Subject: Songs That Have Changed Your Life
This can be quite broad - from changing your musical interests, or changing how you viewed a certain issue. Some people have had life altering moments after hearing certain songs.
The moment I heard 'Boy With The Thorn In His Side', I instantly fell in love with The Smiths. I had to go and download every single song they had ever recorded. Now, I hardly listen to that track, but it will always remain as the song that introduced me to a band that I now can proudly name as my best. And this is something that I've never been able to do before - as I have always claimed that there is no 'best' band ever as it is all a matter of opion. It just so happens that in my opinion, The Smiths are fantastic :)
So has anyone else got a certain song which changed something in their lives, however minor, like me and my musical tastes!
Btw - I know I always tend to go for music based threads :)

I distinctly remember being "turned on" to Pink Floyd. I was fifteen years old and my tastes in music up until that point consisted of Motley Crue, Quiet Riot, Poison, etc. My "much older" boyfriend (he was 19) lent me his cassettes of The Wall and Wish You Were Here. Man, it was a total revelation to me that music could be so...well...so deep! Although I still crank up the stereo whenever I hear "Unskinny Bop", I must say that Pink Floyd is my all-time favorite band and I am forever grateful to "Jud" for his musical influence.

the first time i heard 'hey jupiter' by tori amos, i was so hooked that she has surpassed elton john in the number of cds category. it was actually the second tori song i heard, but it was the one that made the impact. so i swiped my sister's then-fiance's (now ex) tori tapes and such and listened to everything he had. i'd had music speak to me (the smiths...reel around the fountain for example), but i'd never had so many songs from the same artist speak so much to me on so many levels. it really helped me define my musical taste...i tend to go toward that which i can find my own meaning to or can find some relation in my own life to the lyrics as they are intended. i like multi-faceted and/or meaninful stuff. don't get me wrong...i do like 'fluff' that is just for entertainment. you have to have both, i think, to really be able to appreciate the full value of music. that's just my opinion, though.

I suppose the two that changed my music tastes forever were "Run to the hills" by Maiden and "Gates of Babylon" by Rainbow - before then, I was a bit teenybopper; afterwards, music was never quite the same again :-)

In the spring of '92 my cousin sent me a tape of "current" dance tunes (he lived in Chicago). The first two tracks were Outlander's "Vamp" and Andromeda's "Gaza"; they were of poor sound quality and really did nothing for me. the third track was Frank DeWuulf's mix of Human Resource's "Dominator." That hoover sound kicked in and turned my head...thus I discovered techno as the new dance sound of the time...the music was just so energized and uplifting. The Edge 94.5 FM's (Dallas) "Edgeclub 94" mixshow also migrated to the scene with Jeff K spinning crazy-a$$ breakbeats and "blip" music (I was also pleased to witness his mixshow on Groove Radio in LA in April '97 around midnight where he did a "flashback to '92" set). I spent a lot of ca$h that summer acquiring singles by virtually faceless artists such as The Prodigy, SL2, Praga Khan, 4 Hero, Altern8, etc..
Granted, a lot of folks don't like techno (I don't like a lot of the current stuff out; I do like some of the house music tho') but for me it changed my view/interests on the dance scene and along with that I acquired some new spinning techniques. :)

"Mother, I miss you" by Jim Brickman and Dahlia.
I cannot even LISTEN to it without bawling. Really made me look at my relationship with my mother.

Even though "Methods Of Dance" is Japan's best song, the song Ghosts carries a lot more meaning to me than the rest of their opus and is what sold me into their unique style of music and vocals.

I think the 2 songs that have influenced me the most were NIN's "Hurt", and Aaliyah's "Try Again" A couple 2 PAC songs like "Changes" and "Until The End of Time". Others that deserve a mention: Anastacia's "Who's Gonna Stop The Rain", Stabbing Westward's "Save Yourself" and Depeche Mode's "Only When I Lose Myself".

Me too! Actually, once I started listening to the lyrics (instead of inventing my own) ;D, I was blown away. I also love Ramble On!
