Subject: VIRUS ALERT
I am not sure if this is the proper forum for this, so please bare with me if it is not! I received this E MAIL from a friend of mine in London this morning, and I want to warn everyone! This virus will be attached to everyone in your address book, so please pass along the warning! Go to START! Then click on FIND OR SEARCH! Type in jdbgmgr.exe making sure to check your C DRIVE! Click on FIND NOW! If you have it, there will be a little teddy bear by it! DO NOT OPEN IT! Right click and DELETE IT sending it to your recycle bin and then delete it from there as well!
Peace,Cat Lover

I do wish people would check before spreading hoaxes around the world:

DO NOT DELETE jdbgmgr.exe, it's part of Windows.

Hey, I beat you to it ;-)
Just as an aside, does anyone know if there has *ever* been a message going round "this file is a virus, if you find it, delete it" which actually *was* a virus?

Damn right - our email system is going nuts sending out notifications of klez-infected incoming emails... Ah, the joys of *not* using Microsoft email products ;-)

Blimey we even got warned about this being a hoax by our systems department at work, it's not like them to be so on the ball!! ;D
I think the funniest thing was my best friends works computer department sent everone at her work an email that turned out to have a virus and crashed their own system.Ironically her computer was the only one that was ok cos she never bothers to read their emails anyway and just deleated it!!She then got in trouble for not having read it and therefore not knackered her computer - go figure!

Snopes is a good site to check those on. Also, try www.breakthechain.com.

Oh, I meant where on the virus alert it says "If there is a gray teddy bear by it, you have a virus!" I checked it out for the fun of it, and sure enough, the jdbgmgr.exe thing came up with the gray teddy bear. I was commenting on how it looked more like a gray dog than a gray teddy bear to me.

Boy, I really fell for this one. I didn't even read past Cat_Lover's post and went ahead and deleted the jdbgmgr.exe file. Even followed her directions of emptying the recycle bin. :o Fortunately, I was able to recover it but wouldn't have been a happy camper if I couldn't. Well, I learned my lesson and will read all the post in the future before acting. ;) :D ;D

I just want to apologize for the scare! I just fell for it as did my friend who E MAILED me the message! Next time, I won't be so quick to panic and will do my research first, so I won't be such a computer dud! Sorry!

Catlover, after what you went through a few months ago you have every right to get worried when someone warns you about a virus. Someone did send her a virus and me as well. I thought it was a spam letter so I deleted it and didn't open it. Recently a webmaster friend of mine e-mailed me and informed me that 150 poems of mine were lost on his poetry page. Someone targeted my files and another of my friend's files. Thank God I had backed up my poetry. My friend worked hours and got the poems back but not after a headache. The person who was bothering me (I have a hunch as to who sent the viruses) didn't hurt me but she caused that webmaster alot of hassle.
Viruses are such headaches and worry all of us. Did you know that there are 12,000+ viruses circulating daily? That was from CNN. My advice to everyone is to not open unfamiliar e-mails, scan attachments that you aren't positive are from reliable sources and keep that Antivirus software. I use McAfee software. I routinely run a complete scan of my system and I haven't had any viruses yet. I am scared of them.
I have to say this, when my friend's site was attacked the culprit who sent the worm purposely targeted me and my friend's files out of 100+ literary pages on that site. We were the only ones affected. I think it is the same person who targeted Catlover a few months ago. I think doing this sort of thing is despicable and low. I can't ever see any reason for someone trying to destroy someone's files and computer.
Enough of my rambling. I just think sending viruses to people is wrong. I am even debating seeing if there are laws about the person tampering with my poetry. It is copyrighted material. Rambling again....please friends, be cautious.
Love/Peace,
A'isha

For me personally, Cat_Lover, I am not upset at you at all. You had very good intentions---we all fall for hoaxes every once in a while. At least you cared enough for giving us the heads up. :D I am "delete" crazy anyway, I just love that button for some reason. No harm done. ;) :) :D I am known for getting virus' galore so I suspected if a new virus was out there, it would be in my computer. ;D

Felophile,
I didn't mean to jump on you in pointing out it's a hoax, it's just that I receive more emails about hoaxes than I do viruses. When I wrote:
Quoting:Just as an aside, does anyone know if there has *ever* been a message going round "this file is a virus, if you find it, delete it" which actually *was* a virus?End Quote
it was just a thought that EVERY email I have had which said "such-and-such a file is a virus" has been a hoax, NEVER a useful warning. Calling it a hoax is a bit of a misnomer, too: in my book, these messages are viruses in themselves, they just use the user to propogate - for example, what does a typical email virus do? It mails itself to everyone in your address book, then if you're unlucky deletes something from your hard disk. And what have you just done? Does is sound familiar?
Please don't think I'm getting at you, personally - after all, the above hasn't been explained to you before, but as a general message to everyone: please check with a reputable source (I use http://vil.mcafee.com/ as a virus information library) and don't believe any of them that say "virus checkers won't find this virus" as by the time it's done the rounds and got to your email the virus checking companies will know all about it.
Stay happy
Phil
