Subject: KFC's New Double Down

Written By: LyricBoy on 04/13/10 at 8:55 am

Anybody try the new "Double Down" sandwich at KFC? ???  It is packed with so much bacon, cheese, and grease that there is no room for a conventional bun.  Instead, the "bun" is two nice pieces of fried chicken that hold in all that death.  ;)

I swear, a restaurant could start wrapping dog turds in bacon and people would gobble 'em down!  ;D ;D

Settle down, HowHard.  This is just a bastardized fast food version of Chicken Cordon Bleu, so I highly doubt you'll be seeing burgers without buns (which already exist....it's a low carb option) and pizza without crust (the crust is an integral part of pizza).

Would I eat this?  Hell yes.  Then again, I've been on a liquid diet for almost two weeks so even SPAM is looking good at this point.

I will co-sign on this.  Bacon is like the food of the gods.  Before I started the liquid diet from hell, we had friends over for dinner.  On a lark, we copped a recipe from the "This Is Why You're Fat" website and made bourbon bacon pecan pie.  It was fracking delicious.

Viva la piggy....or not, if we're going to make bacon out of him.

Howard, do you need a bun to eat a piece of fried chicken?  The chicken melts and it's gooey deliciousness holds the almighty bacon in place between the two pieces of chicken.

Not that I'll be trying this anytime soon thanks to the stupid diet I have to go on that consists basically of fruits, veggies, and grains >:(

This is just a bastardized fast food version of Chicken Cordon Bleu

Thank you.

It looks like it's a lot more calories than it is.  At 550 calories, the KFC double down is within striking distance of McDonald's Big Mac (540), and well under Burger King's Double Whopper with Cheese (~1000).

Dirty Fast Food Secret:  When you fry lean food (like a chicken breast) in oil, not much of the oil actually stays with the batter.  And when you cook bacon, a lot of the fat in the bacon is rendered out during the cooking process.  When you take something relatively healthy like even a fatty 80/20 burger, but then slather it with mayonnaise-baised "special sauce", however, you're adding tons of calories.

It's not how much you eat at any one serving, it's how much you eat every 24 hours, that matters.  Double Down?  Bring it on.  Just remember to hold the sauce, hold the fries, hold the soda, and/or hold the beer.  (Or have the fries and beer, but skip lunch.)

Jess,

Are those lap bands adjustable?

Yup.  The band goes around your stomach, then you have some tubing running from the band to something called a "port", which is attached near the top of your skin (but you can't see it).  The doctors can then inject saline into the port, which will inflate the band if you're not getting enough restriction from it.  They can also deflate it if you have too much restriction.  I just chose to do it because it seemed a lot less drastic than getting my stomach stapled, cut off, or rerouted. :D

Well in that case, no problem at all.  Simply deflate that sucker to allow you to scarf down a KFC Double Down, and then return it to its previous setting afterwards.  ;D

As an aside, I like the idea of the lap band better than the permanence of a bypass/staple/cutoff, too.

No, that thing in your picture is a Double Down nestled between two halves of one glazed Krispy Kreme donut.  It's a Luther lite.

And it looks awesome.  Awesomely wrong, but awesome nonetheless.  (I've Lutherized a burger from time to time, and now I think I know what I'm gonna do with my Double Down when I get around to eating one: Half gets eaten straight-up as an experiment, and the other half gets Lutherized.)

Seems like the biggest complaint in the foodie-blogosphere about the Double Down is that the flavor of the breading/chicken overpowers the bacon and the cheese.  If so, adding s'more sweetness to the mix via a donut might balance the saltiness of the chicken.  Or for the health-semiconscious, maybe a sprinkle of Romano or some other seriously-pungent cheese on it, or of course, there's always the option of another slice of bacon...

Someone totally needs to stuff that thing inside a turkey and deep-fry the whole thing.

That would be the best food ever.  :D

So I went ahead and tried a Double Down today. Purely in the interest of science, of course.  ;)

The first thing that struck me was that it was a lot smaller than I had expected. And to be honest it wasn't really that good, although that mainly had to do with the preparation of my sandwich as opposed to its actual concept. The chicken patties they used on mine had been sitting under a heat lamp all day and they were so tough and dry that any danger I might have had of sudden cardiac arrest would have been due more to overexertion from trying to chew through the damn thing rather than its actual nutritional content.

Had it been fresh and juicy (or had I opted for the grilled version) it probably would have been pretty good, although not good enough to where I'd eat one or two a week. Besides, whenever I get the occasional fried chicken jones I'd much rather go to Popeye's or Church's than KFC.

You ever been down South? They deep-fry EVERYTHING down there.

I once went to this place in Arkansas called the Dixie Cafe and they had deep-fried corn-on-the-cob.

And it was pretty damn good.  :D

Ok, I don't know where I've been, but I only just learned what, exactly a double down was today.  I had heard the term, of course, but just didn't care enough to look and see what it was.  And you know what, I think it looks good.  I would try it.  I'm not going to make a special trip or anything, but you know, if the opportunity presents itself - hell yeah!

They do have a grilled Double Down. I tried it yesterday and it wasn't bad. Maybe a little messy but tasty. But I probably should have taken the bacon off before eating it.
