If you have a sweet tooth, Sprinkles Beverly Hills is about to blow your mind with -- wait for it -- a 24-hour-cupcake ATM.
Is this a joke? No. Welcome to Candyland.
This spring, Sprinkles Beverly Hills plans to introduce two new treats to the family. The first is an automatic Sprinkles machine (aka the magic cupcake ATM). It will be continuously restocked and prepped to dispense fresh cupcakes, cupcake mixes, doggie cupcakes and Sprinkles apparel.

And they're going to install another ATM next door that dispenses ice cream???
Is this a potential multi-billion dollar idea or what?!? :o :o :o

I saw something on the food channel a couple of years ago. It was a place that was all vending machines with all types of food and there were tables where you sit down and eat. I can't think of the name of what it was called. I think it was something was maybe popular in the 50s or 60s.

They were called Automats.

They actually had a kitchen behind the machines and we refilled as soon as something was purchased.

Why did Automats die out? ???

Why did Automats die out? ???
It was easy and efficient when you could buy a meal for a nickel (or other single coin).
When costs broke the $0.25 barrier, you needed something (or someone) that could make change. At a buck, you needed bill acceptors, or you needed token vending machines.
That, and costs couldn't stay that low forever. The automat wasn't labor-free; someone in behind had to make the meals, and keep them fresh and hot. Health care regulations on how long food is allowed to stay under a warming lamp were also probably a factor.
Finally, and probably most importantly, the postwar era also marked the rise of the fast food industry. When you didn't even have to leave your car to eat, why bother parking? When you know exactly what your burger is going to taste like because it was made five minutes ago, why wonder if you're going to get a fresh one at the Automat? (And if you're the owner of a food service business, why try to juggle the ingredients to prepare a supply of 100 different menu items for the Automat, when you could just buy a McDonald's franchise and only worry about keeping inventory on hand to make burgers and fries?)

Customers wait in line at the machine for their cupcakes even though the store is still open, and empty of customers.

The machine does not create them, it just retrieves them...but I agree, I would rather go into an empty store to get waited on quickly rather than stand in a long line.

Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar, but... A Cupcake Is Never Just a Cupcake: The Psycho-Sexuality of a Twee Treat
Now you're probably already going "WTF", but the WTF-o-tron hasn't even begun to spin up.
http://kingjamesblog.typepad.com/welcome_to_king_james/images/muffin.jpg
It starts off weirdly enough, like, "a cupcake is a symbol for both a vagina and the female orgasm"...
http://s105.photobucket.com/albums/m239/floyda/fark%20tags/wtfair2.jpg
and then wraps that WTF around into:
"Cupcakes only care about their own orgasms. When you see a woman eating a cupcake, you're basically watching her perform cunnilingus on herself. Small and moist and warm and sweet, a cupcake's sole reason for existence is solitary pleasure. Historically, many symbols of female power or divinity involved fertility and/or reproduction: circles and eggs, Mother Earth and Mother Goose. But modern times call for modern branding, and if you're looking for the shorthand way to label something as being of, for or about the essence of a woman, and you have no pictogram of a vagina handy, by all means, slap a cupcake on it."
- Jezebel jumps the shark with A Cupcake Is Never Just a Cupcake: The Psycho-Sexuality of a Twee Treat
The Internet, desperate to outdo itself, promptly jumped into its time machine, went back a few months, and declared CHALLENGE ACCEPTED! (Link goes to barely-SFW image. They're just cupcakes. But they're probably not the sort of cupcakes that would be safe to bring to work. If they are... umm... are they hiring? :)
And when I saw that, I had to bring it here, and point out that modulo a little change to the innuendo (in who's end-o?), Denton's blog wasn't just a few months out of date, it's more than fifty years out of date.
Without further ado, I present the inimitable Terri "Cup Cake" O'Mason, with the following tasty little morsel of classic dementia from 1960:

Relevant to this thread: Homemade and fresh outa the oven is fine. Ordered over the Internet for a dime a dozen is fine. But at least in this post, you never go ATM.

My cousin had cupcakes at her St. Patrick's Day wedding this year. Apparently it's popular amongst brides nowadays.

Yep, that's it.
Or you could do it yourself. The design options are limitless.
If you can bake any cake recipe and melt chocolate (and anyone can bake a cake and melt chocolate), or even if all you do is buy a cake from the store, toss it into a food processor with some cream cheese and sugar, and melt the chocolate in the microwave, you can make cake pops. The original recipes didn't require small balls of raw cake batter that had been baked individually like micro-cupcakes. They simply took a pre-cooked cake (or cake leftovers) and blended it with other ingredients...
http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Ifc8wjPbTDI/SE3lQC4hqDI/AAAAAAAAAO0/tsZR9FTQkdA/s1600-h/IMG_1697.jpg
...before rolling into balls and decorating by dipping into melted chocolate and decorating with whatever was available.
