Subject: the morissette minors
what does everyone think of the new lot of female singer/songwriters such as Avril Lavigne, Vanessa Carlton, Norah Jones and Michelle Branch ???
...and how do they compare with the "old-skool" females such as Alanis Morissette, Tori Amos, Lisa Loeb, Joni Mitchell, Tracey Chapman etc ?
Subject: Re: the morissette minors
Contrary to what I would have believed before, I am actually really getting into these new female techno/piano pop female music stars. I certainly didn't think I would be.

Couldn't have said it better.
I think, overall, these teens will compare with the likes of Alanis Morrisette (maybe), Tori Amos (maybe), Lisa Loeb, etc., eventualy if not now.
Subject: Re: the morissette minors
My opinion is they do not even compare with the real Morissettes of the 80s and 90s. Even Tori Amos, who isn't one of my faves, could outsing these wannabees. But I probably depends on the type of listener.

As I said before, I like this new crop of female musicians. If Alanis is the guide were using, I think there definately better than her, IMHO.

thank you for your opinions

I'm interested to know what your opinion is of them, too, and your comparison of the Nu-Skool to the Old-Skool artists you mention... I'm merely interested in your view.

rite.
well, my reference to "old-skool" was simply because i could not think of another term to describe ppl like Alanis, joni etc.
personally, i think the comparison and the label that they have been given as "the morissette minors" is ridiculous. firstly, none of them really sound like Alanis, there are comparisons between Avril and Morissette in particular tracks on her album, for me i see them through "Losing Grip" and "Unwanted."
but Vanessa Carlton, another of the Morissette minors, i see more of a comparison to Tori Amos. and that only exists through the reminscent similar piano sounds.
i view each one as a seperate talent and respect each of them for that.

Early 90s artists oldies? That's very soon! But I respect your opinion, a lot of people remember the last few years of the decade only for its spiral into "mediocrity" (not my words, my sister's).

Considering that I'm not even a fan of Alanis Morissette or Tori Amos, I don't think very much of these new girls.
I do appreciate a pretty piano intro, though, so I'm willing to cut Vanessa Carlton a break. They all need to work on the lyrics though, I'm not big on suburban poetry.

as i said.
just a term
Subject: Re: the morissette minors
I think they are on their way to promising careers. Music writers seem to have a better shot that people who have their music written for them. They have the upper hand i suppose (being self sufficient).

I don't see how you can compare Norah Jones to any the old school singer-songwriters. She has a style of her own I think even though I don't care for her music. Vanessa Carlton has promise and she said next album will be dirtier as she says. Avril Lavigne I think came out too soon. Should could be like a Martika-kype. I don't see any promise in Michelle Branch even though she has natrually beautiful looks(I'm a sucker for brunettes.) As far as the old school singer-songwriters are concerned I liked and still like Lisa Loeb's music.

I think they're a load of crap, but Alanis and co were, so no change there then ;)
Any other Madder Rose/Saint Low fans out there?

Another thing we have to keep in mind is that Alanis was dogged on and dubbed the "man hater" when she first came out. She was revered when we heard how versitile she actually is. So i think we'd have to wait a few years before we can compare the "minors" to the major. The point is, this is their first album and we really don't have a full taste of what these girls can do.
