Subject: Youth groups/Cliques

Written By: Criz on 12/11/02 at 10:53 a.m.

What sorts of youth groups/cliques do/did you have at your school/college? (lots of options in that sentance:))

At out college the main ones are:
- Skaters
- Kevs
- Shaz's
- Trendies
- Goths
- Rockers
- and then just normal people who conform slightly more to one than another, but still have their own style.

I guess im in the 'normal' category - with a slight skater girl edge beacuse I always war trousers than are flared and other little items which the 'typical' skater girl would wear - but I'm still my own person as I wear what I like and don't conform to what my friends are wearing.

So how bout all you guys?

There were these following cliques in my high scholl:
wannabe hippies
jocks
goths(about five people)
skaters
preps
There were no punkers in my school, and by my senior year I was one of only two goths.

When I was in MS/HS it consisted of:

Rich B*tches <~~Those who could affors anything and everything

Preppy's <~~~Those who thought they were smarter and better than the rest

Jocks<~~ Self Explanitory

Scuzzies <~~ Consisted of some really nasty people who were just gross (didn't shower, smelled, didn't brush their hair/teeth)

Poor Kids <~~Those who were the nice kids, who couldn't afford nice things but didn't care about that or the money

I always considered myself one of the poor kids.  Getting looked down upon for not having name brand things, or expensive shoes, having to wear hand me downs...

I never really had a clique...me and the other kids that didn't hav a clique sorta formed a group, though...

In HS, there were:

1. The Skaters, The Surfers, and The Stoners
2. The Rich Kids And The Beautiful (they didn't have to belong to any silly clubs or sports to be popular).
3. The Jocks and The Cheerleaders
4. The Wannabe Gangstas/Taggers
5. The Bandos (School Band)
6. The Nerds (scholastic overachievers)
7. The Geeks (comic books, D&D, but not really as intelligent as The Nerds - except in computers).
8. The Normals
9. The Metalheads
10. The Goths and The Punks
11. The rest: The Loners and The Freaks

I was a major geek, but hung around the nerds and sometimes with the stoners.

ROFLMAO....my 15 y.o. just came home jumping up and down yesterday.  It was the last time he was going to have to wear his blues this year.  He was thrilled.

Everywhere I went, I always seemed to end up in a clique of 1 called "The new kid in town." Actually, that is not true because one time I found another. We were in Oklahoma and we were both from NY. It was great going over to her house and hearing her family talk with that great "New Yowk" accent. A touch of home.

Cat...I know that click. I was a former Airforce brat. New York Accent? Imagine being the only child in the 'hood' who used all the syllables in each word and shopped at K-Mart because he liked the clothes there as opposed to the mall...can you say 'OUTCAST?'  :D

Apparently, I came from a really clique-y high school, with cliques everywhere.

I never noticed, because I belonged to none of them.  They all fell into three categories, as far as I was concerned:  Those that were cool, Those that were wads, and Those I had never met.

THE MARCHING BAND
PUNKERS
AND THE RIVAL GANGS

I AM IN THE BAND.  BUT AM DEFINATELY NOT A BAND GEEK

We dont have "cliques" here in New Zealand really thank god!!  ;D
But if you really had to make groups it would be...
-geeks
-gangster wannabes
-normal
-skank wannabes

Thats about it... everything like punk, rocker, "prep" etc goes under normal as people in NZ are usually a bit more open minded about peoples beleifs etc  :P ;D

Ok, In my high school there were,

-> Townies (who hung out in the town centre all the time out of school and wore nothing but highstreet brand clothes)

-> Trevs (sporty people)

-> Goths (Self explanatory really)

-> Moshers (Wannabe Goths)

-> Skaters (and the ones who just looked like skaters)

-> Indie Kids (The ones who looked really scruffy but weren't quite moshers)

-> Freeks (people who didn't want to be in a genre, also known as individuals).

I think I was each one on at least one occasion, I didn't want to comform I just like the idea of dressing how I feel.

When I was in a (mostly-white) suburban high school in the late 80s...

-Jocks-mainly football players and almost all jerks
-Cheerleaders-quite outgoing but strictly hung out with a few certain people
-Burnouts-denim jackets, heavy metal band t-shirts, long hair, reeked of pot, criminally inclined and always bullying other kids
-Skaters-the odd types that hung out together skateboards in hand
-Nerds-the brainy, unstylish guys and a few girls too
-Choir Queers/Band Fags-the musically inclined, I was a part of this group
-Majorettes-technically part of the band but not on a social level, usually the ten best looking girls in the school, quite snotty and usually never gave you the time of day unless you were a jock
-Prostitutes-trashy looking girls, always showing their bodies off, constantly trying to get laid and most of them got pregnant at one point
-Preps-the overstyled and usually snotty types

I'm so glad I come from a small school where people aren't so stereotyped.  But I guess the main "cliques" (if those even REALLY exist at our school)  would be:

preps
thugs
aggies
......and the one I fit into.....uh......I don't think there's really a name for it....nothing really.  If there was a "smart people" group it could be that, but not like your stereotypical smart "nerds."  I mean like at our last academic meet I think we were the only people there that WEREN'T like " *snort* I got a new graphing calculator!!"     :P

Oh I almost forgot! There's the small and strange Lord of the Rings worshippers, if that counts.
But thank God we don't have any "skaters" or "goths."

I think his problem was the fact that you dislike a particular group of people for no apparent reason. I for instance did not like the jocks in my high school because they bullied me. You have to give a reason for such a statement in order to be taken seriously. ::)

I think Goths are just trying to get too much attention, which actually they get the wrong kind of attention...and they just look gross anyway.  I've seen a couple of people at my school try to start to go for the "Gothic look", but naturally, it didn't last.

There is more to being gothic than the way one dresses. It's the way you think and a state of mind. At least it is for me. I am sure that some of the younger generation do it for the attention, but then for others it is a genuine lifestyle. :)

I am sure that the "Hippies" in the 60's got the same reaction at times. My brother's look is very Goth, and he is a really cool guy. He just likes the look, so he would probably fall into the attention getting category ;). Every generation has a rebel group. That never changes.  ;D  btw...my bro used to be into the skater thing...still skates but not as much anymore. But it's all good. In my HS (back in the olden days lol) there were a bunch of us who ganged together but were very different: cowboys, metalheads, preps, average joes, we even had a cheerleader/jock type or two...as I have aged I have learned to embrace the differences.

I went to HS '80-'84.  I'll have to think back but we had
Jocks- We had the jock wall, they would all lean back against the wall, they weren't a bad bunch, not much bullying I remember.

Stoners- These were people who may have smoked pot but did openly smoke cigarettes. Lots of others smoked pot and or cigarettes, but it was always hidden or only at parties.

Christian Clubbers- They were the ones saying positive things and having meetings where people cried a lot.

Choir Geeks- They took themselves way to seriously. there  was always a lot of drama with those people.

Reid Roaders- The group that I was part of, we got the name from the road we used to party on and where many of the people lived.  We were fun, used to scam a lot of beer, many of the guys were musicains and pretty good.

We had the cliques but it wasn't that bad, the mixed a bit and there wasn't to much bullying or pressures.

For me, it's about the look and the music; the style. I thought it was an artistic movement. For the same reason one would not say they lead a New Wave or SynthPop lifestyle.

Ok first of all, choir people are NOT geeks, at least not where I come from.

Second, did u know there was most likely a REASON why people cried a these "meetings"? wow! now u learned something!

and then, just what IS the gothic "lifestyle"?   cuz with the way they dress it looks awfully satanic 2 me

Well, it isn't.  In even the very worst cases, you won't get anything more harmful from goths than self-centeredness, bad angsty poetry and the exclusionary tendencies that you get from all major cliques.  Not satanism.  They wish no harm on you, unless either you or they are a jerkwad.

Christians don't cry just to show off ya know.  Or at least they shouldn't; if so, then they're not really Christians.  :-/   Kinda like the story in the Bible of the Pharisee and the publican.

I was in band, chorus, pep club, physics club, yearbook committe, I was also a varsity cheerleader for almost 6 yrs, so it didn't really put me anywhere......

Well, at my school (thank goodness I won't be there after next year, as a student) there's the smokers, the tenny-boppers, the cool ones, the misfits or the smarty panties who get picked on. OR, on my grade, there's the cool ones, the misfits and the untalked about ones... but that's how every grade gets by the time it's about at year 11 or 12.
I'm in between the cool ones and the misfits, though.  :-/ But I'm nice :( really, I am.
Oh, and I almost forgot the religious ones... how could I do such a thing!!!  ::)
