New York Plans to Ban Sale of Big Sizes of Sugary Drinks
The proposed ban would affect virtually the entire menu of popular sugary drinks found in delis, fast-food franchises and even sports arenas, from energy drinks to pre-sweetened iced teas. The sale of any cup or bottle of sweetened drink larger than 16 fluid ounces — about the size of a medium coffee, and smaller than a common soda bottle — would be prohibited under the first-in-the-nation plan, which could take effect as soon as next March.
The measure would not apply to diet sodas, fruit juices, dairy-based drinks like milkshakes, or alcoholic beverages; it would not extend to beverages sold in grocery or convenience stores.
Seems like a good first step really. Soda is 100% awful for your body. The quantities people consume are way out of whack as well. Sure, people should exercise self control, blah blah blah.
Personally I'd be happier if they mandated that water be more available.

I don't have a problem with that, if people want more they will just buy more drinks.
I can't help but wonder why they excluded alcoholic beverages though? :-\\

Considering how expensive alcohol is when it's served (vs. bought in a store) I doubt they have much of a problem with large containers. Not to mention bars already have to watch consumption by patrons to make sure they aren't getting people too drunk.

I think it's asinine. Beyond stupid. The problems we have in our country/states/cities, and THIS is what people are concentrating on?
If you outlaw big sugary sodas, only outlaws will have big sugary sodas!

I hope they don't, we need to drink to be thirsty so this is ridiculous!

Hmmm I usually find the opposite myself!
Though I think they could be concentrating their efforts on something much more important I do think it raises a valid point about the portion sizes and how this has changed over the years

What does the size of the cup have anything to do with it?

I'd rather they be required to provide smaller cups.

Didn't a federal judge throw the ban out?

I'd stockpile a thousand 32-oz cups, pay for three smalls, and fill it up at the self-serve fountain.
If a cop asks, "Where'd you get that?"
I'll say, "Nunya business, flatfoot!"

I no longer drink sodas except on rare occassions, but I remember when I was still drinking them as a kid, there was one time I ordered a Coke at a restaurant, and it came in the size of a pitcher!!

I still order soft drinks at restaurants, but I don't keep sugary beverages in the house. I eat too much sugar as it is.
My gripe about soft drinks in restaurants is sometimes they serve them flat. That's not acceptable to me. Vendors get away with it because nobody complains.
