Subject: Would you by a "protected" CD

How does everyone feel about recent copy-protected CD's.  Sounds like the person hurting the most is the mac owner, who can't even play a CD on his/her own computer.  I will never buy a copy protected CD.  If you ask me, the record company is hurting themselfs more. Hopefully sales of protected CD's will be low.

I'd probably buy one unknowingly (I don't check the labels too closely at first)...if it was something I wanted to play on my PC I'd just dub the track(s) onto a CD-R using my dual player as the playback device and my component CD-recorder, then play the CD-R in the PC...

one word "No", only if it's one of my favorites artists though :D

I already buy copy-protected DVDs and videocassettes. Come to think of it, everything I buy is copyrighted and has a patent.

No.

I don't play CD's on my PC, but I'm getting rather tired of the record companies and all their B S! Deliberately sabotageing a CD isn't, IMO, any different than creating a virus...it's going to screw up things for a lot of people. Lawsuits will abound.  You heard it here first! ;)

I'm going back to just taping stuff off the radio...I am getting to the point where I may boycott CD's completely...

Off with their goatheads, I say!

I boycotted CDs a long time ago just because of their price!  :o

This whole copy-protection business is just too much.  >:(

I would buy a CD only if it wasn't available at the library. If I like it after I checked it out, then I would consider buying it. (Except one with a "Parental Advisory" sticker). :-[

I never burn them anyway, so I couldn't care less. Course if this means I couldn't play them on my puter (which is my main source for playing cds) then I wouldn't buy one.

Why buy CD's when you can get them for free on internet?  Screw the record label companies for charging us 13 to 20 dollars for a CD.  It only cost less than 5 cents to make a CD. That's why will never buy any CD's again.

So how does the ARTIST who recorded the CD get money from you doing that? Record companies get a lot from each CD they sell, that's true, but a lot of the money also goes to: the retailers, graphic designers, publicists, transport companies, writers, photographers, management and to the artist themselves. So if no one buys CDs, eventually there won't be any.

I tend to buy old/used cds for a buck a piece anyway, so I'm really not concerned about the price...

Well, I figure that people who just free-load of artists' work won't be missed.

If I had to buy a copy-righted CD, with no option of getting the music elsewhere, then I would. However, I'm extremely against the record industry doing this, just beacuse they *think* they are losing money from the net.

Ok, maybe some of it is to do with Napster et al, but I still stick to my argument which is posted in the Mp3 thread that I started - 90% of new music that these companies are putting out is, well, pure crap. If they want money, they should invest in some good artists. I'm not slagging off all modern artists, there are quite a few contemporary songs which I like, but if i had to choose, I'd stick too all the older music - that's where the real talent lies IMO :)

I guess they're out of luck. Pirates are hard to catch and even when they are, the law seems to be very lenient. I mean, I have yet to hear of a case where a computer owner has been incarcerated and fined $250,000.00 (USD) for duping his own private copies off the comp. They usually go after the big fish - like Napster and its clone pirates. Too bad for the artists since they're caught in the crossfire of their fans and the law. I don't know what is so hard about the concept of piracy that people don't get, but I guess they might reason it as a "victimless" crime like cheating on a test or finding lost money and not turning it to the police, etcetera. Let 'em do it, I guess; there's nothing I can do about it. I admit to making my own comps from my own CDs with my double-deck CDR for my car and work, but having known some artists it would feel weird to steal from them by not paying for an album or a song which they created.

I hear ya. I bet artists must find it very flattering to know they're being ripped off, but in every society one must contend with such cadre of thieves.

Well, I'm off to the record store and lift some Front 242 CDs - anyone want anything? Oh, I forgot the rest can download from the pirates. I'm just old fashioned and like the rush I get from shoplifting (even though I can fully afford to buy the darn things...).

Its really sad to know that Artists dont make squat off of thier CDs, the only way to do so is through endorcments and concerts. It really ticks me off to see record companies are so giant, it makes me think of slave labor.

As far as the copy protected CDs dont worry its easy now with digital links to your sound card from your desktop/stereo CD player to copy it to your HDD and bypass the copy protection and therefor burn a "clean" copy of the original. The new protection is easy to bypass, just a bit harder to do.

Now when they start putting chips in our burners like what the congressman would like to do, that is going a bit too far! But soon after there will be bypass chips that you can install  ;D
