Subject: Who's Watching The World Cup?

Written By: Criz on 06/02/02 at 07:26 a.m.

I get so into international matches! I rarely watch any of the Premiership matches, but there's something about the hype and pressure from these types of events that draws me in. I was addicted to France 98 and Euro 2000.

Been watching the England game this monring - can't believe we drew :( So, who are we all supporting and any bets on who will get into the next round? :)

Probably nobody in America unless they're watching it en español or if the Americans are involved; and even so, nobody really cares here.  Americans don't care about what we call soccer.  The last time, the Yanks finished dead last.  Americans are getting better at it but most Americans just don't care…

I'm definitly watching. Come on England and ireland for me ma The canadian staying at my house isn't really bothered about it, they just hope America don't get anywhere, which I guess is fair.
I can't help but watch with all these males in my house, they are all obsessed.  Is anyone worried about Beckhams hair though?  I just sat there hoping he wouldn't have to do a header, not for fear of messing his hair up, but for fear of him popping the ball.
I'm disappointed in the draw, and if Sven isn't fixing it, then frankly, boys, you can do better!!!

Not many are following it here. It's like the Olympics: there wasn't that much interest to begin with and the hours that the networks decide to air the matches are ungodly. It shouldn't come to a surprise to anyone outside of the USA, though. This is a country in where a 300lbs linebacker wall of lard counts as an "athlete" (yeh, chocolate athlete, that is ;) )

Well okay Criz

I'm watching it - every match so far, and dozens to go.

Given my background, I'm mainly interested in England and Ireland's performances.

Being a Leeds supporter I have extra interest because there are 8 Leeds players scatterd throughout different countries in the cup.  Having said that, sorry about Danny Mills gifting Sweden their goal.  I've told O'Leary to give him a pay cut !

But why England chose to go to sleep after such a good first half confounds me.  Just like Ireland in reverse.

I think it is hard to go past Italy and France (despite France not playing in EITHER half against Senegal).

One last thought though.  I note Tarzan Boy's comments regarding the times the matches are being screened.

As an Australian, for once in my life (Sydney Olympics notwithstanding for obvious reasons) I can watch a major sporting event without having to get up at three in the morning to do so.

I know Tarzan Boy's comments were probably directed at the TV networks, but look at things frommy perspective.  Those of you who do watch these things regularly should count your bleesings in regard to the telecast times.  I'd swap with you any day !

Same with my dad - he's getting up at 6am to watch it all! He's quite gutted that he is going to be working when its England vs Argentina - actually come to think of it, I'm working that day too :( I'll just get the kids at work to sit down and watch it with us - cause I know all the staff will try and get out out work!

Tell me about it! England have the abilty to get far in the competition - but not when they play like that. They had good players such as Owen and Scholls which seemed to have not done anything throughout the entire match. Why they took off Vassel is also beyond me.

I couldn't believe when I heard France had lost! After their performance in the last World Cup as well! Don't most of the Senegal players play for the French league though?!

Your lucky with the times seen as you live on that side of the world. For us in England - we just have to get up early to watch the matches. But I guess the games are on at such arkward times in the US, there really isn't much point. I guess it's also not such a major game as American Football and Basketball over there.

There won't be many Americans watching the World Cup. The younger generation that has begun to play soccer (or futbol or whatever) within the past ten years will no doubt watch, but for those of us who didn't grow up with it there is no interest.  Give me the 300 pound linebacker any day... I've never seen one that big!!  ;)

Ok, ok, I meant to say 295lbs ;D They're so fat. It's like watching a beached whales mudskipping after a little pointy pig :o

So !  I post this about a minute in real time after the final whistle :

USA 3 Portugal 2

Not bad for a 'crappy' team - Portugal were considered one of the Dark Horses for the cup....

I'll be interested how your media will react to this.

It almost seems like I'm the only one who thought you could do it.

I couldn't beleive it. I caught bits of the match as I was at work. Everyone slags of American soccer and this has proven that they can do it. Portugal have the apparent best player in Europe in their team and also are favourites to get far in this tournament. There have been some real surprises in this World Cup I must say - nonetheless, well done USA! :)

Davester

Glad to see you're giving it a go at least.  You actually picked one of the poorer matches to watch.

You are correct in your observation about the lack of goals scored (not points).

It is one of the common complaints/observations of non-soccer people, who watch the games.

But, it is exactly that which makes it exciting to watch (admittedly it's something that helps if you have grown up with it and are used to it).  The very fact that the result could hinge on one mistake, or that a team can attack for the whole match and still be defeated by one breakaway goal, is exactly why you see soccer players going absolutely beserk when they score.

Becuase goals are hard to come by and are therefore so valuable.

As a non-basketball fan, I would argue that it is too easy to score.  You get games where even if a team is down by 7 with 22.3 seconds to go, they can still win by 3.

In Baseball, I've always thought it would be much more interesting if the fielders didn't have gloves and had to rely on more skill and timing to catch the ball.

Grid Iron would be interesting if they took of their padding and bashed the crap out of each other with no protection.  Also thay could use the same team instead of having an offense and a defense.  They could also multi-skill someone (else) to kick the ball, rather than having one guy whose sole job it is.

Field Hockey (note, not Ice Hockey) - most teams seem to be more content to force a penalty corner rather than take the opportunity to shoot for goal.  There seems something inherently wrong with that !

But what I am getting at is that is that I am not putting down any of those sports.  They are all attractive for their own reasons.

One of the great things about soccer is that anyone can play (to varying degrees of course).  You don't have to be tall (a major asset in Basketball, AFL, Volleyball).  You don't have to be physically strong (Grid Iron, Rugby League etc).

You don't have to be able to Ice Skate.

You can just play it.  But yes the scoring is low.  For the above reasons though, this is why FIFA have more member nations than the U.N. (at least that used to be the case, I am unsure of now), and it is regarded as 'The World Game'.

Now that France are out, anything could happen. I'm sure the odds on Senegal have been changed majorly since their victory in the opening game.

I'm definitely going for England. Patriotism, perhaps, but look at our minor sports teams/players, and that's where the greatness in British sport lies. We have the best rowers (which we have had for the last 20 years), archers, snooker players... I could go on. But I won't, it's a stretch.

Brazil are currently 3-0 up against China with 50:19 gone. It makes a change from the basketball scores I'm so used to seeing on minor television channels.

Basketball scores in soccer? The most famous examples are the Arbroath-Bon Accord match when Arbroath won 36-0 in 1885. This game made John Petri famous, being the scorer of a record 13 goals in that single game. The highest FA Cup score ever was 26-0.

Brazil are now 4-0 up after 54:49. Ronaldo has just scored.

Bobo, you neglected to mention that the Arbroath score would have been higher but for (a) they hadn't invented goals nets at that stage, and (b) in one half, the ball kept going in the creek that ran behing the pitch.

I'm not making the last one up, I read in it a reliable history of the game somewhere some years ago.

Cheers FB! Nice to know you were thinking of me ;)

I'm so gutted that I have to be in at college early on Wednesday - because I'm going to miss the second half of the Nigeria match :( Hmm, can't decide whther to be naughty and just miss and hour of Media class!!

Ferdinand, Mills and Beckham were great in the match, so was Owen, even though he missed, they were some fantastic shots. I kind of think they made a slight mistake by sticking towards defending for the last part of the game - it made the tension unbearbale when I was watching and it gave the Argentininas so many chances. However, it paid off in the end!

Lol - as if Maradona said that - it was about time we beat them though! I know they're my team and that, but they played so much better and definitly deserved to win. I thought the Argentinians played quite dirty in the 1st half, but my Uncle Tony who, for some reason, supports Argentina (obviously) doesn't agree with me! He thinkings we didn't desrve the penalty and were faking! I can tell you there was adebate on the phone  ;D

This World Cup is full of surprises. If anyone had asked me to predict who would be in in the quarter finals I probably would have only predicated a couple of teams right. What the hell have the USA been on for the last couple of weeks!(not meant as a bad comment, just surprising, just incase I offend anyone ;d) I cannot believe they have got this far, especially with a sport that isn't that popular over there. Well done anyway! The Germany match should be very intriguing. I want to see England vs USA final - that would be highly interesting! :)

But before I count my chickens, we've got to beat Brazil. It's going to be tough this Friday. I'm just happy that I don't have to go into college until 10.30 am so I can watch the match ( at 7.30 am - not a very nice time I must say, but oh well). Anyway, have got to keep my hopes up ( even though my instincts are pessimistic) - so C'mon England!!! :D

I don't know, I think the USA team sort of bumbled this far - not to say that they lack the ability or anything (it is VERY surprising they made it this far though). Everyone here is extremely pessimistic about this team; if you're not a winner, the American public don't want to hear from you (remember the Australian Olympics?). I guess it must be kind of cool to have no expectations from anyone and then making it this far. There's also this last match with Mexico in which they demonstrated such great sportsmanship (i.e. they didn't condescend to fighting with the Mexicans - that's the last time I ever root for that team >:( ).  7:30 a.m. is bad? Try 11:30-2:00 a.m. and then 4:00 to 6 a.m.

England have got a full strength squad to pick from for their match against Brazil. Perhaps this will give us the boost, and, more importantly, the right squad, to play them. I'm just hoping we can either tire Brazil out before the end of the match, or find some way around their (penetrable, it has to be said) defence.

Good luck to England, but I accept that we are the underdogs, and so I shall also wish good luck to Brazil. After all, the matches aren't exactly going to plan, right now, are they?

The best things about this World Cup:
1. The best team won (I know, I'm an Englander - but Brazil were inarguably the best team)
2. Fans, when greeted with courtesy, responded with courtesy (I can only hope that they remember the experience when they return home)
3. The "new" teams distinguished themselves, especially behaviourally (though they are quickly catching on to the art of the dive)

We could almost have a "one name wonders - soccer" thread with the amount of these such world cup stars that we are now aware of...

Just had to bring this one back alive since I sdidn't get to comment on the final as I was on holiday:

In our hotel, 90% of the people were German at the start of the holiday. The Tv room was filled with people (Probably 3.4 of the hotel) and there were only about 10 of us who were supporting Brazil. Honestly, the room was like a morgue when Ronaldo scored!

Brazil were the rightful winners - so well done :)

And the Yanks' defeat at the feet of Germany proved we still have a long way to go before we can become a soccer powerhouse. Brazil was unquestionably the best team period. If you can score 3 goals against the world's greatest goaltender from Germany, that is pure greatness. And no matter how well the Americans did in this quadrenial event, soccer will still be a kid's sport or a minor sport here. Even if the baseball players strike.  :(

You be too hard by far on the 'Yanks'.  They did extremel well to get where they did, and they did it by playing entertaining football along the way, and everyone there should be proud of their achievement - after all they are in one of the few sports that America competes in internationally......

To lose to Germany by a solitary goal is no disgrace.  It was certainly a moral victory.

Personally, I think it says a lot more about the German team: possibly the worst team they've fielded in a World or European Cup that I can remember but they still manage to get through to the final... Aided by quite a fortunate draw, IMO.  I don't mean to demean the US team, I thought they should have won against Germany, but the Germans fluked their way through.  Again.  They're kind of good at that.

I wasn't as hard on the US team as I am the young "fans" who desert the game after high school. Soccer to Americans has always been low scoring, endless cycles in tedium. They don't care about how much physical training is needed to run across a field that big with a ball by their foot. It just like volleyball or curling in that the fans lose interest when Americans aren't dominating. Take for example the poor domestic coverage of the Wimbledon men's singles. Their was no American in the men's quarterfinal for the first time in recent memory, so the only coverage the US gave was repeating Sampras losing his match ad nauseam. Well at least there were the Williams sisters.   :(

You mention Venus and Serena Williams which is an interesting point. I heard someone say - I think they were exaggerating, so it shouldn't be taken seriously - "Why, if they win so often, are they in a tournament where the other players just can't compete".

Now, I know this point was made in anger, jest perhaps, but give them credit, they're good at their own sport. Same deal with... Kasey Keller, for example. A solid, American goalkeeper, have had him over in Britain for a while. Okay, he's not the world's best, perhaps, but he still turns out some great performances in America's "fifth sport" - although an assumption based mainly on a stereotypical British view on America's baseball, basketball, football, ice hockey norm. What I'm trying to say is, participants in any sport are bound to take it seriously, but when this sport is pushed into the background in favour of the other four, I think these guys should be commended for doing what they do.
