Subject: Lenten foods...

Written By: 2kidsami on 02/21/11 at 4:35 pm

I am starting this thread as Lent is approaching and I can remember the foods that my family only consumed this time of year.  Some of them were good, and we actually wanted them but after lent we were a little burnt on them, so into the recipe book they went and stayed till next year's lent came around.

Salmon Patties with creamed peas - YUMM
Fish Sandwiches (of course)
Tuna noodle (not my favorite)
Tuna melts - YUMM
manicotti - with just a marinara sauce over (this one we wanted more and more, but never got it)
Potato soup -  8-P (my mothers is just potato, milk, butter, salt and pepper - YUCK)

I remember eating lots of tuna salad, egg salad, fish sticks and fried fish.

My mother's fried fish wasn't bad but she served it with mashed potatoes and stewed tomatoes.  I'm gagging as I type.  8-P

I'm pretty sure Haluski is popular in some restaurants for Lent season in Pittsburgh.  Yum!

The only way she could make that meal worse was to serve it with either peas or lima beans.  8-P

I don't mind frozen peas (and actually love them if I have mashed potatoes and gravy to put peas on top of ; or creamed peas); but limas and even worse butter beans HORRIBLE 8-P

Fronzen peas are good but my mom used canned peas.  8-P

We also ate a lot of pizza, Fridays seemed to be a pizza day year round.

My father was Catholic and old school, too.  Even when they changed it it didn't happen at home.
