Subject: Remote Jocks
I think my favorite music station, WRZX, has some kind of death wish. First, they take away all the modern rock and exclusively play excessively loud and crude hard rock (eg: Godsmack, Metallica, Limp Bizkit, etc.). Then they fire the one popular DJ on there (Nigel) and replace him with a smug person that isn't even a local dude. He broadcasts from somewhere in Florida, not Indiana. If WRZX is trying to increase ratings, then they've just lost a listener. Are there any stations in your area pulling the same stunt? >:(

Unfortunately, that's the trend with radio these days. Satellite feeds. That's the reason I'm no longer in the business. Stations find it cheaper to pump in a satellite feed than pay a live DJ. Tyhe trade off is that you lose your local identity. no matter how good the jock is, he's not in your area. Listeners can't call in like they can with a live jock, and the rapport with the local audience just isn't there. But I believe most listeners just don't care enough, or it wouldn't be a continuing practice...

there are a lot of stations pulling this.. in order to cut down on the cost of running stations, they syndicate regular DJs into areas they don't normally broadcast.. local talent is going the way of the dinosaur.. I used to hate WAAF in Boston/Worcester, but they're one of the few stations still using local DJs, and while they do play some garbage, I can tolerate it over several other talentless jocks in the area.. plus they launched Opie/Anthony (and fired them)

Sad indeed. :'( And some stations don't even bother airing any jocks, preferring that engineers or automation play songs without the talk.

Perhaps in time, listeners will notice the change, and realize their radio stations just aren't fun to listen to anymore. Then we can get some live jocks back on the air...

I listen to one station on the radio, and one station only. Star 93.7 They are one of the very few that have local jocks. (And while I like some of the stuff they play, most of it is just....ehhh).
The morning show on this station is great. ;D Local people, running local promotions. Inviting listeners to call in for this or that, and usually putting them on the air. One of the weekend guys runs a show from the local nightclub as well.
They are currently running a promotion called "Marry Me For Free". The station will pay for your wedding (hall, dinner for up to 100 people, flowers and live music) if you can get married this Valentine's Day. Every day they qualify several people, so no one will know who will get their shebang paid for till the last minute.
Best part is the idea struck him while he was on the air a week and a half ago. He asked listeners to call in with suggestions. After his show was over, he went upstairs to "the powers that be" to see if it could be pulled off.
That's what radio used to be like. It needs to go back to that, IMO. (Not to mention playing tunes!)

Or..they use the computer to AUTOMATE music.
I remember, there was a Top 30 show on here in South OZ in 1994. iT WAS great, because people who rung up, you knew..because most of them went to your school or were in your local area. It was cool how people who won cds and stuff, would brag about it the next day at school. Then in 1997 he moved to Sydney, and they satelited the show from Sydney, and it was now Natinal. IT SUCKED..as everone who run up..you didnt know..and it wasnt as 'personal' as before.
Its sad really :-(

Since this thread was posted, WRZX fired the Florida guy and replaced him with a real DJ from good ol' Indy. Who says there's no justice in this world anymore? ;)
