Does anybody here know what's behind the recent "pretzel bun" craze?

First Sonic Burger offered a hot dog with the bun. Now local restaurants are asking (when I ask for a roll) "would you like a pretzel dough roll" , and that hot red-headed Wendy's chick :-* is hawking a chicken sandwich on a pretzel bun.

What's the big deal with pretzels? ???

Pretzels are freakin' awesome; that's why!  That being said, I really don't eat fast food and have never tasted the pretzel bun, although I would give them a try.

Never heard Sonic's called "Sonic Burger" sounds so 50's, I love it.


I have yet to try a pretzel burger, but am very interested to see how it will taste.

I love pretzels but they tend to be dry.  I don't know how well that would translate into a bun.

Some companies do have pretzel crust pizza, I have heard of pretzels in ice cream.  Give it time, pretzel cookies are probably coming. ;D

Yes, we have Flipz here!  :)

When I think of pretzels I think of the small hard kind (like in Flipz) so it's hard to picture them being used for burger buns or pizza dough.  I've only had the larger bready kind of pretzels once or twice (including memorably in Philly of course!).

Thinking about that style of pretzel I could see it working as a bun if you folded the knot smaller so that ended up more like a cinnamon roll.

I haven't seen actual Flipz in a long while, but the walgreens here has bags of chocolate covered pretzels for 99 cents. I bought some and enjoyed them.

I think pretzels will be the trend food of the '10s.
They now have pretzels in the display case at Starbucks where I live. Haven't tried the cheese one, but the Dijon is pretty good.
I like pretzels but I'm with Max on this one---I would imagine it would be a very salty burger.

I would want to taste the bun first to see if it would work with my food... I might like it better on a chicken sandwich than on a burger
