in decks and check the monologue, turn your system up
Twist 'em up, and indulge in the marijuana smog
This is the season for noise pollution contamination
Examination of more cartoons than animation
My lamination of narration

Apparantly alot of people cared about that fact that Vanilla Ice lied about "growing up in the hood" in his interviews & in some of his songs, when in fact he grew up in an upper class neighborhood.  He said the reason he lied, was because he thought that was the only way the rap industry would take him seriously.  Talk about stereotyping! :-/

I also feel that the only reason Eminem sings about the cr@p he does, is for the shock value of it.  I mean, what a way to get in the spotlight....rap about beating your wife, an alcoholic mother, etc.  of course that's going to cause controversy, why do you think he did it?  Add the fact that he is a white boy, that's even MORE controversial.  Walk around with an angry face all the time like your pissed off at the world and start fights with Moby (of all people) of course people are going to buy into it eventually.

I will say that I haven't seen 8 Mile yet, and I heard that he was a great actor in that.  hmmmm...must be hard to "act" out similar events in your life.   ::)

And as far as the quote about The Beastie Boys, you responded to Ian's post about The Beastie's being more mainstream, your reponse was, "you gotting be joking?  the beasties?".  OK, so I misunderstood you saying that they had "one hit", although are you trying to say that they are NOT mainstream?  I don't know about where you live, but I hear them all the time here.  "License to Ill" is one of the biggest selling rap records of all time.  "Paul's Boutique" & "Ill Communication" both went platinum.  That seems a little "mainstream" to me.  Not only that, MTV was saturated with their videos in the 90's.  So please let me know what you meant by that statement.  I seem to be a bit confused.  :P

You say "shock value" like it's a bad thing.  He may rap for the shock value.  I don't care.  I find it compelling, I think he's hilarious, I think he has skills out the wazoo (Dre or Snoop be damned, the boy got rhymes and all his peers will tell you so).  And it's not like he has no reason to be that angry, at least at the start of his career, so if he wants to exploit his sh*tty upbringing, let him.  Lots of artists, from Jay-Z to Ozzy Osbourne to Merle Haggard have done it.

By the way, Sag, those lyrics... ugh.  I think that shows pretty well why no one was listening to Eminem in 1996.

wazoo, wazzoo n. anus. Used as in being "up to wazoo" in something, i.e. metaphorically deeply involved as in "Up to the wazoo in the drug scene", or literally, as in "The basement had cockroaches up the wazoo." or "The pipe was leaking out the wazoo." The contributor heard this term in the 1980's in Brooklyn, when I worked for a real estate developer. He thinks it may be contractor slang, but has been around and in general use for a long time. Ya know what, I'm through.  Apparently you don't understand my sarcasism.  Let's just face it, Eminem has skills.  Same goes for my man Kid Rock.  They both can entertain a crowd and some major skills.

Hehehe.

Well, I like Ben Folds, but I just can't get into Eminem. I like the majority of your music choices, except for Eminem and some of the rap stuff. I actually pulled out his latest album out (hehe, my friend bought those for me, okay?!) to hear it again yesterday and I still don't hear what's going on, but, then, people say the same thing about Throbbing Gristle and NON, so maybe it's a matter of tuning my hearing to that mode of sound.

Eminem himself and his lyrics I don't find offensive or shocking at all (and he is one good-looking "bad-boy," so I can see how females can buy into his music even if it's misogynistic and homophobic), so I'm only going by how he sounds. Lyricwise, the dude can rhyme up a scheme like nobody else can. That's his skill right there. That's why he's Eminem and we're discussing him right now. Well, that and the fact that other people find his lyrics offensive and shocking...

I don't know, but I like the old stuff so much better. Skills or not, I still crank out Tone-Loc, Grandmaster Flash, Digital Underground, and it sounds so much catchier. The Stereo MCs weren't exactly Rap, but, man, it makes me wish they were.

He's said many things on that, but all evasive answers. He is very private on that account. The only girlfriend that I've ever heard he's had was the lead singer of Luddus (sp?) back in the early 80s. I think he's gay and may be even a reason why The Smiths broke up in the first place. Their brief story just smacks of Culture Club. I mean, come on, what does the song "I Won't Share You" really mean and who is it directed towards? I don't know, but some can claim artistic freedom all they want - sometimes artists use personal life references as inspiration for their work...

Controversy sells.  Eminem thrives on controversy.  It's all about ticking off mainstream America so you can become famous and sell lots of albums.

I don't know... I think people should realise Eminem is trying to make us angry, which isn't really a bad thing, I mean without him we'd be wasting our time on dissing black rappers that are just rapping and that AREN'T trying to make us angry. But I'm talking in circles. I sort of like Eminem. Whoever is seriously offended by him has been living a sheltered life.

I like Eminem. He takes it too far sometimes and it's not cool, but I think he's very clever. As far as the contraversy goes, I agree with Eminem's statement on himself: "You think I'm the first rapper to smack a b!tch and say f@gg*t?"

I dunno, I dislike a lot of Dr. Dre's latter-day production stuff, and especially the stuff he's done for Eminem.  It's monotonous.  Eminem does better when he produces himself, in my opinion.
