Subject: When will the '80s Generation control the Media?

Written By: Paul S. on 10/07/02 at 10:56 a.m.

As I've gotten older, I've been wondering about a lot of things.  I'm 24 years old, so while I grew up in the '80's, it was my childhood, not my teen or young adult years.  Being born in 1978, I'm part of the childhood aspect of the '80s generation, not the teen/young adult crowd.  Anyway, for years now the media has been controlled by the '60's generation.  All we hear, at least all I've heard since the Eighties have been the Sixties, the Sixties, the Sixties.  Vietnam, hippies, Nixon, the moon landing, JFK and all that stuff.  These are the classic Baby Boomers.

But I've been thinking about when the shift will occur, and we can all see it SLOWLY (or maybe not)  but surely happenning already with all these commericials with '80s songs in them.  And the many '80s themed movies that have been popping up recently.  Most people that call themselves the '80s generation were born in that 1963 to 1971/'72 time frame.  They're all in their 30s, but by the end of the 2000s, like in 2008, 2009, the bulk of that crowd will haved moved into their 40s.  Generally people in their 40s are old enough to control the media and dictate what everyone else sees and hears.  So by the end of the 2000s, do you think we will stop hearing about the '60s and the media, now controlled by the '80s generation will talk about nothing but Bon Jovi and Eddie Van Halen?

I know the '70's generation did make their voice known in the 1990's and they still are doing that now, but they are usually seen as nothing but an extension of the '60's generation anyway.  I mean the hell is the difference between the '60's and '70's?  The '70's always looked like the same animal as the '60's to me.  But the '80's marked the arrival of a different generation from the Baby Boomers, and I am wondering when that crowd will wrestle control of the media from the Boomers.  The '80's generation will then be officially seen as the "adults" of the world, while the Boomer crowd will be moved into the role of grandpa and grandma.

I kinda of see what your getting at and, well I'm sure gonna try when (well, *if* - but I have hope!) I eventually get into the media! Even though I was born in '84, I have a great passion for the decade I was born in. I have been interested in the Media for many years and have developed good skills as a writer, and hope to go into the field of journalism.

I think things are starting to move towards the 80's - there have been quite a few documentariers around of late. Also, fashion is coming back and there are so many covers and samples of 80s hits around. I've had my 80's music revival article published by the BBC which states how the 80s should no longer be umentionable - I don't understand how so many despise the decade. Luckily - most people on this board love it :)

The difference between the 60s and the 70s is the difference between The Summer of Love and Altamont.  Things got ugly in the 70s...

Another way to look at it.  Life was good before John married Yoko.  Life was bad afterwards.
