Subject: Another Plane Incident
What's going on here? Some 15 year old guy flies a small cessna plane into a building in Miami. Although it wasn't an act of terrorism, it was a form of suicide (he had a note in his pocket). But it seems like the horrific events of 9/11 have paved the way for new terror using planes. So my question is: can violence get worse than what happened to the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. I really hope not, but it's not looking too good.

Well, when that kid ran the plane into that Bank of America (it was in Tampa, Florida, actually..I only note this because my hubby's family lives in St. Petersburg/Tampa) anyway, I guess it did make the folks down there think "Not again!" That boy had other issues anyway, as I understand it, and he wrote, in his suicide note, that he sympathizes with Bin Laden and the people of Afghanistan. Now, be that as it may, and I am sure that there are others that feel that way as well, I really don't think that most people are going to do something so "crazy", even if they do feel for the people of those countries. I think that in general, people aren't going to prove anything by doing something so stupid. I'm not saying Sept. 11 couldn't have given people ideas...obviously, it can. BUT, I really don't forsee a rash of suicide missions going on in the states. Not that it couldn't happen again--it could--but I'm not overly worried about it.

That's not what I meant Marci, I'm not talking about a 'rash of suicide missions'. I'm talking about the fact that even though 9/11 was horrific, it can only get worse because people, crazy people, terrorists, psychos whatever you want to call them are going to continue doing these horrible things. No one ever considered that people could hijack a plane and fly it into a building and kill soooo many people, but it happened. But as time goes on, violence is only going to get worse.
Granted, that guy was obviously very troubled, but it seemed like he was trying to draw attention to two vulnerable aspects of daily life, which are skyscrapers and aeroplanes - no doubt thanks to Bin Laden.
Bin Laden opened up a whole new can of worms with succeeding in pulling a major stunt like that, on an aeroplane, killing so many people and in a freedom loving country of America. Because it has been done now, it can only get worse, these attacks can only get more violent. That is why I am worried.

My only comment here is what the hell was a 15 year old boy doing flying a plane in the first place.

he stole it.. but you don't have to have a driver's license to be working towards a pilot license...
supposedly the acne medicine he was on (some prescription drug) has been linked with depression before.. catch-22 if you ask me.. you're depressed if you're on the stuff or depressed because you've got zits.. glad I never had to deal with it as a kid..

What? The zits or depression? ;)
No need to answer, I'm just being contrary. ;D

The acne medication is called Accutane. ÊOne of my doctors tried to prescribe it. ÊI looked on the chart he was filling out and under Accutane it says: "WARNING: CAUSES SEVERE DEPRESSION" ÊThis may not be all that relevent, but I am wondering why they still prescribe it. ÊThe only reason they knew it was linked to depression was because there was a rash of suicides among the teens using it.
Anyhoo, the kid in Tampa obviously had deep-seated problems. ÊLike it was said, I don't think he meant to hurt anybody but himself. ÊI just think it is terrible that he used "the plane crash" as a symbol of his sympathy for Bin Laden. ÊI also don't think there will be a wave of crazy people trying new ways of terrorism as a result of 9/11. ÊThat attack, as horrific as it was, was threatened long ago. Ê
I know I'm rambling, but one more piece of trivia.....one of my co-workers told me she saw a tape on the news from way back with Oliver North being interviewed. ÊNorth was talking about all the precautions he takes for his safety. ÊWhen asked who he most feared, he said Osama Bin Laden. ÊHe claimed that he and his family had been threatened before and that Bin Laden would carry out his threats. ÊGuess who he was being interviewed by?? ÊAl Gore.

The kid may have been depressed, but he involved innocent people when he took his preferred method of death and used it against innocent people.
Yes, My Sharona, it will get worse. There are people right this minute in labs, hiding, trying to find the perfect bio-terror weapon. And what will happen when they do?
As long as there are people who think they should be a world-ruler, there will be terrorists and their followers.

On a lighter note: Please Return Your Plane To The Upright Position

Tipped up on its tail? I've never seen that before.

Sadly suicide is a very selfish act it always affects more than just the person doing the act.
Yes there are and will always be nutters out there in the world plotting total world domination but how about having a little faith in mankind and human kindness or we may as well just give up now !!

Well said, Gis. I think now, more than ever, we have seen human kindness and a coming together of different races, ethnicities, and cultures. It is so sad that it took something as tragic as 9/11 to envoke this kind of change.
