Subject: Remastered E.T

Written By: Gis on 04/24/02 at 04:33 a.m.

Has anyone been to see it? I have decided not to it was sad enough first time around (though for once I managed not to cry that time!)I shall never forget the girl next to me started bawling really loudly and everyone was turning round to look and tutting and glaring at me because I was sat next to her like I should do something about it and I didn't even know who she was!!

I've not, and I probably won't since there was an apparently need to "dialdown" the movie.  Maybe when it comes out on DVD...

I haven't seen it. I didn't like it the first time around, so I probably wouldn't like it now.

I have this on DVd and can barely tell the difference, aside from the "bike" sequence.
Excellent as ever, IMO.

I've also got the DVD and I saw it in the cinema twice last year.

You must have been sitting on the other side of us because the girl I went to see it with was also bawling her eyes out. I have it on video. I have heard that when they "remastered" it, they took out scenes or a line or something. I have one of the orginal. Haven't watched it in a long time.

The "re-mastered" version was made politically correct; They changed scenes, deleted scenes, added other never-before seen footage...

For instance:

In the scene where the "suited" men chase after the boys, after the boys take E.T., the suited men held guns in the original. In the remastered, they digitally replaced the guns with walkie-talkies.

In this example, I can understand the change from a possible parental perspective. The movie makers should have been smarter about filming the scene in the first place, IMHO.

I have a tendency to like the originals over the re-makes when the re-makes are altered beyond anything more than enhancing the visuals and sound.

I didn't much like the updated versions of the original Star Wars trilogy either.

I believe the original intent, integrity and even nostalgic value of these movies was compromised.

Hmmm...we don't have this thing of censoring guns in the U.K.  It took me a long time to work out why they never had proper guns in American cartoons instead of rayguns and crossbows and the like.

We were actually discussing the remake of E.T. this afternoon and my mate said they should have digitally enhanced the plot and made it so it was actually interesting. ;D

As the interview with Speilberg says on the DVD - he didnt really want to alter the movie - he just wanted to fix stuff that he was unable to do to his standard of perfection back then due to the lack of technology.

There is a scene at the beginning where ET is running - and it always looked so fake cos it was just the puppet on a dollyrun going in a dead straight line.  They have replaced it with a CGI scene where he is actually bounding along and it really improves the scene.

Another couple of scenes he has simply drawn in some character lines on ET's face to give it a teeny bit more emotion - especially in and around the eyes.

I havent watched it for a couple of months but something else in my memory is that they have dubbed over Drew when she calls Elliot "p e n i s breath" - dont quote me - I just didnt notice her saying it when I watched it whe I first bought it - when I unpack (am moving house) I will watch it again and check.

The DVD has some great "making offs" as well as Harrisons excellent deleted scene and the gorgeous scene of ET in the bath.

I also luv the chats with Spielberg - its a movie he is still extremely passionate about.

There is one scene in the orginal (I don't know if they "fixed" it or not on the DVD) when Elliot comes inside to tell the boys who are spending the night, "Don't go out there." If you look at one of the boys in that scene, he is mouthing the words. OOPS!

In my opinion, there was nothing wrong with the guns E.T. in the first place.  As far as I can remember, no one complained about those guns back in 1982.  Those guys were Federal agents, and Federal agents carry guns.  It wasn't like they were shooting at the kids or letting off an insane amount of ammunition rounds like The A-Team did back in '82.

Ever since Steven Spielberg and George Lucas became fathers, they became soft and over obsessed with "harming children".  Hence the infamous change Lucas made in Star Wars where Greedo shoots Han Solo first.  I also felt like Spielberg/Lucas are also pandering to the overly uptight soccer mom crowd with such silly changes.

"What about the children!!?""

The children will be just fine.  If a kid beats up another kid or shoots a kid, you can't blame E.T. or Star Wars.

I agree 100%

I was totally shacked when I found out they were "PC-ifying" a classic movie like "ET"!

Nobody had a problem with the guns in the scene in 1982, or any year up until the time it was changed for that matter.

ET was a classic, and will always be one.  So why on earth would you change it?
