Subject: Oprah is a Billionaire
I just read that Oprah has made the Forbes list as a Billionaire. That's wonderful that a self made black woman has reached that level, it was just two years ago that a self-made black man made the list.

Go Oprah!
Subject: Re: Oprah is a Billionaire
I wouldn't mind being in her shoes---brains and money. Wow!!!
Subject: Re: Oprah is a Billionaire
How in the world did she make so much money? Is she on the stock market like Martha Stewart? I never knew she had so much dough, she's a good person who does a lot for the less fortunate.

I don't think it's that big of a deal mainly because it doesn't affect me any. She worked in the entertainment medium and is reaping the benefits. The entertainment industry pays well if you do it right. She did it right. I give her credit for being the first Afro-American Donahue and taking it to many more levels, in keeping with the changing times and added controversies.
Charity:
She could pick a homeless/impoverished person, give them a million dollars and it wouldn't make a dent into her finances AND it's tax deductible.
Or she could pick two of them and give them 50,000.
I would if I were a billionare.
It's down-right sinful the amount of money some people make, with so many, so poor.

Isn't that the American way? People are willing to fork over billions to the entertainment industry, but don't want to pay higher taxes for health care and social programs.
When I say "American", I mean North America as a whole.

Many people have many definitions/meanings/lists of things they place under the label "The American Way".
So... If that's what it is for you then who am I to say any different. Right? ;)

I wouldn't say that thats what my definition would be. But my point was that we are the ones who make people like Oprah rich in the first place. If everyone was given $20 and had the choice of giving it to Unicef or going to see a movie, what do you think most people would choose to do?
By the way who was the first black male millionaire?

I agree 100%. Case and point: Pro Athletes. But thats for another thread.
Anyway, I guess I don't have a huge problem with people being bazillionaires, as long as they remember where they came from(pardon the cliche). And by that I mean give some back in donations, charity, etc.
Take Bill Gates for example. Last I heard he was worth over 30 Billion. However, according to a 20/20 report about him done in 2000, his annual charity/donations run well into the millions of $$$ range for schools, youth programs, etc. So at least he is giving some back.
Another example is that guy from Virginia that won the Powerball drawing last December. He won millions of $$$, and one of his first priorties with his winnings was to give some back to his church and community. 8)

I don't like generalizations.
I'll tell you this -
I wouldn't give to Unicef because the allotment of funds in such organizations is questionable.
I'd rather walk into a shelter, meet a family and take them out to dinner. If I had more money, I'd buy them a new life.
Hopefully, this somehow ties-in with the original subject matter. :-/
Perhaps it will take another opinion on Oprah's wealth to steer this back into course.

Well, she did earn the money, right? And you can argue that she worked hard for the money. So it's hers to do with as she pleases. Be thankful that she actually has enough of a heart to give some of it back, however insignificant it may seem to you.

FYI
Bill Gates is still the richest and is currently donating a billion a year to charity.
As far as Oprah goes I was surprised that she was worth a billion cause I don't follow day time tv stuff or her program. I do no that she is influential and tried to use it in positive ways. I think the great thing about her wealth was that it was accomplished by a black women from a humble background.
