Subject: St. Louis Cardinals Pitcher Darryl Kile Is Dead

Written By: Indy Gent on 06/22/02 at 05:00 p.m.

Some shocking news from the world of sports. Darryl Kile, an All-Star pitcher with the St. Louis Cardinals, was found dead in his hotel room today, apparently from natural causes. He was only 33. He probably had his best years with the Houston Astros, where he won 20 games two years in a row. For those who followed his career, he will be missed. :'(

I just heard the news two, the question Is: How do you die at age 33 of natural causes? makes me wonder...

It happens rarely, but it does happen. Sergei Grinkov, the husband and figure skating partner of Ekaterina Gordeeva, died of a heart attack (at 29). And Reggie Lewis of the Celtics died of heart arrythmia (although he was thought to have taken drugs). It also happen to Indiana high school basketball player John Stewart, a University of Kentucky recruit; he was barely 18. Still sad to see at any age. :'(

From the article I read, they don't know why he died.  They will probably do the autopsy tomorrow.  It does happen, though.  We just had a 17 or 18 year old kid die this week.  5 weeks ago he collapsed while running laps at school...he lapsed into a coma and never woke up.   :'(

This should shut the mouths of some idiots I know who said he probably died from drugs >:(

Kile was found dead Saturday in his 11th-floor hotel room at the Westin Hotel after he failed to show up for St. Louis's game at Wrigley Field. The night before, he had gone to dinner with his brother, Daniel.

Donoghue said Daniel Kile told him Darryl Kile said his shoulder was hurting and that he felt weak.

''For a guy who was a pitcher in the major leagues, was an unusual symptom,'' Donoghue said.

The medical examiner said he also suspected heart problems after he learned that Kile's father died after suffering a heart attack in his mid-40s. ''It pointed us in the right direction,'' he said.

The right coronary artery and the left interior descending artery were blocked by 80-90 percent, Donoghue said. Such blockages occur when fatty deposits accumulate inside the arteries.

In addition, Kile's heart weighed 552 grams. ''For his weight, a normal heart would have been 450 grams,'' Donoghue said.

The autopsy revealed no damage to the heart, leading Donoghue to believe arrhythmia, or an erratic heartbeat, was the cause of death.
