Subject: Comedies of the Past; 70's, 80's, 90's and present

Written By: Criz on 01/02/02 at 12:13 a.m.

From each deacde, these are definitly my fav comedy programmes:
70's - Fawlty Towers ( the greatest comedy EVER in my opinion)
80's - Red Dwarf ( started in '88 and progressed through the 90's - very good stuff)
90's - Friends ( Absolutly love the first 3 series, but started to go downhill mid of series 4 for me)

What are everyone elses? :)

I can't disagree with any of those three, except maybe I'd stick The Simpsons first, Friends second, and Red Dwarf third. Three absolute classics. I guess I disagreed, hmm?

I've actually hardly ever watched the simpsons really, so i cant comment. The times i watched it, i liked it, but didn't think it was anything special. Guess you agreeed, but then changed your mind and disagreed after thinking about it bobo! :)

As one can guess from my screen name, I'd put Red Dwarf up there  :)

I never really watched Friends, although I like The Simpsons, South Park and especially the "Basil the Rat" episode of Fawlty Towers (it was one of the audio tracks on a 8-hour plane trip I took to Malaysia and back, so I must have listened to it about 6 or seven times...)

I don't know about how history will judge them, but at the time I watched a lot of Family Ties and Full House.

Ren and Stimpy I think re-triggered my childhood love of animation even before The Simpsons.

80's - The Golden Girls (I would actually laugh out loud! That's how you know a show is really funny.)

90's - The Fresh Prince Of Belair (laugh out loud fun, for sure! I have to add that Carlton, IMO, was THE funniest of the bunch - especially when he danced!)

00's - The Simpsons (not a dull moment)

70s - M*A*S*H
80s - Night Court
90s - Simpsons
00s - so far, Malcolm in the Middle, Titus & Grounded for Life

the 80s, Night Court really stands out for me, as does Cheers and Sledgehammer... I know I watched a lot of stuff like Silver Spoons, Family Ties, etc. but I don't think those shows age very well.  I watch them now, and I hesitate and they don't hold the same appeal that they did the first time

the 90s, the Simpsons win without a doubt.. I can't even think of anything in the same league.. Fraiser was ok for a couple of seasons, but that's it.

Titus I love for the fact that it's a black comedy, based on his real life. In one of the interviews I've read, he states that he would ask his brother if something his dad did, really happened, and his brother would respond with even more outrageous stuff than what he was bringing up.  He's one screwed up dude. Titus is unique in that the main action takes place in one location, and you flash back to what led you there at appropriate moments. Not the typical sitcom convention of taking place in the same location week after week. Fox keeps burying it though, so I doubt it'll be around for much longer, which is disappointing.

Malcolm in the Middle I love, because I was in the accelerated classes in school (we were never THAT geeky though), and is the dysfunctional family to the extreme, same thing with Grounded for Life.

I forgot to place my favorite 70's one -

Geez, that's tough. I did find The Jefferson's to be hysterical.

I'll leave it at that.  ;)

I don't know much about 70s comedies, but hasn't The Simpsons been notorious for a dip in form in the last few years? Although I can't pick out a bad episode in any of the 200+ that I've now seen (I've just gone and watched the whole of Season 2 on video), Trash Of The Titans being the last one that I've seen (the ones I haven't yet are on video, waiting, just waiting to be watched. Personally, I find the show to be as funny, if not funnier, than its always been. What does anyone else think? The Trash Of The Titans episode was hilarious (# They'll mop up when your over flowing... and tell you when your arse is showing #) With Oscar the Grouch as well, in the trash can. Hysterical.

I'm wondering out of of every name from the show, why you chose that? Any reasons for it? I absolutly adore Red Dwarf - i can watch 'Better Than Life' and never get bored of it.

I think the Basil the rat one is up there amongst the greatest episodes os 'Flowery Twats' *snigger* :) I also adore 'The Germans' and 'The Deaf Woman' episodes. Absolutly classic.

'' Mrs Richards: And another thing - I asked for a room with a view.
Basil:(to himself) Deaf, mad and blind. This is the view as far as I can remember, madam. Yes, this is it.
Mrs Richards:When I pay for a view I expect something more interesting than that.
Basil: That is Torquay, madam.
Mrs Richards: Well, it's not good enough.
Basil:Well...may I ask what you were expecting to see out of a Torquay hotel bedroom window? Sydney Opera House, perhaps? The Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Herds of wildebeeste sweeping majestically over the planes? ''

Absolutly brilliant :)

Well, I have never been "in". Indeed, I have always been a bit of the outsider nerdy guy. I feel I have an inordinate sensitivity to embarassment. And I tend to retain memories of painfully humiliating moments in my life, until displaced by more recent ones. Indeed, at one stage, I think I actually could recall the three most gut-wrenchingly worst moments of my life.

Although I hope that in contrast to Rimmer, I at least have the good grace to not blame others for my own shortcomings.

I just realised that I didn't put a 'present' one - and I started the thread! I think it would have to be, 'That 70's Show'. They have only aired the first 3 series over here so far, and I've been told that I look quite like Jackie! :)

Wow!  I didn't need to type much at all because I couldn't agree more  :D I would however ad "Family Guy" to the group ;)
