I used to be really into old cemeteries...I'd go around to them and look for stones from the 1700s and early 1800s, take photographs of them as art, and spend hours reading all the inscriptions and dates and writing reflective poetry. I particularly love crypts.

They have alot of great ones in general in New England, but in older areas, all of them, they're great too. Do you have alot of older cemeteries in the Pittsburgh area? There's one near my school that has a stone from the very early 1800s with somebody with the same name as my classmate on it...and it's on the street that he lives on!

well..I'm not sure about right around near Pittsburgh, I've never explored any around there...however, where I live (about 45 minutes east of Pittsburgh)...there are quite a few old ones.

I'm pretty sure W. Pennsylvania was settled first as the "backcountry" in revolutionary times, and wasn't Fort Duquesne at the "Three Forks" a major fort? Most of the W. Pennsylvania settlers back in the 1700s were poor squatters who often were in conflict with the native population, and George Washington himself. You can always tell alot about an area from the tombstones, the ethnic populations, the elements of style they liked, etc. Like you can tell when there were epidemics, times of prosperity, times of misfortune, and such. If you go into "bad areas" where I am, you can find the best ones, since those were settled earlier...there's a gorgeous one by this great old church just at the border of the slums that has stones going back to the 1720s, and a few great "flat ones" with a whole paragraph of text and more complicated fluting with the angels. Also, there are differences in the types of stone and design used overtime, and differences between the stones used by the Dutch and English populations...I have all these guides to the cemeteries of New Jersey.

This is my mom's headstone at the cemetary in French Camp, California, just on the outskirts of Manteca where I grew up. I had to take care of all the arrangements (that was morbid) & I chose to use her entire Yugoslavian name on the stone. These pics are from Feb. 2006.  Two pics are similar but one has the shadow of branches from the big sycamore tree. Her grave is right under the tree. I got to choose the spot & figured the tree would help me remember where it is when I visit to place flowers.  8)

There's an extremely old cemetary not too far from our house and they have graves there that go back to Civil War times.  They are extremely ornate and some of the statues are massive.

That's been the fascinating thing to me about cemetaries, trying to find the oldest grave. This place has dates from the 1840's, 1850's. I'll take a couple pics of those next time. Those big ornate statues and monuments are incredible.

Comedy legend Spike Milligan has finally got the last laugh, more than two years after his death. It follows an agreement with the local diocese over the wording on the headstone of his grave at St Thomas's Church in Winchelsea, East Sussex. Relatives of the former Goon have now decided that it can bear the star's epitaph: "I told you I was ill." However, the inscription had to be written in Gaelic in order for it to be approved by the Chichester Diocese. Milligan, who was an Irish passport holder, was buried close to his home in Udimore after he died, aged 83, from liver failure in February 2002. But fans visiting his grave found it was only marked by some plants and a small statue because his family had been unable to agree on the headstone. It now bears the words "Duirt me leat go raibh me breoite", or "I told you I was ill", and the English words "Love, light, peace". Bill Horsman, chairman of the Goon Show Preservation Society, said: "News of the headstone going up on Spike's grave is marvellous. "We had been very concerned for some time about the situation. "It was very sad that the grave was in such a state, but it was down to very sensitive family problems and we simply could not get involved. "We're very pleased it's been resolved and with such a classic Spike line. "We all fell about laughing when we heard it." Milligan formed the Goons with Peter Sellers, Harry Secombe and Michael Bentine and was widely regarded as one of the greatest influences on British comedy.

My dad actually sent a photographer to Lithuania to film the gravestones of my ancestors and take pictures of them. Surprisingly, most of them were not defaced/knocked over by the Nazis.

I love how in England, they have old graves in the walls and floors of the churches and cathedrals, and giant monuments sticking out of the floor fashioned like a statue of the couple lying in a four-poster bed.

Some of the oldest graves I've ever seen are at Christ Church on St. Simons Island.  The athuor Eugenia Price is buried there.  If I can get some photos from my mother-in-law, I'll post them.

I think it is so sad that in England now you are not allowed to put poems or the like on graves anymore, also most diocese will not allow angels or crosses anymore. To me they are what make graveyards unique and beautiful.

There was outrage in a couple of our graveyards when at first it looked like they had been dreadfully vandalised,with stones scattered about broken and lying flat.It then turned out that the local authoritiy had actually sent workers out to 'lay flat' any leaning stones for health and safety, incase they fell on anyone !?! Considering this guys were filmed booting over stones or wacking them with mallets until they either broke or fell over it was concluded they were pretty damn strudy in the first place. I believe following the public out cry most of the stones were put back up by the council though sadly some were damaged beyond repair. I hope those guys get haunted !! I swear if it was my grave I'd come back and follow them around booting them up the arse every few minutes !

I love graveyards and spend alot of time browsing stones.  I may have pictures i can download, if not I will take some.  I have been to the one in Salem Massachusetts many times.  The one of Judge Hathorne is contoversial in that a woman condemned by him to be hanged as a witch told him he would drink his own blood, and when he died  he had an anyourism and blood come out of his mouth!.  He was the grandfather of Nathaniel Hawthorne who was so ashamed of the incident of the judges part in the trials he added the "w" to his name to distance himself. There are many graveyards in Massachusetts that are odd.  I have also visited Highgate in London and Pere LaChaise.

There's a little cemetary behind the place where my daughter works. There are houses and buildings built all around  it, and grass and weeds everywhere. It's really old and I can tell no one takes care of it anymore. It's pretty much right in someones backyard, so I'm wondering if it belongs to whoever bought the house. I'd like to find out, and see why nobody has taken care of it, and maybe I could go over and clean it up.

No caring of graveyards comes down to the dead relatives are now distant to the living relatives, and they are truly ignorant of their existance.

I visited the graves of my one of my Great-Grandfathers in Oxford and found it well kept.

My family had to finally pay for perpetual care of our relatives' graves because we couldn't get up there enough to make sure they were well-kept. 

This is a picture of Christoph Wippel's gravestone.  He's one of my family members that chose to stay in Germany.

This is the St. John Parish Church that my husband and I visited in Barbados.  It was first built in 1645, but had to be rebuilt twice because of hurricaines.  It was incredible.  The crypts all had stairs that you walked down to get to the actual headstone.  The first couple of pics are of the church itself, and some headstones inside of the church.  The rest are of the cemetary.  (Check out the view in the background of the biggest crypt.)  The last pic is the grave of a prominent Basian lawyer in the 1800's.  He was considered a "stand up guy" so they buried him standing up!

Yes, I found my great-great grandfather there a couple months ago.  I was so happy because it was a good picture of the grave and since it is located about 5 hours from where I live, I had always planned to go there and get a photo but never could find the time.
