Subject: What Are You Reading Right Now?

Written By: lebeiw15 on 09/22/02 at 01:44 p.m.

What's everyone reading right now?

I am reading "The Firm" by John Grisham.  I have to take a test over it at school when I'm done with it.  Has anyone read it and seen the film?  Do you think I could get away with just watching the movie?  :D   ;)

I finished reading "Number The Stars" by Lois Lowry for the fiftith time this past week for school - yeah, I know, it's on a 4th grade level, but it still works...

I've got the books "XXX" (the movie), "The Bourne Identity" (the movie), and "The Bourne Ultimatum". I need to start reading those...although I'm not a really big fan of reading.

RC -- Have you tried this trick with Shakespeare?  Whenever I've either wanted or had to read one of his plays, I'd go to the library and get a recording of the play. They're out there, and the last time I looked, easily available.  I've always had a hard time just reading them, but reading along with a recording made them come alive.

Thanks for the suggestion Steve...but books on tape really cheese me off.

What I'd like to do is to actually see the play being performed, but that does get expensive...so instead I read the play act by act and then use sparknotes online to get stuff that I didnt' pick up on the first time.  The funny thing is that I'm doing this voluntarily (this isn't for a class or anything)...just to be familiar with a playwright who takes half a page to say "Could you tie my shoe?"   :o

They weren't books on tapes, though, RC.  They were studio recordings of big league actors doing the plays.  Reading the play itself didn't work for me... the language is too different.  I couldn't track the action.  But hearing the actors recite the lines while I read along brought it alive to me.

If you've got a decent sized library nearby, I'd bet you could get your hands on a bunch of video taped plays.  Good luck anyway you do it.  It's a noble undertaking.

I have two more of his on the shelf to take on my flight to Sydney.  I like a good airplane book that keeps me engrosed.

Clive is quite similar to Aussie author Matthew Reilly.  Real action thrillers with believable characters.  Matthew likes to throw in the odd completely unfathomable impossible to describe alien or mutant cougar just to liven things up !!!!  he also has a fantastic website !

There ain't a lot of evidence out there.  There are only a couple of accepted signatures.  A will.  No personal letters.  Listings in various registries -- birth, marriage, children.  But as of page 70 out of 500, the author isn't too speculative.  What evidence is out there, though, is discussed, uh, exhaustively.  I've just finished a twenty-page chapter on Shakespeare's father will (found in a rafter a century or two after his death) which may indicate that Shakespeare pere was a closet Catholic.
Very stimulating stuff.

As of page 150 WS is an actor and... criminy, if you took out all the paragraphs containing the words "likely", "probably", and "maybe"  this book would be about twenty-five pages long.  Everyone knows Shakespeare didn't write it anyway...

The Brethren by Bob Woodward and Scott Armstrong.  It's about the United States Supreme Court, a current history of the Court from 1969 to 1977 or so.  It's an interesting behind the scenes looks at personalities and processes.

Woodward was part of the Woodward/Bernstein Washington Post, Watergate investigative team.

I've finally finished it! Granted, once I got going it only took me a few days (and cost me a bit less sleeping time ;)). I'm so happy that shes back with Morelli - even though Rangers night was a fantastic bit! :)

That is a good point, Steve. I don't know what it is about Jane Austen and the appeal to females...every woman that has read it that I know has loved this story. 'Sense and Sensibility', 'Pride and Prejudice' I just love 'em. Maybe these stories do stimulate some part of the brain for females that males don't use or don't need? But I can tell males that if they want to find out how to get inside the complex diverse and most of the time contrary female brain to win their attention as well as affections, they should at least make an acquaintance with  Elizabeth Bennet's story. (IMO) ;)

What am I reading right now? A trilogy by Tony Hillerman. It's not actually a trilogy, it's just three books bound in a single volume. The books are pretty old, they were written in the early '70's, but as with good music and good humor, a good story never goes out of fashion.

I'll tell you who my favorite authors are:

Frederick Pohl
Orson Scott Card
Leon Uris
Philip K. Dick
Kurt Vonnegut
Anne Rice
Ayn Rand
P.J. O'Roarke
Larry Niven & Jerry Pournell
Jeff Long
Peter Lefcourt
Jean Le Carre
Dean Koonts
Stephen King
John Kessel
Gary Jennings
John Irving
James P. Hogan
Tony Hillerman
Frank Herbert
Joseph Heller
John Grisham
Robert Goddard
Robert Fulgham
Nelson DeMille
Michael Crighton
Alfred Coppel
Tom Clancy
Stephen J. Cannell
James Lee Burke
Greg Bear
Clive Barker

This list is based on my having read at least three of their books.

A People's History of the Supreme Court by Peter Irons.

I'm on page 106 and up to 1802.  It's a good guide, so far, to the creation of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.  I haven't read much Supreme Court history yet.

Most curious factoid from the book:  Delaware had flogging on the books as a form of punishment up until the 1950s.

Just finished Dead Men Do Tell Tales: The strange and fascinating cases of a forensic anthropologist by William Maples.  This is a good read for anyone who enjoys true crime stories.  A forensic anthropologist is the person who investigates less-than-fresh crime scenes, for the most part.  Not only does Maples relate a few juicy crimes, he also has acted in his capacity for the government in identifying the recovered  remains of armed forces personnel.  And he's been on the teams investigating the death of President Zachary Taylor (indigestion or poisoning?) and the royal remains of the Romanovs of Russia.

Just started Theodore Rex, by Edmund Morris.  This is the second volume in Morris's life of Theodore Roosevelt (the first, The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt, won the Pulitzer and American Book Award).  It's a lively narrative up to page 37...

Porno, by Irvine Welsh. It's a sequel to Trainspotting, which was made into a successful British film back in 1996. It picks up the character's lives ten years down the line, and so far so good.

Forbidden Knowledge: From Prometheus to Pornography by Roger Shattuck.
The sub-title left out Pandora, Adam and Eve (especially Eve), the Tower of Babel, Dante, et alia.  Haven't gotten to the long Frankenstein or Marquis de Sade chapter yet, but this already is an interesting read.  It seems to be a biography of the lure and danger of knowledge.

Speaking of biographies, if anyone is interested in a very, very good biography, get Theodore Rex, it is a highly readable, intelligent and complete biography of one of America's most interesting Presidents, Theodore Roosevelt.

I finished reading the entire Bible, but I got lazy reading it again.  I don't want to go back to Leviticus and Deuteronomy.  Heck, I never know if I really did skip their chapters or not! But okay, I know they're all important.  But believe me, reading the Bible can be as rigorous as a diet plan.  You know what to do but you need discipline because the process is difficult; but you know both will be very fulfilling.

So far, I just finished reading "Boy Meets Girl" a sequel of "I Kissed Dating Goodbye" by Joshua Harris.  Not just a book on "premarital sex is bad" but also on courtship, on self-acceptance, on growing up.  These leads ultimately to love of God, yourself, and your future mate. I also recommend reading "The Peter Pan Syndrome" by Dr. Dan Kiley afterwards.  He uses more models and concepts of course, but they're very helpful in growing to maturity.

For fun, please do read any books of Father Brown by Gilbert K. Chesterton.

It Looks Like a President, Only Smaller: Trailing campaign 2000 by Washington Post humor columnist Joel Achenbach.
I love the deep discount books at Half-Price Books.  Got this for $1 and started and finished it in a sitting and a half.  The humor isn't too heavy handed, and both Gore and Bush are flayed equally.  It's an edited version of Achenbach's The Rough Draft column in the Washington Post.  I've never heard of him before, but assuming I could find the same type bargain, I'd read another by him.

I've also just started ' the Amazing Maurice and his Educated Rodents' by Terry Pratchett.  This is his first discworld book for children.  Having read all the others that re out in paperback I thought I'd give this one a whirl.  (DH bought it me for CHristmas, what a love!)

I was surprised that no one else mentioned Pratchett at all.  I thought the humour would be just up most posters street.  ;D

Fishing In the Tiber by Lance Morrow.
It's a collection of essays the author wrote for Time magazine from the mid-70s to the mid-80s.  Another Half-Price discount book.
The essays are a little dated, and they're more topical than philosophical.  For instance, who remembers "The Shoes of Imelda Marcos"?  Or "The Shuttle"?  Or "The Falklands"?  Still, it's fun to retrace where we've been and what was important back when.

Who Will Tell the People: The betrayal of American democracy by William Greider.
Hmm.  Let's see.  It's Dewey Decimal number is 323., so it's Social Science -- Political Science -- Civil and Political Rights.
Published in '92 (it's hard to stay current when shopping HalfPrice's deep discount section) and promises to explain "the failure of American politics and the faltering of the democratic process itself."
Greider was an investigative reporter for Rolling Stone magazine.
