Subject: Oscars and stuff

It looks like more people wanted to see scantily clad Bond girls than prepubescent wizard boys this weekend...

1. Die Another Day   $47 mil
2. Harry Potter 2     $42 mil
3. Friday After Next $13 mil
4. Santa Clause 2    $10 mil
5. 8 mile                $9 mil

The Ring has cracked $100 mil and My Big Fat Greek Wedding has cracked $200 mil, which is one heck of a nice profit for a $5 million movie :)

I can't wait for LOTR: The Two Towers though.  Check back next week for more $$$ news ;)

I read that too.  Sorta surprised, but I guess not everyone has kids or is interested in witchcraft and wizadry!  ;)

I did read though that they are expecting to get right back up there over Thanksgiving weekend.  We'll see!!

Eh--$148.5 million in 10 days is nothing to sneeze at in any case!  :)

I think the next movie I see will be Friday After Next. I saw a preview and it looks funny. Two black guys chasing after Santa... You only get humor like that in America.

Never like Pierce Brosnan as Bond. Never will see a Bond picture with him in it. I have seen previews enough to get an opinion of him. IMO, Bond crashed as soon as Timothy Dalton left.

Ye must be in the minority...in most people's opinions, Timothy Dalton was only slightly better than Roger Moore, arguably the worst Bond of all time.  Pierce Brosnan has the requisite badassitude to pull Bond off.

Important correction here Rice,
George Lazenby was the worst of the James Bonds.  He only did one and they figured it out pretty quick to not take him back.  I think it was Her Majestys Secret Service that he was in, anyway I remeber he married in it and the wife died off real quick.
Timothy Dalton was darn boring, happy to see him retired.  Pierce is tolerable.

Yes. It looks that way. I believe it is only temporary. Harry Potter 2 will still be in the theatres many more weeks than the Bond movie will. The total revenue of HP2 will surely surpass that of "Die Another Day" - Eventually.  :)

As far as the Bond saga goes....

IMO, the only good Bond was the original - Sean Connery. Roger Moore was passable. Pierce Brosnan seems to have been born for the part. I remember watching him in the 1980's series "Remington Steele" thinking he'd make a fine replacement James Bond. I have no doubt he does a great job.

Though I enjoy his work, I haven't been drawn to purposely watch his latest James Bond movies. Perhaps, it may have something to do with the overall cast. Also, as superficial as this may sound, Bond Girls were made an essential element in the series. None of the contemporaries are a draw, except for pure looks - nothing more. No substance as far as I can tell.

Edited to add: I know they were never meant to have substance per se, but there's just something different about the Bond Girls from yesteryear and the bond girls of today. I guess I can't exactly "put my finger on it".  ???

When I get the urge for Bond, I just go out and rent a Sean Connery classic Bond film.  :)

P.S. I don't think that short haircut does Halle Berry ANY justice. :P

P.S.S. Has anyone watched Die Another Day? Did she do any better in the acting department?

Subject: Re: Da Weekly Box Office Report

George Lazenby was the worst Bond. One film says it all. TImothy Dalton wasn't THAT bad...although his movies could have been more fitting to the Bond name. Roger Moore was OK as Bond, but Sean Connery will always top them all. Pierce Brosnan isn't truly that bad.

A logistical question, if you will...how come everyone around Bond has aged considerably, but Bond himself is still 40-something?

Subject: Re: Da Weekly Box Office Report

Written By: Edgewood_Dirk on 11/25/02 at 02:08 p.m.

Connery is Bond, I think pretty much any Bond fan will agree to that. As far as the others are concerned, I like Moore ok, but I wasn't a huge fan. I've been a fan of Brosnan since Remington Steele, so I have no problems with him. I'm twisted about Dalton. I didn't care for "Licence to Kill", but "The Living Daylights" ranks up there as one of my favorite Bond films ever...

Well well...over the five-day Thanksgiving weekend, it seems the wizard boy has hopped the suave secret agent for first place:

1.  Harry Potter 2    $32.2 million
2.  Bond 20            $31 million
3.  Santa Clause 2   $12.3 million
4.  Treasure Planet  $11.9 million
5.  8 Crazy Nights    $10.1 million

The quasi-hyped "Solaris" starring George Clooney and directed by recent egomaniac Steven Soderberg kinda bombed with a measly $6.8 million in its opening weekend.  Meanwhile, "The Ring" and "Greek Wedding" are still going strong.

I still can't wait for LOTR: Two Towers ;)  Can you?

Smith to Write 'Scary Movie 3'

Cult filmmaker Kevin Smith has been enlisted to pen the next installment of the Scary Movie franchise - according to American entertainment bible Variety. Smith, who has just finished shooting Jersey Girl with Hollywood supercouple Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck, will be working with three other screenwriters including Brian Lynch, Pat Proft and Craig Mazin. Airplane! helmer David Zucker will direct the film, although the Wayans brothers who were involved with both other outings are not on board. Smith says, "It is an honor to be involved with David, one of the creators of Airplane!, which is arguably the funniest movie of all time. Our aim is to make this third in the franchise as funny as that other hysterical third-in-the-franchise flick, The Godfather Part III."

This guy is funny :)

believe it or not, Lazenby walked away from Bond, not the other way around.. I have every Bond movie on DVD.. and I saw it last weekend.. it was good..

funny to hear the Clash's "London Calling" in a Bond movie, but it helped wash that awful Madonna song out of my head.. when a pop princess begins to rely on cheap sound effects for her voice (ala Cher) the end is near..

Halle Berry is good.. certainly the most famous woman to play a Bond girl.. instead of the other way around (where the Bond girl becomes famous afterwards).. I think she got some of the better lines.. John Cleese is actually great as a replacement Q.. not that I wouldn't prefer the old Q (if he hadn't retired and then died), it's just amazing they didn't screw that up..

Connery may be the best Bond, but Pierce is a great Bond as well.. he rescued the series after Timothy Dalton did very little to improve on it.. anyone ignoring the series just because it's not Sean Connery is just being silly..

Die Another Day - $13 mil
Analyze That - $11.3 mil (disappointing!)
Harry Potter 2 - $10 mil

we don't really care about anything else until Star Trek opens next week and LOTR 2 opens the week after.  But I'm sorta excited about "The Hot Chick"...I think the pillow fight scene is funny, but I hope that's not the only thing funny about it.

in other news, "Big Fat Greek Wedding" has finally dropped out of the top 12 after 34 weeks.

Actually, that was the original premise of Rocky V, was a rematch between Rocky and Clubber Lang...but I guess Mr. T fell out of grace and got cancer before they could do it :-/

Except for Rocky, Rocky III and Rocky IV, all of Stallone's movies have been crimes against humanity.  I do like that scene in Cliffhanger where he killed the bad guy with a stalactite though.  That was the first time I had ever seen a stalactite used like that ;D

So sad...is this the beginning of the end for Star Trek?  One would hope not...

The peer reviews for "Nemesis" have been very positive, but with "The Two Towers" coming out next weekend, it might not have enough box office muscle to make it worthwhile to produce another installment :-/

In other news, "Die Another Day" tied for fourth place and is now the highest-grossing Bond movie ever, at over $130 million, and counting.  Harry Potter is slipping, but is over $200 million for the year (as of last week too, I think).

In the first five days, LOTR: The Two Towers has earned an estimated $101.5 million dollars, about a third better than its predecessor.  Meanwhile, Star Trek Nemesis has dropped to 9th place with a measly $4.4 million, possibly signaling the end of the movie franchise for a while despite actually being a very decent movie.  But LOTR was, honestly, much better :)

You have to go see The Two Towers.  Absolutely beautiful choreography, tongue-in-cheek humor, and despite what the critics say, the Ents are AWESOME.  I bet an artsy film is still going to win the Best Picture honors next year, but Two Towers is more than qualified to win out.  That good of a movie.

It's also three hours long, don't forget to pee before you sit down.

It looks like LOTR: The Two Towers is still going strong, having passed the $260 million mark this weekend.  The DiCrapio movie "Catch Me If You Can" is poised to pass the $100 million mark sometime later this week, and "Two Weeks Notice" and "Maid In Manhattan" are pulling well for the romantic comedy crowd.  "Star Trek: Nemesis" has fallen off the top 12, which makes me a sad panda :(

Shanghai Knights is a fun time though, I hope you guys go see it :)

For the record, I DID want to see the chick flick, but I think the buddy flick had more priority ;)

ONE MORE THING!  Oscar nominations are this Tuesday!  Send your karma towards the Hobbit Shire ;)

Just to let you know, Daredevil kinda sucked.  But this is coming from a die-hard comic book fan.  But I was amused throught most of the movie :)

$43 million!  Set some kind of new record for a President's Day weekend.

It's a shame Julianne Moore was snubbed in both of her catagories. She is talented and beautiful and should get an Oscar sometime, if there is any justice. Still, I can't complain that people won the award for the first time. I do have a problem with Roman Polanski winning Best Director over Martin Scorsese. He must be the first fugitive child molester to win a major award.  ::)

I am glad to see Peter O'Toole get an Honorary Oscar, even though, like he said, is not compensation for the many times he was snubbed.

I am glad for all of the winners and was only surprised in a couple of instances - the best actor, I am so glad Adrien Brody won it and I LOVED the smacker he put on Halle Berry. Not that I blame him she is gorgeous!  :) He had a heartfelt speech and I also loved that he won over the orchestra -I'll bet every one there loved that! Thank goodness Jack Nicholson didn't win again for petes sake, he is great but darn, Jack give others a chance!

Best original song.I was as surprised as Barbara Streisand that Eminem won.  ;D :D Thought it was kinda cool too considering Oscar is usually so...stuffy. Hee hee

Michael Moore (hope that is his name)- did he do it for publicity or because that is really how he felt? Doesn't matter it was rude and inappropriate. Even Susan Sarandon just flashed a little peace....and she is usually v. vocal in her opinions.

Chicago is a fantastic show, but I would have been glad for any of the films to get it.  Rest assured LOTR 3 will snatch next years prizes.

Steve Martin cracked me up through the whole thing. Great guy, that Steve.

My only real disappointment? Richard Gere wasn't even nominated. For anyone who has seen Chicago you know he was Phenominal with a capital P!

BTW it was also kind of nice to watch a show that wasn't a CNN or Fox News update....  :-/ seems that is all I watch these days.....

LOTR did win, I think, 2 other academy awards. One of which was best sound effects or sound editing or something.

It was nice she got it. I did feel torn, though, because queen Latifah(sp?) also deserved that academy award.  :-/

I think "Spirit: Stallion Of The Cimarron" should have received that one. It was a beautiful animated feature and the animation was magnificent.

What an idiot!  >:(

He gives protesters a bad name. He made a spectacle of himself and he used an awful and incorrect choice of words. It was out-of-line and inappropriate, especially considering
some of the troops were watching. I'm sure they'd disagree their fighting a "fictitious" war. He didn't deserve the opportunity he received at the academy awards. He pissed all over the academy by tarnishing the ceremony with low class behavior. I lost whatever measure of respect I had for that guy.

I'm glad he was able to be honored while still living!  :D

I'd like to add that I thought it was very nice to see many of the past academy award winners, which added up to 59 before being joined by last night's winners.

I wonder what happened to the others? A couple of past winners that came to mind, but were not shown at all on screen or were present at the ceremony were Shirley Maclane(sp?) and Cher. I wonder if they were even invited.
