Subject: Remember how cool music was before 1993?

Written By: Sean Gib on 01/31/03 at 03:30 p.m.

IMO, It has now been officially 10 years that we have had mostly cr*p music.  In 1993 the music and pop culture of the world changed (actually it changed in 1991, but to me it didn't go completely down the toilet until '93) for the WORSE.

Remember how cool it was pre-1993?  Everytime you turned on the radio, the music was made specifically for you, and it wasn't some stupid alternative garbage.  In 1993 I was only 20/21 years old.  Why was it that someone as young as me hated the pop culture of the time?  I think it proves that most of the 90s did suck.

Who elses misses the way it was before 1993?

Actually it started to go bad around 1995, the beginning of the end was when Kurt Cobain died in 1994. We had a few in between years but in 1997 things became teeny bopper again and all music just went down the toilet. It was just cookie cutter rap & pop, absolute drech.

it was cool up to 1994, then you had the slow change into the crap era that started in 1997. The good news is that we're almost completely out of it, it's just that nobody knows what's next.

for me the 80's sucked, they were just a boring, tacky, un imaginative era. The early 90's were REAL, they were lively, they were fun. The whole culture of things was exciting, so much was going on.

Hello again.

Maybe the reason you think the 90s "suck", like you say, is because perhaps you didn't explore other genres at the time. Like I said before and I'll say it again ;D The 90s wasn't all alternative. What made the decade so fun was "Variety". If we were sick of alternative, we would listen to Pop. If we were sick of pop, we would listen to Dance or Techno. And so on. Now a days, there isn't even any dance or techno anymore, lol!

The point is, the 90s was all about variety and fun, not vanity and competitoin like the 00s. ;)

I agree with the original poster.  I always considered 1993 the end of an age.

I concur.   I don't think Cobain's death had nearly the affect on the genre that his fans would like to think.  If you'll really look at the stats, contemporary music changes at approximate 4-year intervals.

OK you guys, I notice that in this particular thread it is the opinion of most that since '93 the music that has been produced for mass consumption has been crap.
I don't know what kind of music in particular that you folks like to listen to, but for me the last ten years have been great.
I'm basically a rocker as I've stated in other threads. I think that as far as good rock and roll is concerned the last ten years or so have produced some excellent stuff.
Pearl Jam: more than ten years ago, but in the ball park.
Stone Temple Pilots: OK, a Pearl Jam clone, but in the early '90's who wasn't?
Creed
Godsmack
Alice In Chains
Disturbed
Linkin Park
Saliva
Hoobastank
Mad At Gravity
Seether
Korn
Stabbing Westward
Soundgarden
U.P.O.
Tool
A Perfect Circle
Smashing Pumpkins
Candlebox
Deftones
Filter
Fuel
Incubus
Nickelback
P.O.D.
Puddle Of Mudd
Shudder To Think
Silverchair
Sponge
Staind
Some of these bands may have been around for more than ten years, but I didn't hear of them until ten years or less ago.
This is just a small sample of the bands that have come out in the last ten years.
So, if you're a rocker like me. The last ten years have been a smash hit! ;D

I think 1993 is cited a lot, not just in this thread but other places as well because by '93 there was nothing left of the 1980's.

There was still a small residue of the Late 80's around up till 1992, but in 1993 that was all gone and the pop culture grew darker and more gloomy with the grunge and gangsta rap.  You also had a form of music that was generally kept out of the mainstream (Alternative) suddenly being played on the radio stations.

Eli, please allow me to clarify...  A few of the bands that you listed formed even before 1990; I just think they produced their better stuff before the mid-to-latter 90s. (e.g. Alice In Chains, Sponge, Soundgarden, STP, etc.)  I have to say that the pinnacle of the decade was 91-93, and then came a subtle transition into rap-rock {some of which I like}.  It's hard to live up to your own standards if you're already 'established', much less try to top such a thriving music scene in the earlier part of the decade I just remember getting so much good music every week and not having, to my chagrin, enough spaces on the playlist to put them.  Seriously.  There's not one band on your list that I wouldn't listen to right now and I have many of those artists on CD.  I honestly don't get mired in one genre or decade, I think bands like Hoobastank and Default, P.O. Mudd, etc. are a godsend on any rock playlist.  I can't help but prefer, though, the sound of the earlier 90s.  Those are just my ears, though.   8)  However, I have to take exception to the "Pearl Jam Clone" shot at STP.  Not only were they far away from Seattle-- in San Diego, but their texture, chord progressions and tempo patterns are entirely different of Pearl Jam.  The same could not be said of Creed.   ::)

I thougjt music was cool after 1993. December 1998-november 2000 is the worst period in music history I feel. 2001-2002 are just cycle changes in music. I hated 1998-2000 because of the teen-pop thing because the music wasn't even about the music. Today I listened to a little Audioslave and Seether and felt like I came out of the musical duldroms out of 1999 finally. Next: that rap music needs to go. I'm sorry but I cannot take the lyrics of going to a club. With the Exception of Nas and Twab Kweli I cannot stand hip-hop anymore. In 1992-1993 Hip Hop was cool like Naughty By Nature, PM Dawn, Arrested Development, 2Pac, Jazzy Jeff and Fresh Prince(pre-Will Smith Men In Black.) Hip-Hop used to be fun to listen to now its all about going to the club with basically naked girls all the time in the video's.

I think every year has its good music. In the last fews years, there has been considerably less good music IMO, but it doesn't mean that it's non-existant.

I think things started to go downhill after the mid 90s. Probably 97. Through 93-97 there were some fantastic bands around, especially on the indie and brit pop scene. You've got Oaisis, Blur et al. Ok the 90s saw teh rise of bubble gum popbut that's not al that was around.

The best decade for music was the 80s in my opinion. I'll stand by that, whatever the criticism. It was an innovative and imaginative era, for many genres. From indie to hip hop, dance or rock, all was apparent and grew in the 80s.

Oh, Disciples of Christ.  Good music has always been present in every decade, if you know where to look at it.  If you came of age in 1992, you should not be living in the past a mere ten years later.

I never thought of the 80's as a great music era, but hey grunge got its start in the 80's. Nirvana was formed in the 80's, so maybe there's something to it.

Nirvana just barely formed in the late 80s.  Like 1989 barely.  I grew up in the 80s and 90s, and I'm glad we got the 90s to go as cool alternative (pun intended) to the 80s.

I think it would suck if I were still wearing neon, spandex and jean jackets up till 1999.

Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic were playing together as early as 1986 under various names with other guys coming in and out of the band. I think it was 88 when they settled on the name Nirvana.
