Subject: Internet Suicide

Written By: Race_Bannon on 02/11/03 at 01:03 p.m.

I thought this was an odd one.  Anyone here see or hear of this before?  This is the only board I've ever hung out at and it's a fun place, not likely to run across this here.
What shocked me was the suicide level in Japan.

3 Japanese Die in Apparent Web Suicide

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

TOKYO -- Three Japanese were found dead in an apartment Tuesday after apparently plotting suicide together on the Internet, police said.

The unidentified 26-year-old man and two women are believed to have died of carbon monoxide poisoning at the apartment, where the door was sealed with tape and locked from the inside. Police found several portable cooking stoves in the apartment.

A 17-year-old student went to the apartment on the outskirts of Tokyo after reading an Internet posting by the man detailing his suicide plan, then reported the deaths, police said.

This is not the first time the Internet has been linked to suicides in Japan. In January 2000, a 32-year-old woman was arrested for helping a woman try to commit suicide after meeting her online. In 1998, a woman killed herself by swallowing cyanide capsules she ordered over the Internet.

Japan has one of the world's highest suicide rates, regularly exceeding 30,000 a year. The country has about 125 million people.

The stagnant economy has been blamed for an increasing number of suicides as many struggle with job losses, bankruptcies or mounting debts

Really pitiful. But some ancient Japanese customs still embrace the method of hari-kiri as a quick escape for dishonor. That's what's wrong with the world today, not religion. If only we thanked God for the life we had instead of wasting it to save our pride, we wouldn't be having the wars we have now. (Sorry to those would find this bothersome. :-/)

The Internet IS suicide.

And if you don't believe me, go spend a few minutes here and tell me if you don't feel your life being sucked away.

That game is maddening!  >:(  :P

Gotta go..... I'm a glutton for punishment.  ;D

Edited to add something on topic: I will never understand suicide, no matter where or how it takes place. Though I find it extremely ridiculous when I read of it done while on the net and in groups, to boot. ::) I apologize for my lack of sympathy.

That is sad, and also the reason I appreciate this board for it's clear standards and consistent administrators.  Chucky and Hairspray do a great job.

Hara-kiri (belly-splitting) is not exactly a quick escape: the idea is, I believe, to sit staring at ones own innards for a not inconsiderable time (one chap managed eighteen hours).  It's intended as atonement rather than escape.  Seppuku (suicide) has always been a part of Japanese culture: hell, it's such a crowded island, why not let them?

I agree wholeheartedly on the bit about being thankful for the life we have, but I can't think of any link between suicide pacts (whether conceived over the net or otherwise) and wars.
