Subject: MLK Day a school holiday?  Yes or no?

Written By: 80sRocked on 01/20/03 at 01:43 p.m.

There is a big debate now on whether or not Martin Luther King Day should be a day off of school for kids.  So far, I've heard many more people who think MLK Day should not be a day off shool, so what you think?

Even MLK's wife and family members are on record as saying kids should be in school on MLK Day.  She said MLK's dream of success through hard work and determination is being negated when kids get the day off.  I think she hit the nail right on the head.

Keep in mind, some smaller schools don't get the day off, but most larger schools do.

Now it's your turn...

Well, back in MLK's day, the race relations were a lot worse than they are now.  It was in great part due to his efforts (and I guess to a lesser extent, Malcolm X) that the civil rights movement went forward and blacks and minorities are much better off today.  So yes, he should be recognized.  But as for whether it's a day off...let's think about Veterans Day.  Some schools also don't take Vet Day off.  And if not for the Veterans who fought in the wars, South Korea would be overrun with communists and I would be speaking Japanese.  So I think they should be recognized too.

It should be uniform throughout the nation, whether or not a day is recognized as a holiday and thus one gets it off.

No.

My reasoning is included in 80sRocked's post above:

So yes, he should be recognized.  End Quote

there's no question that it should remain a holiday, just whether or not it should be a day off for schools.  I agree with your point regarding Veterans Day.

I agree with Hairspray, but I think it should be a national thing, as per what I said ^...by "holiday" I meant "school holiday".

I agree with the King family.  I would much rather my kids were in school learning about him than taking the day off school.

What I don't understand, though, is why are banks closed on MLK day?

How about the people who feel that only African Americans should get the day off?

Like Rice said, it needs to be recognized nationwide as a day off or not.  I realize it is a "national holiday" but if the kids were out of school for ALL "national holidays" they would be off  way too much.  There needs to be some uniformity...In Illinois, we celebrate Casimir Pulaski, for which most schools take the day off.  I have lived here all my life and have no idea who he is.  Should my kids be off school to celebrate someone they have never heard of other than knowing he is someone they get the day off for?  No.

absolutely wrong.

At a job I had when I was in high school, it was just assumed that all the black folks were allowed to take MLK Day off, and all the white folks were not allowed to.  And thats what always happened when MLK Day rolled around.  I know a lot of workplaces are still like this today, and some schools too that don't already take the day off.

It is wrong.

Beleive it or not, this also, in many cases, applies to MLK Day also.  Many kids know the name, but don't really know who he was and what he did.  All they know is that they get to sleep late and stay home on his birthday.

I think it should be a school day focused on the life of Dr. King. Maybe show some videos about him, have some group discussions about his teachings.

I don't think that it's a holiday that is necessary for a day off, and schools would be paying respect to MLK if they did teach the kids more about him and his methods of civil disobediance and initiating change through peace.
