Does anyone watch anime?
Subject: Re: Anime?
All the time - well not really, but I do watch it when I can.
You just reminded me that I have to post A Burn-Up W DVD to someone who bought it from me...
Subject: Re: Anime?
Hey another Anime fan!!! ;D
I like the movie oriented stuff, it really makes you think more than some of the OAVs and series out there. For example..
Akira
Ninja Scroll
Perfect Blue
Blood
Vampire Hunter D
Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust
Amon Saga
and my 2 favs
Ghost in the shell
Princess Mononoke
Subject: Re: Anime?
I tend to watch older Anime (70s to early 90s), but I don't watch a lot of the recent stuff... too much diving into the othersized heads, too much whining, too much endless yelling of other peoples names, too much repeating the obvious (my wife and roomate watched the entire Fushigi Yugi series 4 or 5 times and I cringed everytime I heard a "MIYAKA!!!!!!" "TOMAHOME!!!!!" interchange, which seemed to be every 5 minutes.
Give me Vampire Hunter D (Bloodlust was good too), Akira, Ninja Scroll, Demon City, Lensman (despite how close it is to Star Wars: A New Hope, Venus Wars, Robotech (Macross, Southern Cross, Mospeada, II, Plus... Japanese and English versions). Guyver was good too, despite Mizuki's tendency to whine; as is Robot Carnival. Tenchi Muyo was decent, though I haven't watched much of anything past the first 5 episodes (as far as I'm concerned, the 1st ep was the best and it degenerated a little each time after). Most of the more recent stuff I've seen is Utena and Trigun, though my roomate works in a comic/anime store now, so we get a lot of free rentals...

We definitely have the same taste! I love to watch the old stuff I grew up watching like Captain Harlock, Galaxy Express 999, etc., as well as the early 90s stuff like Kimagure Orange Road, Yu Yu Hakusho, Gundam 0080 and 0083 (god! Am I coming off like a fan-boy or what?). There's some new stuff out there that's caught my eye, but I most of it I don't really like...I guess, rather than being a, wachamacallit? - "otaku" - I'm more of nostalgia freak.

PS- anyone see the Leiji Matsumoto videos for Daft Punk's album Discovery. There's like 4 or 5 videos! They rock! They RAWK dammit!

Thanks Natski! I really do like the movie.. it makes you think about the consequenses of the human race just like Princess Mononoke does.. Have you ever seen Sorcerer Hunters? that one of the few series that I do like ;D
I am suprised that no one has mentioned Outlaw Star or Cowboy Bebop (dont let the name fool you its about a group of bounty hunters and its pretty good. It has a James bond feel to it) ;)
Altho I am burned out on giant robots ie robotech, Gundamn, one series that has caught my eye is Pilot Candidate.... I guess because it centers on the training that all pilots go through for the 5 goddesses (mecha).... all these that I have just mentioned can be seen on saturday nights during the adult swim show on cartoon network from 11pm to 2am. Give it a try, anime fans! ;D

Has anyone seen or heard of "Mazinger" or "Mazinger Z"?
It's from the late 70's - early 80's. The male robot shot his fists out in battle and the female robot shot her breasts out, as missiles, in battle. Totally funny stuff!

I watch it and I love it! My favorite series is "Key the Metal Idol" and my favorite movie is "Princess Mononoke".

Only someone like Go Nagai could come up with something like that ::) The female robot's name is Aphrodite! Koji Kabuto is the name of Mazinger's pilot and has the best hairdo (I want a 'do like that one!). Damn robot pops out of a swimming pool!!

Incredible that I finally found someone else who's heard of (and/or remembered) this. It's supposed to be a cult classic. ::) Perhaps in Japan. :-/

Hey, you're the ONLY person, besides my uncles and my mother, who knows of the series Candy (probably THE best series ever animated) as well as Remi. Now, if only I could find someone who's also seen Mako: La Sirena Enamorada...
Mazinger is a total classic pretty much around the world (it's been translated into Chinese, Korean, Arabic, French, Spanish, English, German, etc). Don't forget also that Mazinger was actually destroyed and had to be rebuilt into Mazinger Z (shades of Dragon Ball?). I don't recall specific episodes, but I used to watch this all the time back in the day. Go Nagai is the creator of such animated mayhem as Devilman and Cutey Honey (the superheroine who strips into a new character when she goes into battle :o :o :o ), among others - so it's only natural that he'd have the female robot shoot out her cone-breasts ::) There was also a third, short, stubby robot driven by a fat guy and his two skinny friends - kind of like a sidekick/comedy relief.

Now...
If we could find at least one episode of each of these and send a copy to some cable station, they'd probably consider a classic anime hour or something. ? ? ? ? ? ? Goodness knows there are worse things on TV.

I'd subscribe to that station in a snap! Toonami has Thundercats and used to air the old Gundam show. That's probably as close to "classic" as we'll ever see. Most people, and this includes the fans of anime, aren't that interested in old, REALLY old, shows; seeing as to how the new material blows any other sort of animation away (and I would include Disney, Dreamworks, and WB) with few exceptions (Pixar). Oldies like Gigantor (Iron Man 28), Ulysses 31, and Treasure Island only attract those who saw the series when they aired on the regular TV networks right after school or on Saturday mornings - at least, that's what I think. Maybe if they were given a chance, audiences could have the possibility of being enthralled by some of the best stories ever animated as well as some of the spoofiest sci-fi robot shows that Japan is renown for.

Anyone watch Gundam Wing? I swore I'd never watch anime, but my younger cousin got me hooked.
Fact:95% of all anime is nudity!!!
For all the video game people out there. Ever notice how all Anime video games have the woman with extremely tiny waists and really big boobs. It's so Adolescent boys and men will buy the games. just thought I'd rain on someones pleasant sunshine today ;) :P

Have you seen the water colour illustrations by Haruhiko Mikimoto? They're really good and have that "impressionist" feel to them (even though he uses water colours and impressionists used thick, oily paints...). You should also check out Mamoru Nagano - he was a fashion designer before he got into making comic books. Yoshitaka Amano is excellent too. Many would attest to his talents from watching the character desings for Vampire Hunter D. There's also animation directors like Katsuhiro Otomo (Akira), Yoshiaki Kawajiri (Perfect Blue, Ninja Scroll), and Mamoru Oshii (Ghost In The Shell, Beautiful Dreamer). Quite excellent work, IMHO. And most of these guys started the same way - drawing from what they liked (heck! Some aren't even "formally" trained like Mikimoto).
