Subject: Music Concert Prices

Written By: Race_Bannon on 11/07/02 at 01:11 p.m.

Hey kids!
Local article recently in the Seattle paper about the cost of live music concerts, apperently they have increased on the average over 60% in the past 5 years, this comes during the time of a recent Paul McCartney show with tickets from $75-$250 and Rolling Stones up to $300. :o  I say that is way more than I would pay, but people do.  Also, you have to consider in corporate sponcership covers a lot of the fixed costs that go into a show so obviously people are doing it to make more money.
Is this simple greed?  Or is there a solid reason for it? ???

I have to ad here that I just bought tickets to Pearl Jam for $36 dollars apiece, ;D the cost for any ticket to the show.  That is a Seattle showing of a huge band with local roots with a very devout following, they could have charged a much higher rate.

Yes, greed.  And, they keep raising prices, yet they all continue to sell out shows.  Which means, they know that they can keep rasing prices and people will keep buying tickets.

I'm not sure who to blame:  The greedy musicians that raise the prices, or the people that pay the high prices.

I agree with this observation. It's down-right ludicrous.  ::)

Some of the best concerts I have seen have been free (Collective soul, Forienger), and one of the worst concer I have been to was $50 (Tool).

I've never been to a concert...I like my eardrums unruptured.  And from what I've read, I've saved myself a load of money.

Please note how much money we saved by amusing ourselves with Spaceballs quotes rather than attending such ludicrously expensive concerts...

not really, it all depends on where you are and who you see.  for example I seen Kid Rock in Saginaw twicee and Battle Creek, MI.  Each time ticket prices were like $30.  Where as I seen Kid Rock in Vegas ticket prices were $50.  I seen Incubus in Vegas for $30.  311 in Vegas for $25.  Puddle Of Mudd in Vegas for $9.  I'm seeing Korn here in Saginaw, MI for $32.  As for seeing Britney Spears in Vegas, tickets were like $50-$175.  I was gonna see Creed in Detroit but tickets were $50-$125, and that's not worth it too me, I don't like them that much.

Half the band of Pearl Jam at twice the price!
Actually I like Creed and would see a show for a fair price.  The last time Pearl Jam was in Seattle was '98, Wallflowers and two other bands opened up, great show and all proceeds went to books for the public schools.  The next show is going to charity too.  I love that band.

I haven't gone to a rock/pop concert in years because of the prices.  The last one I actually paid for  was Andreas Vollenwieder, over 8 years ago.  He was at the local Symphony Hall, and high-end tickets were $36 (and worth every single penny--that man puts on an AWESOME show).

Just to play devil's advocate for a moment though, how much of that money does the artist actually get?  Let's say a concert promoter books the venue, pays for hotel and travel accommodations for the artist and road crew, pays for security, pays for food, pays for electricity and pays for advertising.  How much does this cost?  Is the promoter looking to make back all the money laid out (plus and obscene profit)?

I'm going to be sending the link to this topic to a friend of mine who works in the music biz.  If she doesn't know, some of her contacts might.

Cool! Would be great to hear the money end of this.  I can imagine that some venues cost a lot more than others, playing Madison Square Garden I'm sure would be more money than Podunk, Iowa (sorry Iowan's) Garden.  Also, there are some bands that require a lot more security than others and some venues may very well require more too.

I went to see a local band (Kanvas, from Bolton-upon-dearne) play in a tiny little pub last night for the sum of £1 ($1.5 for US peeps) and they were great - much better than spending £20 to see the Manic Street Preachers playing in an arena.  ;D
