Subject: Six flags, Sugar Ray and Duran Duran

Written By: Screwball54 on 05/03/02 at 00:55 a.m.

I was watching TV and a six flags commercial came on.  No big deal, except they were using "Fly" by sugar ray to advertise six flags.  Well this song was a hit in 1997.  What if they had done a commercial in 1992 with a song from 1987? I Remember how astonished everyone was at Duran Durans 1992 comeback and there was only a three year gap.  Do you think the average 10-15 year old who this comercials geared at would be able to associate themselfs with this music?  Would a 10 year old in 92 be able to identify with whitesnake, warrant, or eddie money?  why was it taboo 10 years ago, but not now?

This may sound weird.  Market.  Who's the audience they are trying to reach and what age group.  More and likely they   are trying to reach our age group with new artists singing song that we know and relate to.  This may spark the memeries of youth but tie us into today.  Getting us to go back and revisit our youth.  or......
they just maybe out of material. 8) ??? :P :-[ :-X :-/

Nostalgia is excessively powerful, just look at these sites.  Just remember all the burger king commercials in the mid-to-late 90s using songs from the 70s and 80s ("Smoke on the Water", "I Melt With You"...)

I don't think it was necessarily 'taboo' back then, just slightly rarer than now. Songs from the 80's are frequently being used in adverts lately, for example, 'Cars', 'Blue Monday', 'Cold As Ice', 'Every Breath You Take' and 'Wonderful Life'. Maybe this is beacuse of the 80's revival that is becoming more and more apparent.

I think the younger generation are becoming more musically adverse - and I guess I'm a (slightly older ;) ) example of that. I like some new music, but I like a lot of old stuff to counterbalance it. Maybe a 10 year old watching the advert you mentioned, may say to a sibling or parent - ''what's that song? I like it.'' - and then their music tastes begin to grow. I'm guessing they picked the song beacuse it was appropriate - I'd probably have more to comment if I actually knew the song in question! I've only heard 2, Sugar Ray songs!! :)

For just a second there, I thought you were talking about Sugar Ray Leonard & Roberto Duran!

It seems if they were trying to reeach our age group with a new song they could have used Goo Goo Dolls or Creed.  I always considered sugar ray a band geared toward teenage girls.  The other current six flags commercial has Britney Spears, So I think its geared to somebody in thier mid teens.

That's true about Goo dolls and Creed.  However I meant the songs when we were teens.   Trying to connect the generations together.  Songs from our youth sung by teen idols of today.  I haven't seen the commericals.  So it was just a guess.
