Subject: Whitney Houston - What the hell happened?
Ah, Whitney. Didn't she almost have it all.
Talent is a precious thing. Talent is not to be wasted. Talent is what Whitney is losing faster and faster every day. After squandering most of her career on crap music and crack cocaine, she has really really lost it. I heard her new song. It's awful. That beautiful powerful voice that made even her worst songs listenable? It's not totally gone, but you can see how badly in decline it is. So sad.
Thoughts?

I Hate her, hate her, hate her! I could stand her before that god awful Bodyguard soundtrack, but now I can't. My ears bleed at the slightest mention of her name. If I could erase one song from my memory it would be "I will always love you", but it wouldn't matter because I would just have to hear it the next day on the musak at work. As for her new song I have not heard it yet, but I already know it sucks.

I agree. Whitney truly has squandered an incredible talent. Her career fell into shambles once she married Bobby Brown and it further deteriorates with each passing day. It truly is sad... ???
Subject: Re: Whitney Houston - What the hell happened?
I'm afraid I afraid with everyone here that Whitney is not even half the talent she was. But she is not the first, nor the last. Judy Garland and Rita Hayworth had fallen after they peaked. And Mariah Carey will follow Whitney soon. :(

I used to enjoy her music 1985 thru 1989 and that was basically it.didn't care for her music after the early 90's. -howard-

What the Hell happened to Whitney Houston?
Two words: Bobby Brown.
'Nuff said.

Judy fell? Are you kidding? Judy's biggest trouble was her character weakness and subsequent drug reliance. If anything hurt her talent, it was drugs - and only later. But she still had the sheer ability. Sometimes it was just ruined by her being drugged up, that's all.

I would say that was also the film company's fault for having her on all kinds of drugs before she was 15.Shocking what they got away with in those days really.

Yes, partly their fault but frankly, she was rather unstable to begin w/and very insecure. I'm sure then they thought it was no big deal - just give them pep pills to help them stay awake and downers to go to sleep. I don't know just how unethical anyone thought it was, even if some surely chaffed at the idea.
Subject: Re: Whitney Houston - What the hell happened?
Very true.I guess Whitney is an example of the fact the drugs are still about, the only diferrence is it's not the film companies supplying them anymore!(let's hope!)
Subject: Re: Whitney Houston - What the hell happened?
I always get the impression that celebrities think that they are above us all. I couldn't care less what they do, most of them deserve what they get.
Subject: Re: Whitney Houston - What the hell happened?
Whitney has had lots of personal problems in her marriage and with drugs which has caused her downfall. I fell bad a little bit bad for her but every person is responsible for their own actions.

Maybe everyone here can sing along with my song on what I think of Whitney:
*ahem*
"We used to love her,
now we gotta kill her...."

I say she was the beginning of the end for R & B....the Fluttering voice....Damn girl....HOLD a F*cking NOTE....she was the fist one to ruin the traditional singing of Americas National anthem....then all H*ll broke loose with Pariah Carey...remember "The Simpsons" when Bleeding Gums Murphy took over an HOUR to sing it! Give me the Chi-lites, Stylistics, Four Tops ect....for TRUE R & B. I just listen to my favorite stuff and don't let the new CRAP bother me ;)

I never liked the influence of the likes of Aretha Franklin on R & B. Too much screaming.
Whitney Houston, Judy Garland, Robert Downey... seems like the entertainment industry always comes up with someone who drowns in their own excesses.

That "screaming" is normally called "soul," brother.
Subject: Re: Whitney Houston - What the hell happened?
No, but that reminds me of an SCTV episode where "Mel Torme" (Rick Moranis, I believe) parodied the people who sang "alternative" versions of our National Anthem, inserting lyrics to such pop standards as "The Most Beautiful Girl in the World" (not the Charlie Rich song). Halarious in its time. :D
Getting back to the subject, Whitney's Super Bowl version was considered one of the greatest renditions of all time, but it was prerecorded and she lip-synced her own singing. Just like Kathie Lee Gifford, Backstreet Boys, and the other morons who butchered the Anthem. I like my Star Spangled Banner straight and without any exitement at all.

Thanks for the clarification, Kenny :) I guess this means it's safe for me to go into the R&B section again
