Subject: Linux?
Does anyone here use Linux? How many use Windows? I was reading an artice which says Wall Mart is now selling compuers with Linux pre-installed, and that other companies are also making the Switch. I was wondering how many of you use Linux, use Windows, or use Windows but are interested in trying Linux?
Subject: Re: Linux?
Oh, I use Windows, but a friend installed Red Hat Linux on an old PC which I was not using. The KDE looks alot like windows, I am just not used to "mounting" cd-roms or hard drives. I still laugh when I am asked if I can see HDA1 and I say "I mounted the hard drive". HAHAHA!!!! ;D ;D ;D

I have a linux fileserver in the loft and it runs fine, it's been running for over 12 months without a reboot (try that with windows!)
The main problem with linux is support, not all hardware comes with linux drivers but as it becomes more popular, this should change.
There are a few major users (Police forces) in the UK who have officially selected linux to avoid the recurring costs of windows XP.

This is my 2nd attempt at this post, Explorer 'ate' my first post, Linux has never done that to me, 'nuff said!

I am running Windows 98. I don't think I have ever seen Linux. Given my current informedness (is that a word?) I will stick with Windows.
Subject: Re: Linux?
I would switch to Linux in a heartbeat, if it wasn't for the lack a decent computer games available in that format.
Subject: Re: Linux?
Well, I do have a Linux distro, Mandrake 8.2, that I would like to install on this computer, if only I can figure out how to run the partitioning software (I have a fear of screwing up the computer big time if I did it wrong!)
Subject: Re: Linux?
Installing Linux on my old PC is something I've been wanting to do for a couple of years now, but never seem to be able to find the time...

Do your homework on Linux before you do. :-/
Linux does have its own problems, one needs to always have someone available for tech support, drivers are not as easy to come by, not many PCs come Linux-ready, software is also an issue.

That was one problem I had with my second PC. I could not get the X-Windows system to run. Turned out the graphics card was not supported. Once I fixed that problem, I have to admit Linux does not look that bad.
