Subject: Do you think there should still be murderabilia?

Written By: Rich Steele on 09/16/02 at 11:43 p.m.

I don't think they should have anymore notoriety, take it away from the murderers, and the other criminals. Who profit off of stuff they either make or they profit off of things from the crime scene, or even some of their own body parts, like hair follicles. It horrendous. It sickens me. The victims are revictimized.

I agree...it is disgusting that the murders profit from anything.  I think that if there has to be this stuff, then the victims families should profit.  Especially when the killer writes a book about the whole thing.

In the UK, this isnt allowed, people convicted of a criminal offence cannot profit from it.

This is true, but he's no longer in prison. It only applies while they are behind bars.

I have a feeling its a state by state thing in Aus.

The Birnies over here have never been allowed to be paid by a paper or to write a book.  But my cousin is a prison guard in NSW and he says Ivan Milat is writing a book and so is the Granny Killer - whose name I have forgotten.

I wonder what Milat's book will say. Probably that he's innocent. Unlike most of the other mass killers who have been convicted, he still claims he's innocent.
I'm not surprised that John Wayne Glover (the Granny Killer) is writing a book as he's something of a megalomaniac. I'm not quite sure what will happen to the royalties from the books however. Both Milat and Glover are 'never to be released', so I'm assuming any money they make from anything they do in prison will be held in trust for the families of the victims.

Didnt Chopper write his first two books while still in prison ??

Thanks for reminding me of the Granny Killers name Gore - I was having a total mental blank there even tho I could picture his bug ugly face. !!

Of course Milat is innocent (read sarcasm there !!).  The fact that even now they are still finding further evidence of his crimes going back to the 60s make him even more innocent !  My cousin says there is only one inmate in the entire goal who is mates with him - everyone else hates him.  And now the little Sydney rapist git has been transfered down to the same place.

I have studied serial killers for so many years and own hundreds of books from all over the world on the subject - even books from the 17th and 18th centuries.  But as a moral stand I would never ever purchase a book written by the murderer themselves that they would profit from personally.

Freakily - I buy a hot chocolate every morning on my way to work from a girl who was the one and only survivor of the Birnies.  The one who escaped them and got the police to them.  I shudder when I think of the torturous ordeal she went thru with that evil couple.

Yes he did, and I'm not sure of the arrangements regarding the royalties during the time he was inside. But now he's free, he can make money however he likes. As long as it's legal, of course.  ;D
