Subject: PIZZA!
Written By: Badfinger-fan on 11/02/08 at 8:45 pm
what's your favorite toppings, and where do you get it? one thing good about pizza is that meat lovers and vegi lovers can enjoy a good pizza pie.
our primary Pizza source here is Round Table. It's pretty consistent. the crust is good, and the meat toppings are tasty and the cheese is nice and melty & gooey when it arrives at your table. my choice is Montague's All Meat Marvel, with sausge, pepperoni, salami, linguicia, but the girls usually like to get mushrooms and olives and only 1 meat on theirs.
a bit more upscale here is Zachary's pizza and they specialize in deep dish. it's really really good 8)
one more choice of ours on poker nights is Papa Murphys, it's a take and bake. much less expensive because you have to cook it yourself, but it's pretty good too.

Oh gosh...I LOVE pizza...I could never get sick of it. My favorite pizza is from a local place called, Jioio's. They have a thin and sweet crust (similiar to a pie crust, but flakier) and their sauce is real sweet...it's heavenly!
I usually get mushrooms on my pizza...but sometimes I will also get black olives and mild pepper rings too.

as for vegi pizzas, mushrooms and black olives work for me, and I don't mind a small amount of onion as long as it's cooked well. not sure how I would react to a sweet sauce but if you say it's heavenly, it must be good

I wish you could too. I'm sure Lady Di and Jule's would totally dig it.
next Friday is our softball team pizza party at Round Table. whenever we win a league championship, our team manager treats us and our families to all we can eat pizza. he'll probably order 10-12 extra large pies which will be more than enough ::)

that sounds so fun and cozy! I loved hanging out at pizza parlors with family/friends when I was younger. We had this family friend who used to own a pizza place. We would spend either Friday or Saturday night there, hanging out, eating, listening to tunes on his jukebox...fun times!

no cheese? ??? a good thing about Domino's pizza is that it's inexpensive. so the double ham is good. gotta remember to try that but I gotta have cheese on my pizza.

it is a good time and the pizza always tastes extra good because of the Championship Victory and that it's free 8)
it's nice to know the owner because they usually give ya discounts. ::)

cheese makes me hurl.
Domino's is the only place where they don't laugh at me when I order this way so they get my repeat business for respecting my order.
my friends can laugh at me (and they frequently do....but I don't want some kid laughing & scoffing at me when I call in an order)

I can appreciate that. cheese isn't everyone's thing and that could be a bit embarrassing if a pizza joint laughed or questioned you not getting cheese, but I imagine they get those requests more that I am aware of.

I am one of the rare few who enjoy actual anchovies on my pizza (anchovy and onion is one of my favorites) - But I also love a small pizza joint called Franks and their special(their special homemade sausage - very crumbly, green peppers, mushrooms, and onions) Yummy, makes me want to go get one now

I never really liked cheese and hated scrambled eggs. I found out not too long ago that I couldn't digest dairy products any more. I seem to be okay with pizza as long as theres tomato sauce. I usually just have cheese pizza so I can taste the sauce. I use to like Pizza Hut, but we haven't had any in a long time. We just go up the street to Hungry Howie's. It's okay I guess, but it's pizza so I'm going to eat it anyway.

Oh God, I desperately miss Round Table (which is amusing since I live in CHICAGO, home of the stuffed pizza). I freakin' love their King Arthur's Supreme slathered in Ranch dressing. The Maui Zaui is also good. And I've got nothing but love for their artichoke pizza.
Our favorite in Chi-Town is Cholie's. It is a little dive situated next to a bar, just down the block and around the corner from our house. Their Cholie's stuffed special pizza is artery clogging goodness, and their thin crust (by the slice) is a cheap and delicious meal if you're hungry and don't want to make lunch. We discovered them when we were living in Indiana (they have a few places in Chicagoland...that includes the 'burbs in Northwest Indiana), and we haven't gone anywhere else since. Well, with the exception of taking Al-B and Satan's Dad to Giordano's, but I totally felt like I was betraying Cholie's. ;D

Almost every Friday adter Tim gets his check we stop at Salvatores. We get the special, one large pizza ( 16 slices) 10 wings( Sweet & sassy) and a 2 liter of pop. Normally we just get the pizza half pepperoni, half cheese, but if the kids aren't home I think I'll start getting some veggies on my half.

Hell that's true, I guess that's why so many people like it (and I've been on both sides, but I'm a vegetarian now).
As a kid and all the way up to my pre-vegetarian days (in 2001) I usually got it with cheese and pepperoni, and sometimes stuff like mushrooms, sausage and stuff like that. In the last several years, I pretty much have it the same way, just without any of the meat! I still never liked olives though, but I do like to mix it up a bit.
Out of the chains, I like Pizza Hut the most.
Overall, there was a place called Rico's Pizza which was in a suburb of Sacramento I lived in 1991-95 that was really close to our houses. In fact, to this day that's my alltime favorite place (last I checked it's still there too, lol). It just had a really laid back but cool atmoshere and they still had an arcade and a jukebox, so it still felt 80s!

Zachary's for the win. Closest thing you'll get to Chicago-style on the West Coast.
Papa Murphy's for a close second. It's a solid "everday" kind of pizza, but the beauty of the take-and-bake approach is that you can customize it at home. Fresh garlic and a little extra cheese usually finds its way onto mine, as well as whatever kind of cooked sausage I happen to have laying around. A plain cheese-only Papa Murphy's, plus fresh (think "floppy green leaves that you chop with a knife", not "stuff you shake out of a little bottle") basil, can be heaven on earth, even if you don't have an 800F pizza oven required to properly reproduce a Neapolitan style pizza.

right on Foo Bar when it comes to good tasty pizza, there's not much you can find wrong with Zachary's. my wife works in Berkeley and she turned me on to Zachary's deep dish pizza several years ago, but I prefer the regular style crust with sausage. There's one 2 blocks away from my work. I brought one home once and it must have weighed 5 lbs. and the pizza smell was still in my car the next morning. so wait, you bypass the Papa Murphy's cooking instructions and cook the pie at a hotter temp or just personalize it with your own ingredients.

It balances out, trust me. There's like a pound of cheese under all that sauce, along with whatever else you put in there. The usual for Chicago is green bell peppers, mushrooms, onions, and, if you like it, sausage. I know one place around here that makes a spinach and cheese stuffed pizza that is supposed to be really good.
Usually on deep dish/stuffed pies, the sauce is really light anyways, with a bit more chunks of tomato. It is not the heavy standard sauce that other pizzerias use.

I have two different places I get pizza from. ;D
I love LOVE pizza from Domino's and my fave toppings are pepperoni, onions, black olives, onions, sausage canadian bacon and onions. ;D
A also like the pizza from a place in our local mall called Roman Delight and they have a supreme stuffed pizza slice that's so good, it'll make you slap someone! ;) It's stuffed with all the trimmings and green bellpeppers. Yum-o!
Does anyone know of any pizza chains that put ANCHOVIES on thier pizzas. :) I've got a hankering for anchovies. LOL.

No thanks, think I'll pass...
Seeing those pictures made me realize that what we call "Big American Pizza's" over here would look ridiculously small in your eyes.
We don't have any pizza parlors around here. Well, not really... There's a joint called Miami Slice Pizza in our city center (never ate there), one or two Italian restaurants with a pizza delivery service, and that's about it. They've been trying for months (if not years) to start a Domino's Pizza here, but nobody's interested in starting a franchise...
Whenever I feel like eating a pizza, I buy one from the supermarket (one block away) and bake it in my oven.
I'm too lazy to add ingredients, btw. ;D

so wait, you bypass the Papa Murphy's cooking instructions and cook the pie at a hotter temp or just personalize it with your own ingredients.
Just personalize it.
The true Neapolitan style pizza is an extremely thin crust, and barely any ingredients. It's done on a pizza oven (preferably wood-fired) at temperatures far higher (700-800F) than can be reached in any home oven. The emphasis is on freshness of ingredients and crispness of crust, not quantity. Crust is crisp and blackened on the bottom, but soft beneath the toppings. Typical pizza size rarely exceeds 12" in diameter. A "slice" can be held by the crust end, and will not droop.
Unless I'm in a restaurant that does a good Italian-style pizza, I prefer the American-style pizzas, where the emphasis is on the toppings as much as it is on the crust. I respect and enjoy the New York Slice (large, moderately thin crust, droops when picked up, and the outer edge of the crust should be soft too), but on personal preference, I come down on the Chicago style (which New Yawkers would describe as "a casserole with a pan made out of bread") side of the debate.
The default Papa Murphy's recipe is neither New York nor Chicago style, but its default recipe (and funky heat-resistant one-time-use cardboard pan) does an amazing job for the home oven, where a pizza stone isn't always available. Throw on some fresh basil, and you end up with a cross between Neapolitan-style and New York Style. Very nice stuff, and for half what you'd pay in a restaurant.

LOL.
No I do not know of any "chains" to have anchovy pizza (I love them), so I will buy a Papa Murphy's pizza and add my own before I bake it.... Just an idea

I'm too lazy to add ingredients, btw. ;D
just a note Henk, these aren't the usual size pizza most of us eat here. we usually get a thinner once that doesn;t look like a round lasagna.
A "slice" can be held by the crust end, and will not droop.

the only thing I ever add is more cheese. I've seen food show specials on tv where they go to places that make the Neopolitan style and they look fantastic and I noticed that the cheese and toppings aren't as evenly distributed. they just kinda throw them on. the melted mozzarella looks fantastic on those pizzas http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2247/2378901750_3e4e395529.jpg?v=0 and here's a good visual of that slightly charred and blackened crust http://farm1.static.flickr.com/169/436857573_123c027875.jpg?v=0

This summer, I waited in line for over an hour to eat what is arguably the best pizza in New York - Grimaldi's Coal Brick Oven Pizza located under the Brooklyn Bridge. It was the best pizza I have ever had.
BTW, those pics of Zachary's Pizza look really good!

Believe me, I need no help in that department. :D
Anyway, pizza is one of my most favorite foods(ice cream ties with it in my top favs).
Due to my pickiness with food in general, I tend to favor meat toppings(minus anchovies) on pizza. The only vegetable topping I like on it is tomato(which is one of my top favorite vegetables).

Chicken, Green Peppers, Onions and Cheese.
There's this local spot called the Warehouse and it's quite delish! It's very East Coast in flavor considering I'm in CA. A little bit of home is what I call it.

we sure did go to the one on Crow Canyon. it was about 6pm, with a 20 min wait for a table, but it was cool because they let us order our pie as we were waiting so that once we got our table the pizza arrived about 10 min after we were seated.

Yeah, those pizzas take a good long 45 minutes to bake.
That one on Crow Canyon is a few streets away from my inlaw's house. I saw it when we went to visit them, and wanted to try it, but didn't get a chance to, because I remember you mentioning it before. :)

They make their pizzas square, and for some reason, they round off the ends so it's shaped like a race track. First I'd ever seen that at a place that serves square pizza

Giordano's rocks. Now I want to go to Chicago.
Although I prefer Chicago-style pizza, I'm tempted to try Grimaldi's coal brick-oven pizzeria, only because they have enough room in their restaurant for a rehearsal dinner (a flyer was put in my fiancé's bridal show goodie bag this weekend). Think my parents would prefer it be Chicago-style. I still want to try it. :D

You live near the supposedly greatest pizza place on earth, Pizzeria Bianco. If you ever try it, let me know, cause the Noo Yawk squad on the Slice Pizza blog is always raving about this place, which is astonishing, considering how snobbish they are about New York pizza.

Meh, that's a 45-minute drive. Then again, everything is a 45-minute drive for me. :D It's downtown. I was downtown this weekend. Not too keen on it. That place is probably packed.
I do like Rosati's. I may have to see if the Chandler or Ahwatukee location is big enough for a rehearsal dinner.

Back home (Chicago area) my favorite is Lou Malnati's. We take it home on the plane!! I also love Uno's and Giordano's. And Home Run. Another great one is called Vic's, in Springfield, IL.
Here in Florida, we have a few Uno's locations, but I was explaining to some people at work a few months ago about Giordano's and I found out that I have one about a mile from work! We order from there occasionally and they deliver to us. There's a great local place we like to go to when we go to the beach called Demitrio's and it is out of this world.
In Connecticut when we visit my sister-in-law, we go to Luna Pizza in Hartford. It's exceptional for Greek pizza or other exotic styles. It's better than the famous Mystic Pizza, in Mystic. We had gone to that one on several occasions, mainly because of the movie, and the first couple of times were amazing, but then it became kind of hit and miss, so we stick to Luna when we go there now.

Lou Malnati's will deliver a pie, FedEx, to anywhere in the continental US. If you're a fan of Chicago-style, and you live in an area where Chicago-style cannot be had (if you're in the SF Bay Area, you must get thee to Zachary's!), shipping a Malnati's pie is worth doing at least once, just for the experience.
My introduction to Chicago-style pizza came on a business trip to Chicago. Company hadn't sprung for a rental car because the conference was in the same building as the hotel. This is before the age when everyone had a wireless phone, and before the age when Google maps existed. We're talking the age of Mapquest, people, and you couldn't even fantasize about having internet access in your hotel room.
I'd heard about Lou Malnati's by word-of-mouth, and I'd enjoyed "deep dish" pizza, so why not see what all the fuss about "Chicago style" is about. When in Rome... besides, it's hard to go wrong by eating local, and the hotel guide says there's a Malnati's only a few blocks' walk from the hotel. And since I was planning on going out for a walk anyways, why not combine it with dinner? With that in mind, I sketched out the map from the hotel guide, and set out on my quest.
Around 45 minutes later, it was painfully obvious that the guide's map was not drawn to scale. But it's also pretty clear that I wasn't actually lost, and that I was probably a lot closer to Lou Malnati's than I was to the hotel if I were to turn around and walk home. Might as well keep going. Hey, there'll be a pay phone there, and I'll be able to call a cab after dinner.
An hour later, I'm there, and I immediately proceed to eat the best pizza I've ever eaten in my life. As hungry as I was, for the first time in my life, I was unable to finish a "medium" pizza in one sitting. I've had some fantastic New York style pizzas since then, but that day marked my conversion to the Chicago way.
So that's my story. I walked the better part of five miles to eat at Lou Malnati's. And it was worth it.

Normally I like a thin crust with as little cheese as possible (preferably none like Snozberries). Toppings... pepperoni, mushrooms and jalapenos!
