Subject: Now I understand why the GIs in WWII hated Spam so much.
Written By: AL-B Mk. III on 12/06/08 at 2:10 am
When I was back in Nebraska visiting my family for Thanksgiving, my mom showed me this coffee table book about the history of Spam. It was rather humorous and tongue-in-cheek, and I realized that I hadn't had Spam in a long time. So when I got back to KC and did my weekly grocery shopping, I decided to pick up a couple cans just to give it a try.
So tonight I opened up a can and cut it up and threw it in the frying pan. Now, perhaps I didn't cook it properly but it was NASTY. I can eat just about anything but I couldn't finish it. As a matter-of-fact, I just about hurled.
The book mentioned how the US troops in World War II got pissed off because they kept repeatedly getting Spam in their rations and how that's all their cooks had to work with for months on end. Just having it once almost made me gag. I can understand why the GIs got tempted to shoot their cooks after having to eat that gross crap day after day after day. :P :P :P

to this day, I have never tried Spam. both my wife and daughter love it, especially my daughter. my wife digs the canned corned beef hash, another thing I've never eaten. Spam and steamed rice is a Hawaiian dish I think and I guess that I'd eat that. however.. I have eaten potted meat which looks pretty nastified ::) but that was a long time ago

Spam Yuk!! When I was a kid my mother used to try to give it to us for lunch, for me to eat it she had to fry it black and pour maple syrup on it. The stuff is disgusting on.

Thanks for posting that Alan. It proves to me what I'd always thought. The first two items the waitress suggests don't have any spam but no one seems to remember that later on. :-\\
I don't mind eating sliced spam in sandwiches or as an emergency meat side in a salad. My mum used to batter slices and fry them which was tolerable but not a 'first choice' dish.

I LOVE corned beef hash, especially mixed with scrambled eggs.
Not big on Spam though, but I will give a thumbs up to the turkey Spam. It's a decent breakfast meat.

Ah yes, the Spam skit. I'm working on the waitress shrill. Terry Jones can get a higher pitch than me though.
I've eaten Spam. It's not my favorite but if it's put in front of me then I will.

As you're frying it, you need to dump cheese in the pan, have it with beans too.

I love corned beef hash out of the can - with eggs over easy... ;D
NOT A SPAM (or potted meat, or vienna sausages) fan :P
Hawaii has several dishes with Spam - they are probably the reason SPAM is still made today..Residents of Hawaii consume more Spam than populations anywhere else in the world: More than four million cans every year, or an average twelve cans of Spam per person per year. :P :P :P

While I don't hate SPAM, I can see how others won't like it, especially since it's really salty(while I don't hate salty flavors, they aren't high on my list in general).

I tried Spam once as a kid and absolutely hated it. My dad LOVED it, though.

Now I know where the word "spam" got its origin!
Anyway, in regards to spam, I think my mother gave me a spam sandwich once when I was 7 'cause I remember trying to eat something with jelly-like pink meat and I thought it was really gross.
