I heard about this.  What is this world coming to?  It reminds me of the companies just after 9/11 that wouldn't let employees put a flag on their desk.

Well, he seems to think that the ribbons are being used as a political statement. He says he wants public property to remain public property and not become a podium for political views.

I don't think that the ribbons are really political. They are more pro-troops than pro-war. I think the ban is unreasonable and silly. The mayor has merely made himself into a lightning rod for criticism. As an advocate of free speech, it is not entirely undeserved.

Wait a minute...did the council go along with this?

I'd read it, but I'm afraid I'd put my fist through the monitor ::)

my biggest gripe with this is the simple fact that even if you totally hate George Bush, or totally hate all that is government, or totally hate the idea of war, thats no excuse for not showing you support for the soldiers who are willing to die for you.

These men and women need every last ounce of support, after all, they need to know they aren't over there alone.

And when I see someone who refuses to show them support, simply because of his/her personal opposition to Bush or the war, I nearly explode with anger! >:(

Yeah, the way I read it, the council voted unanimously!
I don't know how many people make up this council but it seems a little unfair to blame the mayor alone!

I can't comment really because I'm not sure exactly what these yellow ribbons represent in the states.
The UK too has incidents of 'PC gone mad', the Police were once prevented from wearing red poppies to mark remembrance day because this clashed with the white poppies being worn by the protestors.

In the states the yellow ribbons simply mean support for the troops.  Nothing else.

I have mixed emotions on this.  On the one hand, I think we all should show support for the troops.  I have red, white and blue ribbons flying from my front porch, a US flag in my window (over a peace sign) etc.  but it is my property.  In my town, we don't allow relgious symbols on public property either.  How would you respond if some one tried to put up a confederate flag, or a swastika?  the ribbons are certainly not offensive though, so again, mixed feelings.  But this does seem a bit over  the edge in terms of common sense.
Oh my God, I'm almost agreeing with 80'srocked ;)

A yellow ribbon is not about religion, race, creed, sex. It is inspired by a Tony Orlando and Dawn song, and is only a symbol of hope that our troops will come back safe. The mayor is an idiot and I am glad I don't live there.

I know.  That's why I said it was "over the edge in terms of common sense" ;D

Would it be rude to state that Tony Orlando, with or without Dawn, is pretty cheezy musically?

"Whew" Thanks Shaz.  I wasn't sure how that would be taken but I felt it needed to be said. ;)
