Subject: Flicked Butts Still Piling Up
Divide, CO-AP: Despite the drought and Extreme fire danger, cigarette butts still are being flicked out the windows of cars on Old Stage Road.
Neighbor Paul Cohen, however; reports fewer butts than before.
Readers of the column pointed out the butts--in addition to the obvious fire threat--are an environmental nightmare.
A visit to to www. cigarettelitter.org revealed the impact of butts on the envronment.
--Flicked butts are NOT bio-degradable because they contain plastic fibers.
--Wind and rain often carry flicked butts into rivers and lakes where toxic chemicals trapped by the cigarette filter leak, threatening the water supply and wildlife.
--Butts have been found in the stomachs of fish, and birds, which mistake them for food.
I have personally been to where the Haymen fire was and it was horrid to see the piles of cigarette butts we gathered from the freshly burned forest! Are some smokers idiots...yes. Use the Ashtray or at least have the decency to get rid of them responsibly.

This makes me so angry. I just want to scream at people who flick their butts out of the window. It is downright dangerous. >:(

Im glad to see that there are others that Get angry about this.
I think you guys my enjoy this story,
about 15 years ago while waiting at a stop light, the driver of the car(a mustang) in front of me flicked his butt out the window. and just as quick as it happened my friend who was sitting in the car with me jumped out and ran up and picked up the butt and turned to the guy in the car and said "I think you droped this." and then flicked the butt into the backseat of the guys car. and ran back to our car.
Luckly the guy was more worried about the lit butt in his car than he was about chasing us down.
I hope you enjoyed this as much as we did.

I remember a very funny Tex Avery cartoon about a forest fire started by someone flicking a butt out the window and the forest fire tormented the firefighters. Here in West Virginia, because we haven't been getting much rain lately, the fall forest fire season has begun ahead of schedule. And a lot of these fires can be contributed to arson… >:(

Every time I have a yard sale, I end up picking up a dozen cigarette butts from my driveway! >:(

Yeah flicked butts annoy me too. Both myself and my (recently ex-) girlfriend are smokers, but we always use the ashtray in the car; when we're not in the car, we both make an effort to find a rubbish bin or, if we're not near a bin, we'll butt out and put them in an empty matchbox until we can find one. I know I shouldn't smoke at all, but at least I'm making an effort. :)

I have a long string of cigarette butts, not to mention other trash the neighbors and others dump in our yard. The garbagemen must think we are human chimneys. ::)

I am sure the reason there are more flicked butt is that car manufacturers have decided to take it upon themselves to be judge and jury on whether we should smoke of not. Almost all vehicles come now without lighters or ashtrays....and if you do request what used to be normal standard items...it can cost you anywhere from 250-500 extra dollars!! (if you can even get them at all)

That sucks. I don't smoke, but my ashtray accumulates all the change I am too lazy to put in my purse. Where am I supposed to put my "Oh my gosh I need a dollar" dollar? Don't they think of the little people......

I one time saw a kid light up a smoke and sitting where I wanted to head out the back door.right on the steps of my bus that I take almost every day.I should've said something! >:( -howard-
