Subject: Are Cheerleading Stunts Getting Dangerous?
Okay, I was at the High School football championships this weekend. I saw the cheerleaders of the different school doing multi-flips, super-high pyramids, one-legged stands on shoulders, and tossing. I noticed that the bigger schools were more likely to do these stunts than the smaller schools. And the injuries of these girls are increasing due to the difficulty of these stunts, which are also prominent in the National Cheerleading Championships held annually. Should these girls do acrobatic stunts to excite the audience, even though it might end their activities and possibly cause serious damage?
Or is it just part of cheerleading in general?
Subject: Re: Are Cheerleading Stunts Getting Dangerous?
It's practically expected of cheerleaders nowadays. They've been incorporating stunts to showcase acrobatics and flexibility since the girls decided they didn't want to be just eye candy anymore.
Subject: Re: Are Cheerleading Stunts Getting Dangerous?
Now they're just eye candy that can jump and do high somersaults. ::)
I just don't want girls (or boys who cheer) to sustain the same dibilitating injuries as the athletes. The school can do want it wants just as long as the students can graduate and go to college, if they desire.

My cheerleading cousin would not like you making that kind of statement.
In her mind, she IS an athlete.
Subject: Re: Are Cheerleading Stunts Getting Dangerous?
Maybe she is an athlete now. But in the olden days (if you saw the movie "Hoosiers), cheerleaders were assign to do one thing only, and that was to cheer. And nobody could sustain an injury unless it was laryngitis. I hope your athletic cousin does stay injury-free. Not many athletes do. :(

I'm sure they only do these things to try and trick the commentator into a spoonerism when he says (in best David Coleman voice) "Well, that really was a cunning stunt"
;-)

I'm sure the cheerleaders know the risks, Indy. They're much more nimble than I was at their age, anyway ;)

Cheerleaders are not athletes. Criminy. If cheerleaders are athletes then professional chess players are athletes, too.

Funny you should mention that...chess players are lobbying to have their "sport" recognized in the next Olympics. Apparently it requires stamina and superior physical fitness.
As for cheerleaders...it takes a certain level of strength and agility to do some of the stuff they do today. A lot of my friends in high school were cheerleaders and they were extraordinarily fit.
Subject: Re: Are Cheerleading Stunts Getting Dangerous?
Strength and agility I'll give you. They don't compete, though. Athletes compete.
You've got to be kidding about chess players, Earl. I have heard they're talking about taking baseball out of the Olympics, though...

I swear to the Greek gods, they were actually serious about chess in the Olympics. Baseball is too global of a sport to be omitted though.
I think cheerleaders actually do compete. They have choreography contests, much like gymnastics and figure skating. So let's not shortchange these girls, eh? ;)

WELL ANY THING INVOLVING THE SPLITS IS DANGEROUS TO ME!!! :o
Subject: Re: Are Cheerleading Stunts Getting Dangerous?
LOL, GJ34. ;D
I just heard last night that a lot of Indiana high schools are considering doing away with cheerleaders period. I don't know if it's a money issue (like a lot of things the IHSAA does), or an injury thing (insurance, maybe) I lot of Title IX supporters aren't going to like that (even though Title IX does only pertain to colleges).

i dont know i mean why would they do away with it, i mean its one of the most athletic sports out there, in my opionion that is.
Subject: Re: Are Cheerleading Stunts Getting Dangerous?
I don't know either, John. I believe the decision is more financial than convenience and is more a school decision than at the organization level. The again, maybe the stunts are too dangerous or sexual for the conservative IHSAA to take.

yeah
Subject: Re: Are Cheerleading Stunts Getting Dangerous?
Hey guys, Well I am a male cheerleader at a college, and I can tell you from first hand expierience that if the right percautions are taken, the cheerleaders never get hurt. The girls are in fact athletes, because we do compete. there is even a nationals. As far as the stunts being dangerous, well yes they are to some degree. but the girls work up to what they are comfortable with. if they are hurt they did it bc someone messed up and wasn't doing their job. but the girls always know what rick there is. so don't look at it as the schools fault, because in most instances the school doesn't even know what they are doing. the girls come up with what they would like to do and the practise it. so don't look down on the girls, they are bright, and are considered as athletes. if they weren't considered as athletes then they wouldn't be put under the athletic department in the schools. hope this helps you guys.

Way back when, I was a cheerleader and we would ask that new stunts be added. I was also a gymnast for nine years, so was half the squad. High schools are trying to get at the college level when it comes to competitions. At least these are girls are 15 years plus and they are pretty solid in their bone mass.
Look into a gym of little gymnasts and that is where you see major injuries. By the age of 12, these girls have had splints, broken bones, metal inserts, sprang ankles and pulled muscles. They start at the age of 3 and retire at 18.
In short...it is a sport, they are atheletes and they know what they are doing. :D

It's been about one year since I posted this thread. I went to the high school football championships again this year. And I swear that the conservatives at the IHSAA (or the schools themselves) have taken some of the more dangerous stunts out of their cheerleading squads. However, the bigger schools are still doing somersaults and shoulder stands. And there are no male cheerleaders, so the girls actually do there own base work. I guess it depends mainly how closely supervised these stunts are. Then hopefully, some of the danger element is alleviated. :-/

If you've ever seen the Univ. of Kentucky cheerleaders, you've seen the best. They win national championships about every year, and they are spectacular. They are all serious atheletes probably close to Olympic quality. The stunts are awsome and dangerous, don't know the names for all the tosses, but they have basket tosses, and the girls do gainers and twists, flips high in the air. The females weigh in at about 100 lbs, and one of the male cheerleaders weighs over 250 lbs and is 6'3", the others are close in size and weight, over 6' well over 200 lbs.
