Subject: Re: Whatever happened to good TV?
To put not too fine a point on it TV, it's stuffed !
And, before posting, having seen waht Jessica said, all I can say is : What Jessica said !
As for the reality shows, if that's their reality, I'm glad I'm not a part of it - I used to think mine was bad but 5 minutes of a reality show and I think I'm just fine, thank you !
They try to tell us what we watch is controlled by the ratings - It's an old beef but there it is again :
Who are these people who participate in the ratings ? No-one I know has ever met one...
I suggest they need a different demographic for their ratings filler-outerer's, because it's hard to find anyone who agrees with the shows that are 'supposedly' popular.....

Subject: Re: Whatever happened to good TV?
There is a few good shows still on the air. I like Drew Carey, Ed, and Law and Order (all four of them). As for the reality shows, some of them I like and others I hate. I Like Survivor, amazing race, and the mole, I hate Big Brother, Real World, Eco Chalenge, and Road rules. The first three is kind of like watching an interesting game show, IMHO.
Subject: Re: Whatever happened to good TV?
IMHO all TV is bad TV. With the exception of a couple of English comedies and the stuff on PBS and the History Channel, when the latter is not being repetitive, which it usually is. Okay, I will concede that Law and Order is pretty good. And King of the Hill. And Queer as Folk. Allright then, I'll amend my original statement: most TV is bad TV.... ::)

Subject: Re: Whatever happened to good TV?
Yeah Law & Order is good. They were so many good shows in the 80's/early 90's period now there is not as many good shows. I find myself watching TNN where the show re-runs of old shows from 80's/early 90's period. In my opinion the NBC HIt "Friends" stayed on the air too long. It should have ended a few years ago in my opinion. I don't how anybody can watch reality shows. There is so many that its overexposed.

Man I hate friends, The Stupid Jokes, the fact that the stars of the show get $1M a episode for next season, the gay wedding episode, and its on four times a day. :P
Subject: Re: Whatever happened to good TV?
Friends isn't for everyone's taste. But it's still better than a lot of rubbish that passes for entertainment on TV. When it goes off the air next year, that'll probably be the last time I what first-run TV. I definitely won't watch "Will & Grace". :(

I've only seen "Will and Grace" once, but once was enough for me, I will never watch it again. Thursday is definately NBC's worst night. I think NBC's only decent shows are Law and Order, scrubs, and Ed. I hate West Wing, ER, Dateline, and MSNBC.
Subject: Re: Whatever happened to good TV?
Um, I watch re-runs only. Nothing new has piqued my interest, really (there are some exceptions...). Law And Order used to be good, but once they sacked Chris Noth and threw in Benjamin Bratt, I stopped watching it altogether (the old episodes were sooooo much better). Reality shows are 100% unadulterated crap; same for sit-coms >:(

I used to watch ER. Than they killed Kelly Martin's character and the show just went south a little bit. The way they killed off Anithony Edwards was kind of bizzare. I remeber when the charcters all used to get along. Now its like thety are bitter at each other or something. I haven't watched current TV shows in a while. Looks like I am not really missing anything.

"ER" is a great example to what happens when the money grubbing producers and networks "milk" a show for all it's worth, "wring it" and stretch it out as long as it will go, to the point of self destruction. IMO, the show's no longer worth didly. The series is unbearable to watch anymore.
IMO, when they began losing their original cast members, that's when the show went downhill.
Good TV is hard to come by these days. PBS, The History Channel, The Discovery Channel and the few other channels which involve intelligent conversation and education are what I consider the only good kind of TV anymore.

15 years ago,TV shows were watchable.
-Cosby Show
-Full House
-Family Ties
now there's nothing much on compared to 1987.

I just watch re-runs and stuff on Nick-at-Nite. Really nothing else on TV that interests me too much. Now, if I could get V-H1 Classic and MTV2..

I still like Law and Order, but I rarely get to watch it these days. TV is rubbish. The only thing it's good for now is for playing my video collection. ;D
Subject: Re: Whatever happened to good TV?
I like the really old classics like Mr. Ed, Leave it to beaver, I love Lucy, All in the family, Three's company, Cosby Show and some news shows like The O'Reilly Factor, Hannity and Colmes. and On the Record.

I liked "The New Leave it to Beaver" series that they ran several years ago. It was cool seeing Eddie Haskell and the guys all grown up. 8)
I think there is a new "Beaver" series (or maybe a movie) in the works now.

I would like to know what happened to Saturday morning TV. ???
Thinking back to when I was a kid...loooong before I experienced cable/satellite TV, I remember looking forward to Saturday mornings to get up at 8am and watch cartoons until noon. Now as an adult(and yes I still like some cartoons :)), I wonder what the heck happened to Saturday morning TV?

Agree.
NBC '90's= teen shows like "Saved By The Bell"
Present: Junk from the "Discovery Kids" network.
CBS Now= Junk from Nickelodeon.
ABC Since 1998= Junk from Disney Channel. :P
Rather watch paint dry than another episode of "Lizzie McGuire".
Subject: Re: Whatever happened to good TV?
Well, somebody is watching this crap, or they wouldn't show it. Too many trailer trash enjoying watching others get low-balled or idiots on display. :P
I can count the number of shows I watch regularly on my right hand:
1. CSI
2. NOVA
3. Bugs Bunny Road Runner Show
4. "Family Guy" reruns.
Plus a smattering (<- word of the day) of shows on the Discovery Channel, and History Channel. And the odd slasher flick on TBS. And when I mean slasher, I mean a movie hacked so bad, it shouldn't even have been shown. :(
Subject: Re: Whatever happened to good TV?
Yeah TV shows are not as good, because they have ran out of ideas, because everything has been done. There are some great shows out there:
King of Queens
George Lopez
and the hilarious Chappel's show
That's all...I just usually watch sportscenter, and CHAPPELE
But I love watching reruns of THE FRESH PRINCE AND SEINFELD...CLASSICS BABY
Subject: Re: Whatever happened to good TV?
There are some good shows:
George Lopez
My Wife & Kids
That 70s Show
Whos Line Is It Anyway
The King Of Queens
These all have good writting and cast chemistry

I enjoy watching "Whose Line"; I'm amazed by some of the things those guys do on that show. :)
Subject: Re: Whatever happened to good TV?
Whose Line is definitely a good one...I enjoy the episodes that are on ABC with Drew Carey, but I've also seen alot of the older episodes that were from Britain. Hysterical!!!! :D
Subject: Re: Whatever happened to good TV?
I like Mondays:7th Heaven, Everwood
Tuesdays:Gilmore Girls, One Tree Hill, and Judging Amy
Wednesdays: Corner Gas (or that 70's show), and Wild Card
Thursdays: Friends, Will and Grace, Survivor, CSI
Fridays:JAG,(or Boston Public), Reba, What I like about You
Saturdays: Sue Thomas, FBeye
Sundays:American Dreams
I would love for some new "classics" to come along, fill out what we have, considering the shows are all 1/2-1 hour long, some nights r pretty empty if you dislike reality T.V (I like Survivor, but no other reality t.v)
Subject: Re: Whatever happened to good TV?
I'm not sure whatever happened to good TV, but I'm glad to have found at least a couple of shows that get me through when I have time to chill -
Tru Calling & Wonder Falls (both on FOX)
Subject: Re: Whatever happened to good TV?
IMHO, I can't imagine these reality shows really being anyone's reality! I like Law & Order, and I watch VH1 Classic alot, and Behind the Music on VH1 when there's an artist or group I really like that's being featured.
Subject: Re: Whatever happened to good TV?
Part of the reason reality TV has become so popular with the networks is that they are dirt cheap to produce. Take Friends, for example, each actor was getting, what, $1000000 an episode, there are 13 episodes per season, give or take, that's $13million PER actor. Not to mention the actual production/promotion costs. Now take a reality show where the "prize" is $1000000. Assume the production/promotion costs are the same for both shows. The networks are making a killing on reality shows ::)

18 years including the segments on "The Tracy Ullman Show".
Subject: Re: Whatever happened to good TV?
I discovered "Law & Order" late. I've watched just about all the reruns.
"The Simpsons" phenomenon has reached the end of its useful lifespan. As long as they retain good writers, the can still make funny episodes, but the problem is it suffers under the weight of its longevity. Funny or not, it is played out and tired.
I discovered "Family Guy" last fall. It's in reruns on the Cartoon Network. This show is predictable, formulaic crap, but I still find it funny enough to watch as many episodes as I can.
"South Park" is hit or miss. The characters would be better off as 16 year olds than 8 years for the plots. Some episodes border on genius, some are unbelievably lame.
My two favorite cartoon shows (other than "The Simpsons") of the past fifteen years are "Ren & Stimpy" and "Duckman."
I used to watch a lot of the forensic programs with the gory re-enactments, but I finally got sick of 'em.
These days, I watch C-Span a lot. "Washington Journal" in the morning, weekend "Book TV," if they've got an interesting author.
In the evenings I watch a lot of cable news shout shows, "The O'Reilly Factor," "Hardball," "Hannity & Colmes," "Dennis Miller," though they may be bad for my mental health. If the people on my side of the political fence had their own "beat up on the Right" network, I'd watch that, but they don't.
Al Franken & Co. have started "Air America" radio, the "liberal" response to Rush and such, but it's got a snowball's chance in H.E. double toothpicks!
;D
