Everyone has a right to their own opinions. As long as those same people are willing to accept others' opinions as well. :-X

Subject: Re: pop music sux!
Nickleback, Blink182, Feeder, Alien Ant Farm etc have been classed, by my friend, as 'new metal'.
I don't class this stuff as 'new metal'. More like 'recycled' metal. (Now I'll held under the table) ;)

I'm afraid I don't know much about categorizing bands so I take my friend's word for it. :-[
Subject: Re: pop music sux!
I really dislike all of the music being played on commercial radio these days....Half of the bands are manufactured by record labels and the other half have careers based solely on their looks. It's all pathetic. I will stick to my deathrock and my old school punk ...thank you very much. ;D

I was talking mainly about the Nickelback part... don't worry, I don't like to categorize bands either, but I will NOT call Nickelback metal... no offense to you, Bobby.

No offence taken. I don't know anything about Nickleback, I only go by what, by the sounds of it 'misinformed', mates tell me. What are they categorized as?

I'm not even sure what "new metal" is (I thought you just said "metal"; that will teach me to read more closely :-[ :-/) so that's why I said what I did about Nickelback. I wouldn't call them metal, but I don't know enough about what "new metal" exactly is to know if I should call Nickelback that.
Like I said, I'm bad at categorizing bands... maybe ask someone who is better at putting labels on music then I am... I really should have stayed away from this topic...
And consider yourself lucky you don't know anything about Nickelback!

I think new metal is metal but more newer. :)
Thanks for the advice.

Wow!!! Deja-Vu!!!
My brother said almost the exact same thing about the popular music acts in the 80's....that half were manufactured by the record labels and the other half were coasting on their pretty faces.
It all boils down to choice. If you don't like pop music...don't listen to it. Turn the dial or put on a CD of something you do like. :)

I will NEVER listen to pop music....trust me.
Subject: Re: pop music sux!
It sure does suck... ;) But so are Nicklback, IMO. Most of the bands today have no idea what good music IS at all, and the other half have no idea how to make it... ::)
*Runs and hides from pop fans... ;D *
Subject: Re: pop music sux!
I think we all know who to blame pop music on...everybody. Now, there is the minority who doesn't buy the crap (i.e. the majority of those on this messageboard), but we are the customers...
Subject: Re: pop music sux!
I can't help thinking that if people weren't handed music to them on a plate (especially from radio) then maybe they would make up their own minds.
On radio 1 in Britain for example, I hear the same old songs time and time again - limited choice basically.
No wonder crap songs go into the charts.
Subject: Re: pop music sux!
I dont know anyone who listens to pop music, and never did.
I hate pop music, how the hell can anyone listen to that crap?

Nickelback is pop. Pop with rock mixed together, sure, but pop all the same.

;D I would love to meet your friend. ;)
All of those bands are pop. They might have a rock element as well, but they're all just pop bands with guitars. Especially blink.
POP MUSIC:
1. shortened form of popular music, any form of music that enjoys high popularity
2. music of general appeal to teenagers
3. watered-down version of rock'n'roll and rock music with an emphasis on rhythm and harmony and (usually) a lyrical emphasis on romantic, emotional or puerile subject matter
Subject: Re: pop music sux!
Thanks for that Goreripper.
I wouldn't mind you answering this. Pop music is 'popular music' so when Marilyn Manson gets into the charts singing 'Mobscene' - would you class him as pop?
This is a serious question.

Indeed it is, IMO. Anything on MTV, the Billboard charts, etc. is pop, as well as whatever genre it may be classified as - rock, metal, hip-hop, etc.
Subject: Re: pop music sux!
'Pop Music' is not even a genre, it's contemporary music that has proved to be popular, i.e not classical. The thing is, people use the phrase too losely and refer to things such as boy bands and 'bubble gum' music as 'pop' - and thats why the word is seen to be so negative.
What you have to do is to distinguish good pop songs from bad ones. I seriously dislike it when people claim that EVERY pop song is bad. There are plenty of good pop songs around. You just gotta search for them :) Even if you don't like them, they still can be, good, fun 'pop' songs.

There's this friend of mine Amanda. I always figured she was a total teenybopper, taste-wise, right? Still listened to the Spice Girls. Loves every track on Pink's "Mizzundastood." She had shown a few odd signs of eclecticism (for instance, she had at least heard of Matthew Sweet), but for the most part she seemed to like nothing but the top 40.
So imagine my surprise when I was looking through her CD collection and found, in between records by Eminem and Avril, I found Radiohead's "OK Computer."
"Yeah," she said when I asked her about it. "I used to be into Radiohead... I kinda grew out of them."
She grew out of Radiohead but not out of The Spice Girls. She also knows quite a few bands outside the limited MTV playlist (Elastica, Matthew Sweet). And she's not stupid or anything either. She's an intelligent human being just like the rest of you, presumably. She just decided to listen to stuff that wasn't forced down her throat and decided it wasn't for her.
So what's the moral here? The moral is that some people simply prefer the top 40 sounds and doing so does not make you an idiot or immature or whatever. It's taste. Taste is taste.

That's fine, Kenny (may I call you that?). I think the problem is when people choose not to look beyond their horizons because it goes against the image they are trying to portray.
Me, I'm a 50s-80s chart fan but I was listening to Pantera and Metallica a month back. I found some of their songs to be good.
Here is another point. Certain groups when they become more commercial have their core fans ditch them! Why? For the sake of a bit of pride?

Some bands change their style and sound when they become commercially successful, and that can alienate their core following. It's what happened to Metallica in 1991.
