Subject: All-Star Game Tied

Written By: Indy Gent on 07/10/02 at 10:33 a.m.

Well it's time for baseball fans to kiss their sisters. The 2002 All-Star game ended in a 7-7 tie due to a lack of pitchers in the 11th inning. This is yet another slap in the face that former Brewers owner turned self-appointed commissioner Bud Selig has dealt the ticketholders since he took "control"  ::)
It's probably mean another players' strike and another post-season gone down the tubes. No contrition of teams can stop the bleeding of this sport that Bud (Un)Wiser has started since 1993.

Last night was a perfect example of mismanagment of the game, by Joe Torre and Bruce Bochy. There is no need to play everyone, and the managers should have held some people in reserve just in case the game went into extra innings. I know extra inning All-Star games are rare, but you should still plan for the possibility.

The part that really gets me is that they renamed the All-Star MVP trophy after Ted Williams....and no one gets it! :-X

After last nights debacle in Milwaukee, I fear the Strike may once again rear it's greedy little head....to think of all those players possibly quoting Patrick Ewing of the Knicks during the nba strike a while back "How am I supposed to feed my children?!", makes my skin crawl.  That is a HUGE reason why I gave up on the brown ball league years ago....after all we only have the lowly Nuggets here...I will still watch, just not care as much.  I loved watching baseball...from Dante Bichettes home run in the botton of the 14th of 1995's Coors Field home opener to the wonderful feeling seeing Arizona beat the high-priced yankees last year, but now if they go on strike again...I just don't know if I'll be back to watch as much :(  If only the fans would just stop going to the games for a while, then the owners would lose money and not be ABLE to pay the ridiculous high prices for these guys playing a Game. Once years ago during the '87 NFL strike, the Broncos had a running back named Joe Dudeck..he was thrilled just to be out there playing and having fun....sure the money was nice but he realized his dream to play (Albiet some called these guys scabs) and it was so very refreshing to hear someone talk of his utter enjoyemnt at being fortunate enough to play at all!

One thing is for sure... I am just now beginning to watch baseball again after the '95 strike - largely because of my son's interest - but if they strike again I can't see myself ever caring enough to watch another game. I'll still pay attention to the stats and follow the races, but that's it.

I believe Baseball's problems go deeper than what happened last night.  But what Last night showed was the disconect between the people who are in charge of baseball, the players and the fans.  The fans that were in the stadium payed $125 a seat to see the game, many people watching on fox stayed up late to see the outcome of the game.  For them to just end it as a tie after the eleventh inning is really inconsiderate.  I don't buy the crap from the players, that they were going to hurt thier prescous $10million arms if they continued the game.  Baseball games go into extra Innings all the time.  Besides why couldn't they get some one who isn't a piture out thier to pitch? It's just for fun.  The management could have prior planned and invited a couple more pitchers to the all star game.   >:(

I believe the NL skipper was Bob Brenley, since he was the manager for the Diamondbacks team that won the World Series last year.

I agree, that really did stink, dagwood!

I was a bit bummed about it all too, but I never have cared a great deal for the all-star game anyway.  I mean I watch it, but to me, it's not a real big deal.
I didn't totally understand why they called it when they did.  I know Garcia, at least, could have gone for another inning or two if he needed to!  I understand that maybe it "wouldn't have been fair" or something, but they could have kept him in.  What hubby explained to me was that Torre just didn't want to run the risk of injuring any players, aside from his own, (if he'd had to) and that perhaps if he'd used a pitcher/player from a team the Yanks would be facing soon, that he could've been considered to blame for "wearing them out".  I think that's pretty much a bunch of BS, if that was the reason myself, but who knows.  ::)

Same anywhere unfortunately. In Australia we have what is known as Rugby Leagues "State Of Origin". Queensland v New South Wales, best of the best, (in aussie anyway) and twice it ends up 1 win apiece and a draw. The winner - the team who won the year before. The loser - the crowds/ the teams.
