Subject: Judge to decide Shaken baby's case

For those who don't read the article: A one-year-old boy is in a coma.  His mother wants to in life support, The father wabts to keep the baby alive. The baby is in a coma because the father shook him violently, and the father is facing murder charges if the baby is taking off life support.  So do you think the baby should remain on life support? Do you buy the mothers excuse of wanting the baby to die in peace, or do you think the mother wants to kill her baby just to get revenge on the father (Before you roll your eyes, remeber people have done worse)?

Well there might be a 'revenge' motive there, but is there any point in keeping the baby alive in that state? His chances of recover are zero. He is basically dead already; he can't eat or breathe by himself and will never learn to talk, think or use any mental abilities. He is probably completely insensitive to everything: can't see, hear, feel, smell or taste and coukldn't understand any of it even if he could. And he'll be like that FOREVER. Switch off the machine, let someone who has a chance use it and put the dog who did this behind bars where someone can shake the krap out of him.

Well, I don't doubt that the mother wants the baby to "go to Heaven", I don't think she just wants to punish the father.  But, on the other hand, I also have little doubt that half the reason dad wants to keep him alive is self preservation.  Not that they didn't both love their child, but let's face it--that child is barely alive now, and when he dies, the father has an even worse fate awaiting him.
And I'm with Goreripper--the little boy hasn't got a life ahead of him where he will ever be able to do anything.  I'd say let him go in peace.  He's been comatose nearly a year--he's likely WAY beyond help now. Trust me--my mother was in a coma for 6 weeks before my father had to make the decision to turn off the machines-as hard as it was for all of us, deep down I know he did the right thing.  The doctors gave us little to no hope that she would ever wake up, or function 'normally' again.  She couldn't stay off the respirator for even a day before her breathing would stop, and she would wind right back in the ICU on machines.  It was awful, and I wouldn't wish that on anyone.  As difficult as it would be to let the child die, I still have the gut feeling that he's already gone.
And yes--throw that guy in jail, and let the prisoners there show him what it's like to be abused by someone bigger and stronger than he is.  >:(

I agree with you, I think the "miracle" the husband is praying for is that he doesn't go to prison for the rest of his life, and I was going to mention it in the first post, but it sliped my mind at the time.  if (and it is a slim if) the baby started showing signs of consiousness tomorow, my opinion would change drastically.

I think that the baby should be taken off of life support.  Again, I agree with Marci (I do that alot...it is rare that we don't, I can name one time).  What is there to gain by leaving him in a coma that he has been in for so long?  :'( :'( :'(

Don't get me started on the father.

Now I will go to a happier thread before I cry...

We just had a similar case here only the parents 'got away' with murder or manslaughter because the police couldn't prove which one of them actually shook the baby to death. It makes you sick.
