Subject: How Much Cash to you carry?
I noticed that in the past couple of years I rarely have cash with me. Ever since the debit, then the Visa debit cards came out I don't find it necessary. I don't know if carrying less cash is saving me from spending or carrying a card that is accepted most places is causing me to spend more. ???
Subject: Re: How Much Cash to you carry?
As a standard practice, very little. I tend to use my debit card everywhere, unless I know ahead of time that I will need cash for something.
Subject: Re: How Much Cash to you carry?
I usually carry about $20. Unless I am going to the grocery store. Then it is a little more, like $50. I don't like to write checks unless I absolutely have to. I don't have a debit card. My bank won't give me one because I have bad credit. I thought this was dumb. It is not like I wanted overdraft or a line of credit. Just a debit card. I love debit cards. It is much easier to write out a debit in your register than write an entire check...especially at the store.
Subject: Re: How Much Cash to you carry?
I dont use any form of payment other than a debit card unless I can't avoid it (like McDs.). It's a wonderful benefit to be able to use a card to debit money out of your checking account and have it treated like a credit card. No fees, no asking for the SSN, etc.
Of course, now we have to be more careful, I had someone swipe my debit card # just recently, and ordered a website hosting for $250. I caught it before he charged more than that, but it could have been alot worse. Then we were without cards for 2 weeks until the replacements arrived. That really makes you appreciate the ease of use. No ATM, no debit charges, etc. It stunk.
Who do these card # thieves think they are? I worked for that money, you didn't. Sorry, I'm a little touchy on that subject recently.
Anyway, carry on my wayward sons

I usually carry no more than $100 on me but I carry cash for emergencies. I love my debit card. I hate to get behind people at stores who have to pay for their purchases with a check because they are too lazy to get a debit card. I hate credit cards, but I love my debit card.

Usually under $20, unless I know I'm going to a place that's cash only (like a craft fair). I use my credit card for everything else, but only because I am able to pay off the entire bill each month, so I never pay any of the extras.
Subject: Re: How Much Cash to you carry?
I write maybe a check a month now. Wonderful not having to go that paper trail.

Lordy, girl, have you ever seen someone in an ISF spiral? It's not pretty... criminal, in my book. The bank usually charges you about $25 for each ISF check. They'll draw it out of the savings account, but you're still dinged $25 per. It can be very expensive living paycheck to paycheck. And if your credit is bad, you can't buy overdraft insurance.
I'm averse to writing check, but even more averse to credit and debit cards.
Subject: Re: How Much Cash to you carry?
I usually don't have more than $20 in cash on me at any time unless I'm traveling. I use my debit card for everything! I don't know how I ever lived without it!!
Subject: Re: How Much Cash to you carry?
Uhhh, about 50 cents. Sometimes a dollar if I want to buy a pop or chips. I only carry money if I'm going to the city or something. I just don't risk it at school... I always see people stealing other people's money in the locker rooms, etc.
Subject: Re: How Much Cash to you carry?
I still tend to use cash for most things, as I find that limits my desire to impulse buy.
Therefore I don't carry a lot around, if I want something that is reasonably expensive, I have my own 'cooling off' period...

Subject: Re: How Much Cash to you carry?
You don't think I would tell anyone here (or anywhere) how much I have, would you?! ;) All I can say is that it depends on how much I need. 8)
Subject: Re: How Much Cash to you carry?
I carry money for the day plus emergency money for when the train is stuck or something. -howard-
Subject: Re: How Much Cash to you carry?
I don't feel comfortable carrying anything less an $50....I pay the old fashion way. I need to see the money disappearing out of my hands or it will be too easy for me to spend more than I should.
Subject: Re: How Much Cash to you carry?
I usually pay for stuff in cash. The debit card may be easy to use but it is a BIG risk.
Subject: Re: How Much Cash to you carry?
The debit card doens't get me in trouble, now credit cards do and I have only one of those.

That is why I don't want overdraft. Just a debit card.

I'm big on cash. I carry up to $200 for the week. Maybe more if I'm going away. I do it the old-fashioned way - no ATM cards. I'm going to make those banks keep real people at their locations. It helps me regulate, too.
I don't like magnetic strips creating a trail. I use my credit card (and wouldn't bother w/another debit, per magnetic) when the purchase is too big to cut into my weekly "allowance". I only carry 1 credit card and don't want any others. There's no point. I'm not crazy about check-writing, either, but that's less paranoia and more non-convenience.
Cracks me up how people say you shouldn't carry REAL money cuz you'll get robbed - well, they get your credit card, too, don't they?? And they can spend on that too until you call?? Duh! ::)
Subject: Re: How Much Cash to you carry?
Very little. Like a lot of other people said, unless I know I am going to need cash and the place won't take checks or debit cards. I also tend to carry a little more if we're going out of town and I know it's going to cost $2 to withdraw money from an ATM! Call me cheap, but I don't like having to pay to get ahold of my own money. I used to mainly write checks, but nowadays with so darned many kids in tow, I find the debit/check card is so much quicker and easier! But, it can get you in trouble, because it's easy to forget to write it down, unlike checks (I use duplicates) where you can SEE what you spent, and see if your numbers get off in the register.
Also, I agree that credit or debit cards aren't necessarily "safer"..I mean, sure, in a store it could rise a question, but if the person can order from the net quicker than I can report it stolen, well, then I'm basically screwed.
I always wonder--I just had a friend robbed outside Kmart--anyway, will the guy still rob me if I explain to him that he's honestly not going to find any money in the wallet? Or will he just shoot me because he's p*ssed about it?? ::)

Ya know what I love?
Old women in grocery store lines that carry cash but always have to give the exact change. They drive me nuts digging through there change purse with shaking hands hands to get the last couple of pennies. I have to refrain from saying "never mind, I'll cover the rest" and shooing them away.
I'm a jerk, but a jerk with a schedule to keep.

You think that's bad? One of my pet peeves are penny dishes. I refuse to take pennies out of them and squawk like a bruised rooster if a cashier puts my penny change into the dish (if a cashier knows you they'll walk all over you). Hey, it may only be a penny, but I earned it...
Subject: Re: How Much Cash to you carry?
I happily throw my pennies in, less weight to carry around.
Subject: Re: How Much Cash do you carry?
I don't like credit cards because they make me think I can spend money that I don't really have...so I agree that a debit card is the way to go. $20 in cash is usually enough for a meal/getting home on public transit :)

When I went on vacation this summer, I took a lot of cash with me. It just so happened that the bank I do business with had branches down there too, so I could have withdrawn money on one of their ATM's and it would not have cost me a cent since it was on the same bank! Luckily, I did not have to use an ATM while I was down there…
Subject: Re: How Much Cash to you carry?
It depends on where i'm going. I try to cary an appropriate amount where ever i go.
Subject: Re: How Much Cash to you carry?
between 15 and 20 dollars for that"just in case". -howard-
Subject: Re: How Much Cash to you carry?
I tend to carry about $40-$60 on any given day. I am overseas in the military and here in europe we are unable to get a debit card so those of us that have been here for 8 years we are limited. Its either cash or check.
