Subject: Looks like Pakistan can give out a fair punishment

The person responsible for the kidnapping and murder of Danny pearl was sentenced to death by a pakistan court. wish we weren't scared to punish our criminals in the same way.

Amen to that, Screwball54. Though, I wonder a couple of things. Why is a life sentence in Pakistan only 25 years, and I thought the Middle East used Stoning as a method of execution, as was introduced by King Hammurabi, I believe. Lethel Injection does seem way to humane. If an American did what these people did to Daniel Pearl in Pakistan, or some other country, they would recieve the same exact kind of execution that Omar Saeed is getting. Hopefully his execution won't be stalled for too long.

Exactly, perhaps that's it!
Indeed, 1 of the main definitions of "cruel and unusual punishment" as I understand, was keeping people in gaol too long rather than executing them! If you had a taste of old-time prison (not to mention true immediate "speedy trial" and execution), you might not ever tinker w/the idea of crime and this would all be moot! :-/

Speaking of Pakistan's fine justice system, a Pakistani court recently sentenced a man to death on a charge of blasphemy after he claimed to be Jesus Christ and Islam to be a false religion. According to the report a non-Muslim can be thus prosecuted on the sole accusation of a single Muslim.
That's downright chilling.

Don't get me started about Pakistan. If they hadn't been so keen to appease the US about this issue, it could have taken them years to so much as find the guilty party. This is a country where the local police deliberately failed to investigate the gang rape of an 18 year old woman because they were worried about reprisals from the district tribal council, who had apparently ordained the crime as a punishment for the victim's younger brother's adultery with a married woman. If the Justice Dept. had not stepped in, this abuse of human rights would have gone unpunished.
