Subject: Kids Out Of Shape
When I was in school we had the "President's Council on Physical Fitness". If you passed, you got a nifty little patch to sew on your letter jacket. Apparently, our government thinks we need a BILL to allocate even MORE money on physical fitness and nutritian education because the kids of today are too damn fat.
Here are some things to try:
Spend more time with them....communiacte!
Feed your kids something besides fast food.
Get them involved in learning to cook with you. (My boys love this!)
Turn your kids on to flavorless, carbonation-free sodas. Some people call it "water".
Any comments?

Everyone thinks sodas bad for you, it's not, diet soda's even better, and carbonation has nothing to do with wieght loss. Fast food is very bad for you. I was a thin kid and I hardly ever got to eat fast food, and I was always outside. I Guess parents today are to lazy to feed thier kids properly, and playstation is a bigger lure than the outdoors. Although the goverments standards of what a normal wieght is have gotten lower and lower every year, and kids have gotten fatter? Kind of Ironic.

My brother is a dentist so he should know a thing or two about all the sugar in soda, that can rot your teeth. I also heard that diet soda is just as bad, with all the salt added to replace the sugar. I know that carbonation also makes you go to the bathroom more, so you lose a lot of fluid, hence de-hydration. So it's just my opinion ;), but advertisers are lying when they say soda's quench your thirst....it actually does the opposite because your body loses fluid. It's a great scam though....I just tell my kids what I think and they can decide for themselves as can everyone else. :)

But since this was a "fat" discussion, that has nothing to do w/it! That's another issue.
As far as being "too fat" (which I largely think is baloney - or balogna, or whatever), I think the worst problem is kids having everything handed to them for entertainment. My 1 nephew is the extreme case of this. Slug. That's what I call him. His whole life is screens - movie theater to TV to computer back to TV game. It's absolutely ridiculous. Everything else is "boring". (Truth is, HE is boring.) He does nothing for himself essentially, does not venture out in the world to see what might be fun. Been raised too much to count on screens. So yes, he was quite overweight. I fear alot of kids are partially like that. Too much sit-on-your-butt screen time.
But still, I'd rather we be too "overweight" than underweight. When we're all thin and wan, I'll be worried.

I think its terrible. When I was growing up I never had a TV in my room I was lucky I had a radio. And we didn’t have a remote for our family television. I was never inside. I was always doing something like cheerleading, dance, girl scouts… These kids need fresh air…the parents need to take them outside. Some of the parents need to get outside themselves..
check this out...Throwaway cellphones are set to make their debut on U.S. convenience store shelves, down the aisle from plastic razors, beef jerky and disposable cameras they seek to emulate as spur-of-the-moment consumer purchases.

Right. BUT, the shape that their hearts are in is a problem.

I think kids being overweight has to do with the parents not cooking and instead taking them to McDonald's. Yes, the video games and computer stuff also has lots to do with it. When I was a kid I did watch TV alot but me and other kids around the street rode are bikes and played different games. Today kids just rather play video games.

I'd say I'm lucky with my children: I have one who only drinks water, irrespective of what else is on offer; another who spends hours kicking a football around (though since he's just bought himself two football games for the gameboy, he kicks a pixellated one around, too); all of them love to cook (which drives my wife to distraction when it comes to clearing up)... they get carbonated drinks on special occasions only (and Coke once in a blue moon), drinking mainly OJ...
They hardly ever get fast food: McDonalds is a maybe-twice-a-year treat (for them, pain in the stomach for me)... reminds me of the nutritionist, who when asked how often a growing child should be allowed to eat McDonalds burgers replied "once"... "Once per week? Once per month?" asked the interviewer. "No, just once" came the reply. (or was that just wishful thinking?)
