The Bengals are wretched, and have been for a decade.  What's the problem with them?  I mean, every team seems to bob up every five or six years and makes a serious run at respectability.  The Bengals seem mired in some type of Bermuda Triangle...

Well, in Minnesota we're talking about the "Les Steckel line".  He was a mid-80s Vikings coach, came in right after Bud Grant.  We had 3 wins in Steckel's year, and he's been the measure of crappiness up here.  This year's model has 2 wins but nobody's really sure where number three is coming from.  But our six foot eight, three hundred seventy pound left tackle is in camp, so I just we won't lose again this year...

The Colts may not be the worst team in pro-football, but they are the most disappointing year in and year out, the only exception being 2000 where they won 12 games and still lost in the first round of the playoffs. If they can't win with Tony Dungy, it's time to help them load up the Mayflower boxes and head West. :(

Congrats, Indy.  I've started hearing rumblings about Manning, so it's nice to see him come out with a strong game.

The Vikings stumbled again today.  Daunte Culpepper was pulled in the third quarter, and you're hearing him being compared to Kordell Stewart more and more often.  Todd Bouman came in and mini-sparked the offense.  Not enough to win, mind you, but enough to start a controversy.
We don't have a defensive secondary.

I'm gald Manning had the game he is capable of making every game.
As for a quarterback controversy, while it is true that Culpepper is not the player he was in his rookie year, the fault for the Vikings woes has to be Owner Red McCombs and "Coach" Mike Tice, who apparently was the only one McCombs could afford. He, Dallas Cowboy skipper Dave Campo, and the Bungles' Dick LeBeau have got to be the worst coaches in the NFL, and are the top candidates for getting the axe. :(
BTW, Todd Boumann is not the answer. If the Rams can part with either Warner or Bulger, then the Vikes should give up on the ones they have now. And Ken Dorsey isn't the savior either.

I don't think any of the brain trust are ready to give up on Culpepper yet.  He was fantastic a couple of years ago.  Now he's totally lost... They're still talking about him as the franchise quarterback.  Culpepper's decline started with the retirement of Robert Smith and the hemorrhage of talent from the offensive line.  McKinnie might be the answer, but not this year -- (he is one seriously big hombre :o)

The Vike's need help in the secondary desperately, but they seem institutionally unable to pull the trigger for defensive help in the first round.  If they continue to stumble this year, and there's no reason to believe they won't, they should have many attractive options come draft day.

The Jets still have hope! 4-5 and they have a shot at winning the division. Unheard of. How about the Giants. Big game next week against the Redskins. This season is unbelievable so far. This is the most competitive NFL season ever but I think in the end the Packers are going to win but you never you know. That 1 year Minnesota went 15-1 and lost to the Falcons in the playoffs so you never know.

The Vikings officially have a quarterback controversy.  Daunte Culpepper was ineffective again Sunday.  He was loudly booed by the crowd, and Todd Bouman was just as loudly cheered when he replaced him in the third quarterback.  Bouman captained two four quarter touchdowns, was able to stretch the field and hit Randy Moss for some long gains, and would have won the game except for the collapse of the defense.

Green Bay comes to Minnesota this week.

Yeah, but they ain't letting Smith touch the "rock" no more after he busted Payton's record.
Speaking of domes, the cheeseheads have crossed the border and liquor sales are WAY up.  Favre has had middling to poor success at the Metrodome, (oops.... forgot.... it's Metrodome, without the 'the') and there's a die hard at work who thinks we'll be able to catch the Packers "flat footed".  My guess is that the Vikes get buried and lose by at least 30 points.  Favre has got to be one of the five top players of all time.

And speaking of Sagnastian, why don't you challenge Fett69?  I'd love to challenge Dude this week…

Each team gets the ball on the same end of the field on the 35 yard line going in. If the first team scores (regardless of how; touchdown, one point ex point or 2, field goal) the other team must match or beat it (ie if  team#1 scores a field goal, team #2 can score a touchdown and win the game there) If they score (or not) equal points, they start over with team #1 again. After the 2nd overtime, they must go for 2 points on conversions after touchdowns. WHEW!! ::) Hope this answers your question, Rice. ;)

As of 11/24, 8 PM EST...

In the AFC, teams in the six playoff positions are Miami, Pittsburgh, Indianapolis, Denver, San Diego and Oakland.

If Indy wins tonight, the AFC West has a 3-way tie for first place.  I'm not sure which AFC West team will have the tie-breaker though, but there are six games left to figure that out :)  Two of the AFC West teams would qualify for the wild cards though.

In the NFC, teams in the six playoff positions are Philly, Green Bay, Tampa Bay, SF, with the two wild cards going to Atlanta and New Orleans.  If the Packers win their next game they clinch their division, which amuses me to no end.

For kicks: Rich Gannon is still on pace to break Dan Marino's pass yardage record for a season.  At the beginning of the day he was on pace for 5112 yards...now it may be more since he topped 300 yards for the 8th or 9th time this season.

UPDATE: Indy 3, Denver 0 in 1st quarter (keep in mind that is IS still the 1st quarter, no getting excited yet!)  :)

The only thing keeping us in the north country interested is waiting to see if coach Mike Tice is able to drag the Vikings over the Les Steckel Line.  They need one more win, and frankly, only a die hard would risk any money on their chances.
Their only real chance of scoring one more win is when they play the Lions in week 17.  It's at Detroit, but Lions' coach Marty Morninweg is proving incompetence of historic proportions.  How can someone win an OT coin toss and elect to kick?  I don't care if there's a damn typhoon blowing in your face...

Thanks RnRF. To tell you the truth, I thought it was due for Vanderjagt to kick those field goals because he was in the biggest slump of his career. Congratulations on a great game by the Broncos without Griese. Beuerlein has had several of these games that he could have won, but didn't. He was always a good quarterback, just not good enough to win games like Griese or Elway. I hope the Broncos do win the division over the Raiders and Chargers. Marty Mornhinweg is dangerous and needs to be stopped.  Here's a short hit from ESPN:
After winning the coin toss to start overtime on Nov. 24 against the Bears, the Lions decided to play defense first with a strong 17 mph wind at their backs instead of taking the ball. "Knowing the outcome of this game, I wouldn't do it again," coach Marty Mornhinweg said. "But in a similar situation, I would. I had complete confidence in our defense up to that point. I had complete confidence we would get a stop. The wind knocked the ball off the tee when we were kicking off. It was substantial, that was my rationale." But given the ball first, Jim Miller moved the Bears from their own 35 to the Detroit 22, hitting third down passes of 14 and 15 yards to Marty Booker and then connecting again with a 5-yarder to Dez White on fourth-and-3 from the Detroit 30 to get Bears' kicker Paul Edinger in position for the game winner. "You always want to take the ball," Edinger said. "It's sudden death."

It should be noted that his "complete confidence" was held in a defense that had given up 10 points in the last three minutes of the fourth quarter against the Chicago Bears.  The only good Mornhinweg has done this year is to take the tarnish off the reputation of Wayne Fontes.

Hi Steve. The Lions should hire a new coach, but the question is who? My guess is they should rebuild the team, and get a proven college coach like Lou Holtz. Look what he did to the USC Cocks 1-10 record. He got them to a bowl game his very first year. Secondly, I think you need a better running back than Stewart. You need someone like a Barry Sanders. I was wishing he would come out of retirement, just so he could own the rushing record (he is less than one seasons work away). I would rather have a great running back like Sanders have it then Emmit Smith who got luck behind an awsome line, and a QB who streched defenses out. Smith would not have half his yards if D's stacked 8 in the box and he did not have his all-pro line. I would like to see Detriot get competitive in the central again.

I dunno, John.  I think Sanders would help, but the Lions need a major overhaul.

Actually, the 1-10 season was Holtz first at USC (South Carolina). The media was all over that record saying that Lou was over the hill in his coaching. He has taken every college team to a bowl game, and won the championship with Notre Dame. Still, based on his past record with the Jets, I wouldn't consider another pro stint.

Unfortunately for the Redskins, they hired a "genius" to run their team on the field.  Who's going to get prodded down the gangplank first, Steve Spurrier or Marty Mornhinweg?

I don't know what it takes to win in the NFL, but the last person I'd want on board was a coach who carried his "genius" in a large ego sack... for instance, Mornhinweg has made such desperately inept blunders I think he's reached the point where he's making some seriously strange decisions and praying that lightning strikes... you see!!! kicking off in overtime was, well, yeah maybe I am a little bit of a genius but ya see I knew the defense would hold them... no, I can't explain it son, it's just something you know... no, I didn't consider it a risk at all, cause you see, I understand this game...

Like Steve said, Warner wasn't playing too well today...Philly wins a squeaker, 10-3.

As of now, Denver and SD are tied in overtime, and if they win on a field goal I am calling the league and telling them to change the overtime format RIGHT NOW.  Winning on a field goal in overtime is the pansiest way to win a football game I know.  Maybe it's just me, but how about a challenge, huh?

Alright, it's cool, the Broncs turned it over or something (I'm following this online).  And of course SD wins on a field goal.  SD 30, Denver 27.  That shouldn't even be a win.  What a bunch of pansies.  I hate field goals in overtime.  Did I say that already?

They should make a rule that if you elect to use a field goal in overtime, that it automatically gives the other team a possession to tie or win.  Field goals are so lame.  *rant rant rant rant*

Subject: Re: Pro Football

I'm quite the opposite of you on this topic. I find touchdowns in overtime unnecessary unless there is a clear path ahead. A touchdown when you are close enough to kick a field goal is selfish and so in-your-face, IMHO. Teams have shot themselves in the foot by trying to score an OT touchdown, and only succeeding in fumbling away a sure victory. I'm glad Christie got the chance to redeem himself for the Chargers, even though the Broncos lost on a failed Elam attempt that is usually a sure thing.
If you do want to make a case for touchdowns, then you might as well do what the colleges and high school teams do and start from the 20 yard line. That is if you'd rather see TDs back and forth until there's a winner. :-/

It might be, but games like the Broncos-Chargers game come much too late for a serve and volley game like the colleges. The only way that'll happen in pro football will be if the league and the networks can be persuaded to add more commercials and becoming more popular. That would be the only benefit.

Which means Oakland is once again tied for AFC West lead, and potentially in the running for home field advantage...depending on how all this tiebreaker crap works.

The Vikings have a long and happy history of supplying NFL teams with starting quarterbacks.  Not only did we get rid of Gannon, but Brad Johnson and Jay Fieldler were ours, too.  Not to mention Jeff George, now riding the pine for the Seattle Seahawks.  Yeah, he was a headache and a pain in the can, but that man has a cannon...

Of course, we still have Daunte... who seems to be disintegrating before our eyes.  There's something seriously wrong with his ability to read a defense... a friends brother was at the game Sunday and he said Moss was open with single coverage most of the game but Culpepper didn't throw him the ball.  Almost like he didn't see him.  A big dump-Moss/dump-Culpepper mood is developing up here in God's country.

That means the Titans are virtually ahead of the Colts despite having the same record. But i hope the Colts win both their remaining home games and Tennessee loses at least one. I would still like the Titans to be in the playoffs so we can smoke them and then go to The Big Game.

The Vikings beat yet another playoff caliber team, the Miami Dolphins.  Yeah, it's late in the year and it was at home and they aren't playing for anything, but...

It indicates that this team hasn't quit, and it's better to develop a winning trend going into the off-season.  Man they need help in the secondary, though.

Subject: Re: Pro Football

Written By: Indy Gent on 12/21/02 at 07:02 p.m.

The Dolphins losing means that the Colts only need to beat the Giants at the Dome to get into then playoffs. Only 1 problem though. The Colts have played miserably at home this year. They barely beat the Bungles, and they've been outplayed by both the Fins and Titans at home. I hope this isn't one of those games where they're behind by three touchdowns early. The Giants D won't blow a 3 TD lead.

And they still could have won without the blocked punt or Manning's 2 INTs. I don't know if they eliminates the Colts from the playoffs, but I wouldn't count on Miami losing two in a row this late in the season. (Armani Toomer, 204 yards and 3 TDs.)
As for the Bengals, I'm glad for them. They played a heck of a defensive game again a team that has struggled mightily offensively. Aaron Brooks is not the answer for the Saints.

The rules at the time said if it hit an opposing player touches the ball first then the offensive guy caught it....well, John may not be over it but I'm sure if the situation were reversed he wouldn't mind a bit...I cite as examples....The "Holy Roller", the partial deflating of footballs before the opposing team attempted a field goal, the illegal use of "Stick'em" by the safeties...the illegal hit on Lynn Swan in a playoff game where he was knocked out the week before SuperBowl X-vs the Cowpies, and by far the worst...George Atkisons book "They Call Me Assasin" being out just after he paralyzed Patroit reciever Daryll Stingley in 1976 with yet another illegal hit....why weren't those thugs put in jail (I know...it's Football, not ballet).  That only scratches the surface as to why I hate the raiders...oh and let's not forget the "Man" and I use the term loosely, who sat by and enjoyed all of this...Al "The Slime" Davis.  I watched a special about the 70's a while back on ESPN that exposed the mentality of some of these neanderthals...Phil Villapiano was bragiing about how the Raiders had beaten the Steelers in the 1976-77 AFC Championship game, failing of course to mention that Pittsburgh was without thier starting backfield of Franco harris and Rocky Blier, due to injury, he goes on to show his ring and says whenever he visits Pittsburgh on business he proudly shows it off.  Well he may have 1 but the Steelers won 4 in a 6 year span! Yeah, but a guy like Farve is magic in the pocket, or snaking his way forward, or sideways, outta the pocket.  Young's not bad, but at their best, in a situation like this, I want Farve under center.

As for Edge, I think it's time we drafted an offensive lineman in April because he can't (or won't) run into defenders like he use to.

Browns-14   Steelers-0   as I write.  The strangeness continues.

I read an ESPN magazine article by and about EJames.  It was infuriating and illuminating at the same time (granted, it was written almost a year ago now).
What struck me was the whine he kept up about re-negotiating his contract.  The contract he was playing under when this was written was incentive laden, so he said that he had to put personal goals ahead of team goals (i.e., I'm going to try to score a touchdown rather than run time off the clock, no matter what the game conditions dictate).  The story almost made you feel sympathy for him.  Almost.

I can't believe the Giants lost. What are the Giants thinking  putting Jason Sehorn on Terrrel Owens? The Niners exploited that match-up to the fullest. Why wasn't Will Peterson or Will Allen covering Owens? What is up with Shaun Williams fighting with Terrell Owens? As an opponent you have to learn to ignore Owens tactics like that. I'm not taking anything away from Owens since he's the best wide reciever in the league. The Giants just beat themselves.

Two days after a disappointing playoff exit, Brett Favre announced Monday he will return for another season with the Packers.

There had been speculation that Favre might decide to retire, but the future Hall of Fame quarterback has decided to come back.

Favre struggled a bit during the second half of the season after being slowed by a knee injury. The Packers lost to the Falcons 27-7 in the wild card round of the playoffs on Saturday. It was the first home playoff loss for the Packers in team history.

There also had been speculation that the Packers might try to draft Florida's Rex Grossman and groom him as a replacement for Favre. Grossman announced last week that he will turn pro. Ron Wolf, a consultant for the Packers and their former general manager, told ESPN's Chris Mortensen last week that Grossman reminds him of Favre more than any college quarterback he's seen in the past 10 years.

To clear some things up:

NEW YORK -- Giants holder Matt Allen could not have spiked the botched snap on the final play of New York's loss to the San Francisco 49ers.

It's against the rules.

Mike Pereira, the NFL supervisor of officials, confirmed Monday that Allen would not have been allowed to immediately spike the ball because it was a long snap. The only time a player can spike the ball is when he takes the snap from under the center.

With six seconds left Sunday and the Giants trailing 39-38, Matt Bryant lined up to try a potential game-winning 41-yard field goal. The snap from newly signed Trey Junkin was in the dirt. Allen fumbled the ball, then made a desperation pass downfield to what turned out to be an ineligible receiver, guard Rich Seubert.

Fox commentator Cris Collinsworth said at the time that since it was third down, Allen could have spiked the ball, giving the Giants another chance at a kick. Afterward, on the Fox postgame show, other commentators agreed.

Pereira said the only other option would have been to throw to an eligible receiver.

True enough...but what was his excuse the rest of the season?  He started off with a bang and then fizzled miserably!

And now it turns out the NFL has said that the Giants should have had one more "untimed down" as he WAS an eligible receiver and that a game can not end on offsetting penalties. It should have gone back to the original line of scrimmage and they should have been able to try the FG again. I assume he woulda missed again, however that will never be known...now who do I cheer for?

Go Eagles? (I have friends in Philly...yep, I have friends...)

Here's the bets I made for week two of the playoffs.  Five bucks a game:

Each of us took one upset. Mine was the Jets over the Raiders.  Sorry, Earl, but this is their year, and their offense is hitting its stride and running on all cylinders.   Pa-Pa-Pa-Penny and the Jets   ;D

Jacques, my rube opponent, chose the Falcons over the Eagles as his upset game.  Vick might be streaked lightning, but a real defense (like, say, the Bucs), are able to shut him down.  And when you shut down Vick, you shut down the Falcons.

Finally, I took the 'Niners and five points against the Buccaneers.  The 'Niners have some serious nitro on offense.  Still, my guess is the Bucs will just squeak by, say.... ummmm.... 19-17.

San Francisco couldn't steal this game today!  And for the sake of Rice and Jess...Congrats to the raiders....for now.  Wow...to think the Super Bowl could become a rematch of #15 in January 1981...the only one I've missed watching since #5....OR it could be Gruden and the Bucs vs Chuckys old team...either way...I am rooting for the NFC this year...I don't think the Titans stand a chance against Oakland next week.

Well, the Jets got sent home. They just don't match up with the Raiders well at all. I was mad too Charles Woodson should have been called for pass interference twice but ultimately you cannot turn over the ball 3 times to a team like the Raiders. I'll watch the Super Bowl. I think the Raiders are just destined to win. I don't like the Eagles at all even though McNabb is a good athelete. I would like to see the Raiders win actually because I liked Charles Woodson when he played for Michigan and Gannon deserves a Super Bowl(coming from a Jet fan this seems strange.) The Steelers just keep on losing in the playoffs, how come cowher's job has never been in jepeordy like Steve Mariucci? Steve Marriucci is too criticized by the media. If I was an owner in the NFL I would defintely hire Marriucci. I mean Gruden, Andy Reid, and Bill Parcells are great coaches but Marriucci is definately a good coach(this is coming from a guy who roots for the Giants as well, I am a New York Football fan.)

It looks like it'll be a rehash of Super Bowl XV, where the 11-5 Oakland Raiders defeated the 12-4 Philadelphia Eagles 27-10. Can anyone say deja vu? :-/

Unless you're excited about two weeks of media overload on John Gruden/Al Davis stories, let's fervently pray its Philadelphia-Oakland.  I believe it'll be Tampa-Oakland, but my record this weekend is so pathetic...

I ferverently pray it's Tampa-Tennessee, ever though I don't think both road teams will win next week. As for the Davis/Gruden stories, would you rather hear McNabb-Gannon stories? Not me!

If only because the NFL admitted the refs screwed up. But they would never do that if the Jets-Colts game was closer than it was and the Jets had a chance to win on a field goal.
As for Dude, you are entitled to your opinion as you are biased for your team. The fact is the refs made the correct call and the Coach should not complain. Wouldn't you feel the same if the Tennessee defender ran into the Steeler kicker?  ???

but can I STILL b*tch about that Forty-Niner "Win" last week?  That WAS the refs who handed them the win >:(

Sports reporting is the most monotonous "profession" ever.  I hate sports cliches and tired quotes ("We just didn't execute and score as many points as the other team").  I just say let the best team win, and if it's the Raiders, more power to them ;)

And we Hoosiers, being Colts fans, have a right to do likewise even though it will eventually lead to either on eof two things: 1. That the city will once again foot the bill for a brand new stadium for our drugged up owner and self-righteous team president. or 2. The Colts will be shipped to another city that doesn't care about them either. ::)

The Colts need to teach Manning how NOT to throw INTs...

So, Bucs-Eagles and Titans-Raiders.  What's your bet?

I'm afraid the INT throwing was inbeted by Peyton's father, Archie, otherwise known as Mr. Never-Had-A-Winning-Season.
And Coach Dungy isn't the man to snap his QB out of that rut.

Hoping to recoup my $5 weekend loss, I took the Eagles straight up over the Bucs, Raiders oughta devastate the Titans.

Of course, if it turns out to be a Bucs-Raiders SuperBowl, what'd'ya figure the overplayed stories will be?  Here's a few of my guesses:
- John Gruden and Al Davis
- Two ex-Viking quarterbacks facing each other, Brad "Opie" Johnson and Rich "The Cannon" Gannon
- Last call for two Hall of Fame players - Jerry Rice and Tim Brown
- At least one feature story on the weird, weird Raider fans

Well, Earl, they did beat Chicago in cold and windy Chicago, so that monkey is off their back.  And McNabb is still a leetle rusty.  And Duce Staley was temporarily paralyzed over the weekend.  And the Bucs do have an awesome defense.

As long as they don't break Brad Johnson, the Bucs have a legitimate shot.

They just fired Steve Mariucci, the 49ers did.  I hate that team.  Here they have a good coach (an EXCELLENT coach) who brought them to the playoffs consistently and they can him after he orchestrated one of the greatest comebacks in playoff football.  For shame.

He'll find a job soon though.

You can probably delete your other thread, Indy, or at least dedicate it exclusively to the Super Bowl ;)

They fired the Mooch, huh?  Boy, that guy has got to have some serious haliotosis or something... they've remained competitive while losing both Jerry Rice and Steve Young.  That's pretty remarkable, when you think about it.

Like I told Jessica last night....Denver is 2-4 in "The Big Game" and so I want the Raiders to make it then lose...to drop thier Super Bowl record to 3-2...if they play the Eagles then Philly gets a chance to avenge the trouncing they absorbed in #XV...and if they play the Bucs...Chucky can beat his old team....he IS one heck of a coach!
