Subject: My Cat's Back In ICU

Written By: Indy Gent on 02/15/03 at 09:03 p.m.

If you don't know by now, my cat has had health problems with his bowel and kidney infection. I had to take him to the 24-hour Veterinary Clinic again tonight because he had defecated on my computer chair (which I cleaned) and my blanket, then he started walking his hind legs in the straddling position that tells me he is constipated or his rectum is sore. I am expecting a call from the veterinarian after she is finished with surgery on another pet and is able to do some tests. It was very diificult to leave him there with the inclimate weather and inconvenient distance, since neither my sister or I trust the 24 hr. Clinic that's closer than the one I am taking him.

Hi Indy:

I'm very sorry to hear about your cat.  I know how emotionally taxing these kinds of things can be.

About two years ago my dog started limping on her right front paw.  At first I thought it was because she got it jammed in the door at Sun Microsystems, when I used to bring her to work.  But it progressively got worse.  We brought her to an orthopedic specialist.  After Xrays and extensive tests, we couldn't find anything, but during exploratory surgery, we noticed the biceps tendon was enflamed.  So we did a "tendon transplant"  This is a misnomer as it's not another dog's tendon.  It's a relocation of the tendon from being attached to the shoulder, directly to the humerus.  After weeks of therapy, there was no change.

We brought her back for several follow up visits, and I thought it was just becaus of her personality.  Gidgie (that's her name) is something of a "primadonna princess" who doesn't like to get her paws wet when it rains.  She thinks she's a person :)

A couple of months ago, we decided to bring her to a professional aquatherapist who noticed a lump under her armpit.  The biopsy showed a low grade spindle cell schwanoma (a nerve sheath tumor that's outside the spinal chord).  It's slow growing, so it won't respond to chemo and it's response to radiation is not known.

On the 24th she is scheduled for an 8 to 10 hour surgery.  First the paw and the arm will be removed (no chance of saving it).  Then the oncolgists will remove the mass.  Then a team of neurologists will perform microsurgery to remove the cells surrounding the nerve which is .05 mm away from the spinal chord.  Follow up will be radiation therapy.

She's really a good dog.  It's not just me who says so.  Everyone who meets her says she's a great dog.  And consider that I could bring her with me to Sun Microsystems every day.  Even people that don't like dogs loved our Gidgie.

Keep her in your thoughts.

Update on Clarence (My Cat): The veternarian just called me to confirmed that she removed two "juicy" manure balls (apologies to those eating), but that's not the end. She did feel some polyps that might, with his age, could be cancerous. She will be doing more tests to determine what my options are. She did suggest getting a biopsy done and sending the parts to Purdue University's Veterinery studies clinic. I will be getting off line at least briefly to call her up for more info.

I am so sorry to hear about your cat. I understand what you are going through and I hope he will be ok. My cat is 17 and has a series of health problems. She had developed a thyroid condition about a year ago. Then she started having kidney problems. I have to take her to the vet every week for fluids. It seems like every week, she loses more weight. This week, she was down to 4.8 lbs. This was a cat that used to weigh 15 lbs. She is now on I don't know how much medication-including Pepid AC, not to mention special food. But, with everything wrong with her, there is absolutely nothing wrong with her appitite. It is just keeping the food in her-it likes to come out both ways (if you know what I mean). Besides the fact that she is sooooo thin (you can see and feel every bone she has), she is still very spry which is unbelievable. I am just afraid that she isn't going to be with us too much longer. The things we do for our pets!

Thank you everybody for the prayers and good words for Clarence. He is doing fine right now. I took him back home earlier (after dozing off until 3:00 ::)) and the doctor prescribed Laxatone (which he hates vehemently). She also took some more blood work to be sent to Purdue's lab for a prognosis. My sister and I have decided if it's a worst case senario, that is cancerous polyps, we will have to ride out the storm and hopefully Clarence with live much longer but die in peace. Since he has had the same problems for three years, we would have to assume if there is cancer, it has already spread beyond any treatment. But please continue to pray for a good prognosis and good health for my cat.  8)

That is good news. My mother's cat has cancer. She has had several lumps removed and decided this time that she wasn't going to put her cat throught that again. Right now, it is only a matter of time. My cat, too, I am afraid is on borrowed time.
