Human-Pet Massage Areas May Be Banned
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
EASTHAMPTON, Mass. -- The idea of people and pets getting professional massages in the same place rubs city officials the wrong way, so they're trying to tighten some health regulations.
The Board of Health is considering a proposal to differentiate between animal and human clients of massage therapists.
"We don't want (massage therapists) massaging animals at the same facility where humans are massaged," Health Agent Dennis Lacourse told the Daily Hampshire Gazette. "Do physicians let you bring your dog into the examining room? No."
Lacourse said human clients in massage facilities used by animals could potentially be exposed to parasites and disease, and animal hair can cause allergic reactions.
"Pets have fleas," Lacourse said. "Fleas carry the plague."
The Board of Health will hold a public hearing Feb. 3 on a proposal that would require therapists providing massage or muscular therapy to animals to set up a facility specifically for them.
Massage therapists say their practice can be every bit as soothing and relaxing to pets as it is to their owners.
"It's been gaining popularity in the last 10 years," said Lola J. Michelin, founder of the Northwest School of Animal Massage in Redmond, Wash. "The market is definitely growing and expanding."
I honestly had not a clue.

That's "massages" :D
And what's wrong with a few fleas and ticks here and there anyway? :)

I read a feature article on dog shows a while back and learned that a lot of the people showing their dogs do the massage thing before they show.
Does anyone else but me think some people have more disposable income than is good for them?

I was surprised that this was even an AP story. If my dog needs a massage I'll let him roll around in the dirt. Wierdos.

My massage therapist was here today. I forgot to ask him to give a massage to my cats. I hate when I do that! ;)

If that's the case (and it is) no one should even have a pet, never mind have a massage with one. BUt the plague is spread by a particular kind of flea, that lives on particular kinds of animal, mostly rodents.

Being a massage therapist myself I can see where the legislature is coming from. Yes, animals may have parasites that could be harmful to humans. Also, keep in mind that many people have serious allergies to animals as well. IMO its good to have separate facilities.
Since I also receive many massages myself, Im not down with the idea of animals climbing all over the same table Im laying down on.

You can afford a massage therapist that makes house calls? I wish I had that kind of disposable income.

He is actually cheaper then some places where you have to go to. He only charges me $35 an hour. At that price, I can't afford NOT to have him come to the house. :)

Race, my correct title is Massage Therapist not a massager. The answer to your question is that you must use lots of lubricant or use compression techniques rather than gliding techniques. Otherwise it sure doesnt make for a pleasant experience for that guy. OWWWWWW
