Subject: Frozen Foods:

Written By: Badfinger-fan on 08/15/10 at 12:31 am

I've been eating frozen foods since the 60's. it all started with tv dinners made by Swanson or Banquet. I can't remember the last time I had one of those. and who hasn't enjoyed one of those little turkey pot pies?  ::)  Lady Di always has Jimmy Dean breakfast sandwiches in our freezer, either sausge and egg or bacon & egg. I prefer the sausage ones. tonight I took a chance on a frozen pizza and it was actually very tasty. it was a DiGiorno pepperoni with rising crust.
so which ones do you like?

I tend to shop for microwave gourmet in the natural foods section of the supermarket.  They're not as full of weird stuff as Stouffer's and so forth.  Refrain from Hot Pockets.

That's right.  I forbade a friend of mine admittance to my car because he was eating a Hot Pocket.

He could have the ride or he could have the Hot Pocket!

He chose the Hot Pocket!

Frozen food - I grew up on frozen foods...  Cheap Jeno's or Totino's pizza's, I still like tombstone frozen pizza.  Banquet pot pies, I am not soo fond of those anymore (but I do allow my girls to have them - they get satisfaction of "making their own dinner") and Banquet tv dinners (my girls LOVE salisbury steak - and again they like to think they are helping me out and Making their own dinner), my mom was a total fan of convenience food!

I myself have grown out of the above, but I love the SCHWAN man, and his frozen goodies.  We get his vegetables and fruit, and we love his chicken strips, chicken bites, fajita meat, philly beef steak meat, pork chops, and frozen wings, and their flat bread sandwhiches (chicken, bacon, ranch) are a must in my freezer.  I cannot seem to enjoy their frozen dinners though - just not what I like, and I can normally make the real thing cheaper and with just as easy a convenience.

As for at the freezer section of the grocery store - Stouffers Lean Cuisine's are awesome - there are some really good ones out their.  The Panini's are particularly good.  Along with Weight Watchers Smart One's dinners - I love a good sale on these!

My mother never fixed T.V. dinners until my sister and I begged/bugged her.  I don't remember much about the meal but I seem to recall some nasty hot pudding with a think skin on it.  8-P

I'm really not into microwaveable frozen meals.  It more of a texture thing than a flavor thing.

I'm O.K. with things that I can bake, like frozen pizzas, lasagna, fried chicken, etc..

Totino's pizza rolls are one of my guilty pleasures.

I also really like the Green Giant bags of broccoli, cauliflower & carrots with cheddar cheese sauce... and I buy corn on the cob frozen all the time.

I like some of the Birds Eye meals too.  I buy those Tina's burritos sometimes, they aren't the greatest but for 50 cents they're pretty good for lunch at work.

Well, for a while I loved eating frozen breakfast foods...waffles, French toast, and pancakes, from brands like Eggo and Krusteaz (which I think is pronounced like the name of a clown character on the Simpsons). I usually cook those in the microwave.

As for non-breakfast meals, I enjoy the Healthy Choice microwaveable entrees; I have been eating those since the late 90's. Then there are the frozen pizzas, which I heat in the oven. I've tried several brands of those, with a few favorites.

I also think I might've eaten a chicken pot pie that was originally frozen, but I don't remember what brand it was.

I've been intrigued by something called "Monkey Bread" that i see in the frozen food aisle.  Never tried it.  It looks like a huge cinnamon roll that can be sliced up and served.

Monkey Bread is awesome!  But you can make it on your own - look for a recipe on Allrecipes or food.com.  You just cut up little bits of ref. biscuit dough (like Pillsburry poppin fresh - in the can) and roll it into balls in cinnamon sugar.  Pour a butter sugar sauce over it all and bake.

Does anyone remember THESE?

http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x2y9a0_libbyland-dinners-libby-the-kid_shortfilms

My mother used to get them for me.

As I got older, I used eat the Lean Cuisine A LOT. In fact, there was time when the weight poured off of me because that is what I ate-nothing but the Lean Cuisine.

When I lived alone, I ate a lot of frozen foods (stuff that I can microwave). I also used to eat Steak 'Ums, fried chicken (it was easy just to take one or two pieces out at a time).  I also used to eat Hot Pockets & such. It is really hard to cook for one.

Now, I live with a cheapo very frugal person who does the shopping. He will buy me the cheapo microwavable lunches IF they are on sale. He will NOT get Lean Cuisine because they are too expensive.

lol how did you find a husband that does grocery shopping?  I want one of those!!  :D

I got REALLY lucky. He also cooks.  :o :o :o  The chef has to shop for his ingredients. Unfortunately, if there is something that I really want, I usually have to go to the store myself to buy it because there have been many times that he TRIES to get what I want but only to come home with the wrong stuff.  :-\\  But, he does try.

Tater Tots was a hot lunch constant when I was in school.  You'd get 'em next to the main tray compartment, which was for American Chop Suey (or American Slop Chewy) or something called "cutlet."

That sent me Monty Python reminiscing.  This time it's the Whizzo Assortment chocolate box sketch:

Inspector Praline: Next we have number four, 'crunchy frog'.
Mr. Milton: Ah, yes.
Praline: Am I right in thinking there's a real frog in here?
Milton: Yes. A little one.
Praline: What sort of frog?
Milton: A dead frog.
Praline: Is it cooked?
Milton: No.
Praline: What, a raw frog?
(Superintendent Parrot looks increasingly queasy.)
Milton: We use only the finest baby frogs, dew picked and flown from Iraq, cleansed in finest quality spring water, lightly killed, and then sealed in a succulent Swiss quintuple smooth treble cream milk chocolate envelope and lovingly frosted with glucose.
Praline: That's as may be, it's still a frog.
Milton: What else?
Praline: Well don't you even take the bones out?
Milton: If we took the bones out it wouldn't be crunchy would it?

I agree.  If it has calamari on it, it's not pizza.  If it's vegan, it's not pizza.  Nothing against calamari -- or vegans -- but pizza is supposed to be cheesy, gooey, greasy, and fun -- not health food or haute cuisine!

As I always say, meat has to come from an animal.  That means killing, skinning, and gutting it.  If want to sell it as fresh but you can't get it to market immediately, rapid freeze is quite necessary.  If there is anything about this you don't like, I suggestion you go vegetarian.

I made this new-ish frozen pasta dish from Red Baron (pizza people).  It was supposed to take 29 minutes in the oven, but was still cold in the middle, stuck it back in another 20 minutes...still cold.  I put the sucker on broil but was afraid of burning it after all that time so I just took it out and scooped it onto a plate and microwaved it to death.  It tasted pretty good, but I think I'll just make dried pasta in less time next time.

This is what puzzles me about my fellow suburban omnivores.  They got all upset about seeing those turkeys butchered behind Sarah Palin.  Granted, it was a lousy location for a press conference, and if I were Sarah, I wouldn't want to get too close to the turkey butcher!  Easy mistake.

Seriously, though, you like turkey on Thanksgiving?  Well, the bird has to get from the coop to your oven somehow.  If 50 million people want to buy a Thanksgiving turkey, then the farmers are going to have to butcher them day in and day out.  No way to make it look pretty.

Yeah, Stouffer's "microwave" French bread pizza.  Same thing.  I could make my OWN French bread pizza from scratch in less time -- including harvesting the wheat!

Would it taste as good as Stouffers?

Being from the Midwest as well as being a truck driver, I've been to plenty of meat-packing plants. And believe me, they aren't for the squeamish, I've experienced more than my fair share of disgusting sights and smells from those places, so that isn't anything I don't already know about.

I used to have to go to IBP and ConAgra plants, sometimes on 100 degree days, to have pig hides loaded into shipping containers that were eventually going to China to be tanned and made into leather. As you can imagine, the stench was quite horrible, but then I'd think about how those hides would fester for a couple months while they were being shipped across the ocean (even though they were caked in salt to preserve them), and I'd wonder about how awful it must have been for that poor bastard in China who had to open up that container after all that time.

Just as gross: The parking lots by the docks at those plants were so slick from being saturated with all that grease and animal fat that it was like walking on ice.

Indeed it was quite nasty but despite all that, I still have no problem with eating meat.

I have one of those up in freezer too (Stouffer's pizza), I'm not a big fan of pizza on frebch bread (too thick for my taste.) So I've kinda been avoiding making it.  Hubby bought it so I figured if he wanted it, he could make it for himself.  So far I think it's been in there a month, so it may be covered in glaciers by now.  ;D

I suppose it's like being in the undertaker business.  You either get used to it or quit!  I don't think I'd last a half hour in one of those rendering joints.  It's probably easier than you think for the Chinese guy.  He's had free will taken out of the equation for him!

But that kinda stuff can't happen here.  Wait, that's the other Sinclair.

But since neither of them are around, anyone else want a Hungry Man meal?  (Don't look at me.  Reading that brought back all kinds of retro memories about food.  You eat one of those every few months, and you'll suffer no ill effects.  And you'll appreciate the food you do cook, all the more.)

Kids these days.  Fancy plastic for their TV dinners, so it'll work in a microwave.  Those aren't TV dinners.

Those are TV dinners.

When I was a kid, TV dinners were packaged in aluminum, and you heated 'em with radiant heat, like, from that big oven, and they took 25 minutes at 425F.  They were marketed as convenient, becuase compared to the time it would have taken to clean, prep, and roast a turkey or a comparable slab of beef, 25 minutes from freezer-to-TV was fast. Uphill, both ways, lawn, off, git.

If there are any in your grandmother's freezer, go for it.  They're still good.

MRE (n): Meal, Ready to Eat; three lies for the price of one!

Actually, I've had the chance to sample MREs every few years.  They're actually a lot better these days than they used to be.  Given that you can take a few and stash them in your basement, the trunk of your car, your desk at work, under your bed, or damn near anywhere else for 5-10 years and still expect them to be edible, MREs are one of the more clever things humanity has invented.  MREs are like bottled water, but they actually contain flavor and nutrients!

When the {Earthquake|Flood|Hurricane|WW3|Revolution|Zombiepocalypse} happens, the frozen food gets eaten as it thaws, the canned food gets eaten next, and the MREs either get eaten last, or go in the backpack for the long walk down The Road.  In the event of flood or WW3, the cans will be contaminated with crud or lost in the mud, but the MREs, safely ensconced in their big plastic air bubbles, willl be floating for comparatively easy retrieval, rinse-off, and safe consumption.

And that little packet of Tobasco?  Like gold and silver, and unlike lead, those little packets of tobasco also make lousy bullets, but in an age where only 20% of the population smokes, and after all the non-MRE food is consumed, I tell you this: those little Tobasco packets will be worth more than gold!

Well, if you eat the popsicle, and then take the stuff that didn't freeze at 0 Celsius... you end up with a tactical nuclear penguin of a beer.  Do it repeatedly, and it'll be strong enough to sink the Bismark, and from there it's just one short step to the End of History.

Remember kids:  Freezing isn't distillation.  It's also not brewing, but we'll give these guys a pass on that :)

At what temperature does ethanol freeze solid?
???

I don't know if it's an urban legend or not but I've heard of people keeping distilled spirits in their deep freezes.  If the alcohol gets to 30 degrees centigrade it could react with your precious bodily fluids creating ice and plugging your air passage.  It's one of those things I've always heard but never knew anyone to whom it happened...and I know people who've done craaaazy sh*t with alcohol!

-114C, but it's not that simple.  Unlike crystallizing solids out of supersaturated solutions (e.g. cooling a hot saturated sugar solution to room temperature, at which it's supersaturated and will form crystals around anything suspended in it, giving you tasty sugar crystal candy!), there's always some alcohol in solution with the water in both the frozen and liquid components, but the proportion varies as a function of temperature and alcohol content.

At 30C it'd be 80F.  No problem!  At -30C, which is probably what you meant, any liquid would be painful to drink, and you probably could get frostbite on the tongue or esophagus if you weren't careful.  There are better ways to get drunk, like... just acquiring a 40% ethanol solution (preferably one obtained by distillation and long-term storage in oak barrels) and consuming at at room temperature.  At -114C, a 200-proof alcopop would be hazardous to the tongue.  But so would anything else - that's colder than dry ice (frozen carbon dioxide) at -78.5C.  We're talking "surface of mars" termperatures.

With the possible exception of Jaegermeister, which is served this way by tradition, I can't imagine why one would drink a distilled spirit at sub-zero temperatures.  The point of whisky and other distilled spirits is the flavor, and the flavor is conveyed by the aroma.  Chilling such a beverage would keep all those volatile compounds from evaporating; it'd be a waste of good booze.  (One notable exception: vodka, which isn't supposed to have flavor, can be, and often is, served from the freezer.)

But drinking 200-proof alcohol at room temperature wouldn't be pleasant either.  (The reason Everclear isn't 200 proof is because pure ethanol is so hygroscopic that it absorbs water from the atmosphere.  Unless you want to get fancy with vaccum systems, 190 is the limit imposed by chemistry.  And it still isn't pleasant to drink - it's essentially flavorless except for the pain of the cells of your mouth being forcibly dehydrated.)

The whole over-20% ABV beer thing that was the fad earlier this year was just an application of fractional freezing, which has been done by the Germans for centuries, but only done in a funny way by Brewdog.

I haven't yet tried those restaurant brand appetizers in the frozen section, somehow I don't think they'll be as good as getting it at the restaurant (although likely that is what they use too...the frozen stuff microwaved)

Can't find the picture I need...

I tried these, they're pretty good but they don't keep you as full unless you have a cup of coffee to go along with it.

They are breaded green beans, pop them in the oven... Never thought I would like them, let alone the girls (mysteriously a bag ended up in our freezer- dyam Schwan man) and we finally tried them.  ALL of us think they our da Bomb, girls ask for them often.  So O0 from me.

I always ate that first.  Damn...that's the best part!  Unless it had gravy or peas in it, which half the time it did.

I haven't had a Swanson's tv dinner in 25 years I bet.  I eat Lean Cuisine all the time, but those bastards don't give you a brownie.

I don't like frozen meals and neither do my kids, hubby likes some of the Healty Choice meals.

French fries, mozzarella sticks and pizza rolls are popular in my house.
My kids like those cheap frozen pizzas, usually I'll add some extra cheese to them.  My son loves chicken fries.

I like the frozen pancakes but I don't buy them anymore, I just make my own and freeze them (it's cheaper  ::)).

No worries Howard.  Max is just talking about the book "Catcher in the Rye."  There is a character in the book named Ackley who will eat even the grossest foods, and so Max was saying that only Ackley would eat the dessert in a TV dinner.

Just bought some Klondikes at the store.  Haven't had one in years.  Couldn't resist.  I had no idea that there were so many different varities and flavors now.

Our freezer is going nuts, the thermometer in there says it's 20 degrees below 0 Farenheit in there (I don't quite believe THAT but it IS awfully cold.)  Frost everywhere.  The Klondike I had tonight was so hard it nearly broke my teeth, but it DID last a long time.  Oddly enough (like everything) they just don't taste as awesome as I remember them tasting.  :-\\
